Hello. I built this guitar when I worked for Gibson in the 80's. According to my personal ledger, it was built on July 25th, 1983. Also, I can assure you that just because it has the 9 0001 serial number, it was not the first one made. There were many, many made before this one. I have the records to prove it. I'd love to discuss the facts with you sometime. P.S. - The FL initials belong to my Dad, Floyd Leonard, who was not the builder, but the Sound Booth Inspector. I was the builder. - Randy Leonard
Insightful comment. It would be great to hear you give an overview of this guitar in a TH-cam vid and point out more facts on it. I'm sure Trogly would allow you to use an excerpt of this vid and you can voice over your knowledge of this build. It's a great looking guitar.
This is by far the most awesome guitar I've ever seen on your show! That top is so deep and 3 dimensional, I could just dive in and swim. If I had the money I WOULD be the only one rocking it!
@@adiohead true... I would have kept it too... but he is super choosy about which ones he keeps so he can keep selling them to buy more guitars for review...
It looks lite! I always picked the heaviest Gibsons, I used to think that heavy equaled tone. Man I let one get away, a "98 standard in a brown sunburst, it was beat up had a brown back, best Gibson Ive ever played.
This is what I was referring to when I posted on a previous review regarding the top and finishing. The top is a beautiful example of a higher grade of wood. Something you’d expect to see on a guitar of that caliber. But the sound of those pick-ups are just incredible. That’s the sound I think of when I think Les Paul. Also, I’m glad you explained the serial number. Something I may not have considered as an original. But wow, this one definitely has a that tone. Once again, a wonderful find and example of some of the many different runs made by Gibson. That was a very in-depth review. More of a dissection I’d say. Kind of a guitar autopsy. Great work. Thanks!
My cousin and I were guitar store browsing in Houston back in the early 80's and there were two Guitar Trader Les Paul flametops in a glass case in the store, consecutive serial numbers. They had the baddest and widest flame figuring in the tops I have ever seen in my life. To this day I have never seen seen better looking tops, ever. Ace Frehley's flame top that was sold a few years ago was close.
As a starving college student in Chicago in the early '80s I was a subscriber to Guitar Trader's "Vintage Guitar Bulletin" from Red Bank, N.J. which I think was mailed every other month. I followed with rabid interest all the steps leading up to the production of those Guitar Trader Les Pauls -- the introduction of the idea, the section of the tops, etc. I remember the price, $5K, which seemed to me like a monstrous sum. But wow. Cool that you saw them in person.
Lovely top. Somehow Gibson selects the tips that have that multi dimensional flame that goes from ordinary to complex depending on the angle you look at it. Simply awesome
This is pretty much "the" Les Paul that people love and want. Has that amazing top, and powerful, great sounding pickups. I don't think I'd get a Les Paul since they weigh to much for me personally and I prefer the SG but I do like this LP. Great pick with this one Trogly.
That 1st "Standard 82" you showed, man! If you're asking if I'd rock that? Oh Hel's Yeah!!!! I've never seen a more fantastic flame-job on ANY guitar!!
You just brought me to 1981 in my parents living room jamming out on my plastic (probably toxic as hell) kiss guitar at 4 years old as my dad schooled me in blues and rock music. My fav Led Zep 2 never got old! The most important lessons of my life even more so than the ones he taught as I got older how to turn 100 different basic household items into instrument's of death to defend myself and my family when I grew up lol. True story! Obviously Im an 80s kid. Great videos bro, always learn something new here and never get bored with this channel! Rock on TGS!
Look who’s layin down the licks... It’s great when guitar inspires you. Some days they sound better than others especially if you’re in the mood to play.
this July i bought my first Gibson les paul standard in cherry burst and it has a great flame top and sounds incredible Nice Job Gibson and it wasn't marked up for the top so if anyone is looking for a les paul standard call the Gibson garage they were great they text me photos of 3 different ones and within a week the 1 i chose was at my front door.
I had a Standard 82 with a quilted top. From what I understand, they were all quilted. They were made at the Parsons Street Kalamzoo plant, some of the last guitars from that factory. The storey goes......that after the Heritage 80 series , the workers at the Kalamazoo plant wanted to show the Nashville workers how to build a proper '59 ( I imagine that some of these people in Kaalamazoo may have been the same as workers that built guitars , including LP's in 1959). Mine unfortunately had the "Gibson Smile" . Still, it was a piece of Gibson history.
You would love my 2001 58 reissue in lemonburst. That one has rounded point on the inlays like mine. Too cool! If you want to see pics, I would be happy to share some with you. It's one of 2 reissues that I bought within the last 4 months and feel very blessed to have been able to acquire.
Man that is my kind of guitar. No knock on collectors. Because face it. If it wasn’t for you collectors. All these guitars would be played into the abyss. BUT! It’s my opinion that no instrument should ever be cast away into the case. Only to be admired. They’re built to be played and play I would. This les Paul is right up my alley. Unfortunately I just don’t have the money. But one can dream though. Thanks for showing it. I love that it definitely looks like the peter Greene les Paul. Man you really got my wheels turning with this one trog.
This is why I have not even purchased my first car yet. I save up enough to buy a car but then I discover a beautiful work of art. A guitar like this. Then I end up buying the guitar instead of a car and it’s back to saving for a car again.
The finish on that guitar is called Honey Sunburst, and it has amber added to the normal clear coat. The switch knob is yellow, and the knobs have some yellow added to the normal gold knobs. There never was any red. The amber they used is basically the same as the burst color on the finish they called Harvest Gold that was an option for the Customs around 82-83. I've got a Standard 83 and a Harvest Gold Custom from 83.
That's the one! My favourite looking LP - the Paul Kossoff, Greeny/Moore, Ace Frehley 'Dirty Lemon Burst' '59. I would willingly give my left testicle to own one lol :)
You need to get Semichome polish to take out the finish swirls when cleaning older instruments. Research it, it is great stuff and easy to use. Can also polish the frets with it.
wow, you really couldnt ask for a better sounding pickup set as far as humbuckers go. these pickups sound clear as day and still have all of the bigness that you'd ever want
Tremendously nice looking & sounding guitar. The only cons are the neck pickup that's a little mushy to my taste, and mostly the weight: 10 pounds 9 ounces is a deal breaker for me !! Nice you succeeded to sell it for a fairly good price :)
I had a couple of those Music machine les paul custom shops the serial numbers started with MM they were some outstanding guitars you ever did anything on them
Happy Canada Day!....eh. As always, thanks for the info/history lesson. That guitar certainly has that "sound". It looked like you really enjoyed that ax...are you sure you want to sell it lol? Thanks for the video and have a great day!
unless its down to the Boogie (dont hear much overtones to suggest it is feeding back, though) this has perhaps the most sustain of any Paul I've heard (many many 100s), including original bursts. well, there goes the 'longer tenon = more sustain' idea
Is the color under the pickup rings or poker chip cherry red? Unless the pickups or selector switch were off for a long period for the color to fade the same as the rest of the guitar it should have retained the original color. Love your content and keep up the great work...Jimmy.
These never had any red. The finish is called Honey Sunburst. It was made to look like a faded burst. There is some amber in the clear coat ands the knobs.
People would put two switch covers on there guitar for identification purpose in case of theft or loss. But usually an initial was on the back of the top one.
Love this guitar, however I Will not pay the asking price, however I Will pay $2750, if a Trogly t-shirt and sleep pants set is thrown in. I could also use a few lessons. Thanks Trogly Love this show!

why do you have a personal ledger lol

Gotta say this IS one of the best sounding LPs.
This is literally in my mind the perfect LP. The finish, the back. The tone. Perfect to me.

I can’t believe your selling this one.
He got almost $8k for it...

He has like dozens of guitars... Probably seems too special to sell for us, but he has a business
My favorite LP you've had on your channel so far, love the shaw pickup's…i have the same in my 89 les paul studio with a vintage T-top pat #
That thing is a beast and my favorite LP you've had on your channel so far! That my friend would be a keeper in my book. Rock on! 😎👍🎸

Wish I'd seen this when it was for sale, rings for days, sounds better than my 2019 r8
You obviously love this one- keep it!

The first Knopfler, that is pretty cool. It looked and sounded good.
Im just a stupid drummer but I love to watch Trogly. Beautiful guitar.
Once again you grace us with another beauty. Looks good, sounds good, plays good. 👍
That is an incredible sounding piece of wood! Amazing 👌
Im not much of a Gibson man myself, and I dont like how these guitars play, but these guitars have so much craftsmanship in each and every example.
That 1st "Standard 82" you showed, man! If you're asking if I'd rock that?
Oh Hel's Yeah!!!! I've never seen a more fantastic flame-job on ANY guitar!!
Damn that sounds amazing! Killer song selection for the demo as well!
It reminds me of Slash's Appetite for Destruction guitar
How do you find such awesome guitars? How could you sell them??? Lol. That was one of the best sounding LPs I heard. It’s a monster!
Wow, I’ve always wanted a vintage guitar for tone...but never like I did that I’ve heard this one. Sounds amazing!

sold already, wow!
What about the 1971 Reissue of the 1954 Les Paul, that was called the 1958 reissue.
My rich neighbor collects Gibsons. My favorite of his 300 or so is his 1983 Les paul. Has mojo.
