Hey Trogly, check out the video Ain't that peculiar live 1972 by the female group Fanny . Their guitarist June Millican is playing a double cut tv yellow LP Junior that happens to have a crown on the headstock. Maybe you could shed some light on that. I myself am guessing it's a replacement neck and Gibson just happened to use an SG Junior neck. Or did they make some intentionally like that?

I'm proud to know just how this axe could sound & play. That gold top profile pic is my non-weight-relief 2018 Gold Top Classic w/ P90's & Bigsby Vibramate. I underestimated P90's for years...MISTAKE! Gibson should do every Les Paul with 2 pick up options-humbuckers & P90s. Don't think I'd get humbuckers again.

I had one back in '69. Was my best guitar. Had a SG Junior, about a 63. That was a screamer! Had a mid 60's Guild Starfire III, and a mid 60's Strat -- black with maple neck. Also had one of the first 300 Dan Armstrong Clear Bodies. They all plugged into my Ampeg V4 full stack, with a VT22, with EV SRO's, and a V4 412 cab under it as a double stack. Practice amp was a 60's Ampeg Reverb Jet - with a Utah speaker. Want them all back!!!

I have an original 68 with the crown inlay. It had a repaired headstock that was very well done but still visible. The previous owner wanted a humbucker in the bridge so he proceeded to take a chisel and carve out a larger cavity (YIKES).I did a rough repair and restored it to a P-90.Despite all that,it plays great and ,excuse my saying so,has an old guitar smell that is sweet.,The best part about the guitar is that I only paid $800.00 can. Now that's a deal.

This Gold Top 68 Reissue replicates the actual 68 Crown inlay Reissue of the 56 Les Paul Gold Top that sported the Tailpiece and Bridge for the First time , Whether a mistake was made with the Crown inlay or it was due to Les Paul himself not contracted with Gibson at this time it makes the Goldie look Special . I have two Japanese C S L Les Paul Copies that sport the Crown inlays in Brown Sunburst so it's kind of Funny that Gibson started to use this " Mistake " inlay on Les Pauls a few years back ! 😎 🎩

I don't think that it was a typo. It's just that when they started making the Les Paul again, in 68, they just used the headstock that they were already making, the SG headstock. What happened afterwards is that the people were complaining about the headstock, saying that they wanted the Les Paul as they knew it, with the "Les Paul" script on it. So they changed the specification of the guitar to the original code. If it would've been a typo, it should be noticied and changed right away, not after 6 months

This was my first Gibson, with the silkscreened headstock, bought used for $200 (maybe $225) in '76. It was a long time ago but I'm fairly certain the P90 plastic covers had the Gibson logo molded in. Traded it for a cherry burst Custom because, well, I just had to have humbuckers!

    Its going to play easier.

I had an original '68 with the crown inlay. The guitar is actually documented on the '68 Les Paul website. Damn heavy guitar it was. The top strap button was in a slightly different location too from the later models. Someone before me had stripped the top to reveal a beautiful blister maple two piece top. Some work had been done in the pickup cavities too. I assumed a previous owner had been tempted to put humbuckers in but had got cold feet and returned it to P90s. It was missing it's original pickups when I got it. Had some 70's model's in there so I pulled them and stuck in a pair of 50's P90s. Sold it to a guy from Germany around 1992. Wonder where it is now? Ahh the memories...

  • @taylormade410

Yes, in 1967-68 I always envisioned the Gold Top Reissue having the crown inlay (change for the sake of change) but you were spot on with it as it was a wrong part number at the Gibson Factory. Moving forward to the year 2000 Guitar Center had Gibson make Les Paul standard (limited) in Cherry and Honey finish. These guitars had a crown inlay on a bound small head stock and ebony fret boards, burst bucker pickups and button Kluson Tuners (the Les Paul I always wanted - I bought the cherry finish). This guitar is too cool to describe and plays just as great as it looks. So, all of this started way back in the late 60's when I saw a picture of the original 68 Les Paul Standard with crown inlay. I still have the guitar today and would love to send you pictures.

I've always wondered about Neil Young's Old Black. It has the crown headstock but (and it's been a while since I read about it) he claims it was a 50's LP. The only way that could be is if it had been re-necked.

Jason Allen Old Black was renecked in 1968, hence the crown inlay.

I believe the reason they stopped calling the SG "Les Paul" was because Mr. Polfus raised a huge stink. He hated that new guitar. He didn't want his name anywhere near that devil design.

Is this perhaps the same as Neil young’s guitar? He has a crown on his headstock. I read somewhere that people speculated it had been re-necked also his started out as a gold top and was then painted black...

That's a lovely guitar. But hey they didn't really use hot hide glue to stick the tops on in the 50's. They used phenol formaldehyde.

Sorry, the biggest blunder was the Les Paul designed bridge/tailpeice incorrectly executed at the factory; not the crown.
