    The sparkle top deluxe is the rarest and most sought after Gibson Les Paul Deluxe of the 70s. There were approximately 125 Rocket Red Sparkle Tops made in 1975 (1 Left Handed) and 231 Blue sparkles from 1975-1977. There were also a very few made in Gold and Green Sparkle finish.
    These are historically significant guitars because custom color finishes didn't really exist with Les Pauls when these were made.
    These are incredibly tough to find in all original, clean shape without a headstock repair. Even repaired examples will fetch high values! However, the sky is the limit when a clean, unrepared one shows up for sale to the public.
    Guitar Center's Vice President Michale Doyle recently worked with Gibson to reissue these guitars since a Rocket Red Deluxe was his first proper les paul.
    A sparkle top deluxe is a MUST HAVE for any serious Les Paul Collection

    When I was a kid 20yrs old maybe I was taking lessons from a local music store, Linda's Music I think it was, the tutor brought one of these out for me to play as well as a Strat with a maple neck.
    He asked my opinion and I preferred the Strat. He gave me a weird look I think I was supposed to pick the Les Paul but it was neck heavy I thought. Now that I'm an old bastard and have had heaps of guitars over the years I'd pick the Les Paul and have a Goldtop. Man these takes me back almost fifty years.

    My brother had a 70's Deluxe gold top, and it was LEFT HANDED. He stripped the finish off it years before, and then he sold it to build an addition on to his house. I dragged my feet on trying to sell it for months, hoping he'd change his mind. He didn't. He brought it to a shop in Bridgeport, CT and he got $650 for it. Here's the kicker, the addition to his house was going to cost him ten grand. What was the point? WHAT WAS THE POINT???? He denies it to this day, but I have the sneaking suspicion that the wife put him up to it.

    What an awesome guitar Austin.
    Back in 1976 I traded in my then new Fender Mustang towards a 1974-1976 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe.
    That was one of the best playing guitars I've ever owned. Sold it in 1979 to purchase an Ibanez Artist, Ugh, wish I still had both guitars. My LP Deluxe was a Cherry Sunburst, and still to this day a day doesn't go by that I miss that guitar.
    I still have the original Gibson Warranty Card, S/N 398812. If anyone out there ever comes across that guitar please contact me directly.

My worst is selling a vox 12 string fo drugs but, that's not even close to that,and that thing needed a lot of work and wouldn't stay in tune. And for an Ibanez?? Yeah, i kick myself for the choices i made cause of drugs and bad decisions, but that one is just plain dumb! ;(

    This has always been my dream axe too. At one point I was up to 14 LPDLX's ! ...but no sparkles. You are right about the hunt for a proper sparkle - nearly impossible.
    So did you throw down with a doubleshot of BOC because Buck Dharma played a tobacco burst LPDLX with goof rings?! ..I have been trying to buy that DLX off him for years now...he won't let go...its a beautiful really dark T-Burst with such a great backstory - the reaper was written and recorded with that gtr...that insistent open G in that song is SO distinctly a LPDLX tonal quality - the loud snarling open G of the mini hums. Really enjoyed this episode, Robert Baker gave you a nice (mispronounced) shout out on his channel today.

    Great video, very informative. Not a stone left unturned! I confess I learned a few new things myself - you see, I own a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Blue Sparkle, so I am one of those people who has touched the glam grail ....seriously though, I bought mine in 1985 in London, and it cost me a whopping £800 at the time. In today's money this would be approx £2400 (or $3000). Arguably I overpaid, but I was young and naive! It has all original parts, case, and has suffered no headstock breaks. So, it's on a par with yours - if not better. Like you I had yearned after this unique special finish and saw (perhaps) a long-term investment opportunity. In 1985 my sister and I had each received a small inheritance from a recently deceased relative (£800 each), and I had spent mine on the one thing I wanted - the Les Paul Blue Sparkle. Funny thing is my sister left her £800 in an interest earning post office account which, when they contacted her 30 years later (...she had forgotten about it) was worth something like £12,000!!! I confess I was very disappointed to learn that she had made about treble what I had (potentially) made, without even trying. I own other great guitars which I use. The Blue Sparkle I don't use at all, and never really did. If anyone wants to see what it looks like, go to my profile and look for the Palma Groove Project video "What You Need". It made a rare appearance there...

    I own a 76 deluxe cherry burst (gorgeous color) with a lot of wear but no breaks. Bought it in 1980 and it was my main gigging guitar for years. Unfortunately it has seen some alterations as everyone did back then, full size Bill Lawrence routed in the treble, mini Bill Lawrence in the bridge, with a coil split. Professionally done before I bought it, but I am sure it has been devalued. One of the best necks I have ever played, but man is that guitar heavy! At least 10 lbs. Use my strat much more for gigging now, but I do love that guitar.

    • @guitartech-uk
      @guitartech-uk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You're correct. That's the answer, I've seen it on many guitars, over oiled tuners, it can actually rot the wood if vegetable based oil is used

    • @dyamariv3628
      @dyamariv3628 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@guitartech-uk Yup! People spray lubricant in the Klusson Tuner holes and if it's a liquid lubricant and they soak the tuners it will leach onto the headstock and through the finish. I'm surprised Trogly did know this, I guess we are all learning every day..

    I was waiting for you to post this one! Beautiful guitar. I had enough money to buy my first Gibson Les Paul in 1986. My choice was an early 80's Black Beauty, with chrome hardware, for £525 or a 70's Blue Sparkle Deluxe for £575. Sadly, to my everlasting disappointment, I went for the BB. Unbelievably poor choice as a young, big hair Metaller. That said, I sold the BB years later, at a low point, for not much more than I paid for it. My only consolation is that I didn't have the Blue Sparkle to sell. Small comfort. This is still my dream guitar.

    I actually inherited what I believe to be this exact guitar model (it's either a 75 or a 76, the pots are serialized with 75, but it looks like it has the ABR 1 bridge). I went and dropped it off at an appraiser just a bit ago after watching this video. According to him, it's completely original, with the exception of the strap mounts. It's in nearly pristine condition, and it remained almost completely untouched for 30+ years.
    I'm genuinely curious what it's worth to a collector. It really is a stunning guitar with almost zero damage or wear. The white areas have yellowed a bit, there's just a tiny hint of rash on the back (but only noticeable with a bright light and getting very close), and there's just a < 1cm ding on the bottom edge. For most intents and purposes, it looks like it just rolled off the factory floor.

    19:57 Fun Fact: B.O.C.'s "Cities on flame" seamlessly melds into the middle of "Godzilla" to expand the song out for live performances. Did that for many years with my last band--fun stuff

    I played an Sg with mini humbuckers. It was a newer model from a few years ago but I loved it. I really don’t see why people freak out over mini humbuckers. It’s not like they sound bad

    I have a 75 deluxe and a couple mods to these as a player instrument are to change the bridge pickup to a p90 and put the correct taper pots in there so you get a usable volume roll off.

    I have the Epiphone 2000 reissue of this guitar. I was able to do to it things I'd never dare do on a Gibson like putting on nice locking tuners, new pickups, new nut, new switch and Tone Pros's bridge and stop bar. It plays like a dream and I never have to panic that I'm playing out on a $5000 guitar instead of this $700 guitar.

    I also love Trogly "But we can`t always have what we want" Life would be meaningless if you never aspired to something you cannot have. "I see, I Love" "I Have, I Own" Get my drift. Loving from a distance sometimes means more than owning close as an object. Just my view. xx Col

      the mini humbucker must be the most underrated pickup ever, i think its because people dont like the look of it, i really dont but i have a 1980 les paul deluxe since ive had since 88, i wanted to change them out but i grew to love them, to be honest im hard pressed to hear the difference between them and the full humbucker, i just know they sound great fat and warm without sounding muddy

    Townshend used those mini-humbuckers on his numbered series of Les Pauls. That extra space, he used for "super distortion" pickup customizations.

    The red sparkle deluxe is actually one guitar I would really love to own. I’ve actually thought if I come across a p90 that’s been sanded/refinished or has a issue with the finish I might do a red sparkle tribute. I’m actually working on a Strat refinish now in red sparkle, I like the finish a lot. My main guitar also is a converted Deluxe (p90s converted to minis), I really like mini humbuckers.
