Dov Elbaum is a Research Fellow of the Kogod Research Center at Shalom Hartman Institute and chief editor of Yediot Ahronot Publishing. He has published extensively in Israel’s leading Hebrew dailies. A graduate of the Interdisciplinary Program at Tel Aviv University, his academic expertise is in philosophy, Kabbalah and Hassidism.
Dov edited and produced the documentary “Making Way” for Israeli television and is the host of the popular weekly television talk show “Mekablim Shabbat”.
His publications include: Zman Elul (Am Oved, 1997); My Life with the Ancestors (Am Oved, 2001), which won the 2002 President Prize for Young Writers; and A Walk through the Void (Am Oved, 2007).

Just been moved to tears to listen to this unexpected revelation that as a spiritual seeker I know I always felt as true in my heart. Judaism is genuinely a gift from H", because H" is always capable to offer you relief from Judaism though Judaism itself, and rise your soul again so that you can keep going, rigenerated. Every time you realize that after a struggle and a crisis of understanding and awareness you have climbed another step up, the energy of matured lovingkindness released is huge and it spreads around in thousands of ways. The bar for excellence is held by the religious, not high, not even low, but left non-existent as god.
The religious are compelled by lack of reason to compensate with fantasyland vocabulary used in an academic setting.
Power is addictive, & the Christian enjoys the delusion of having a deity handy for ultimate free passes & answers.
Projecting certainty of having been authorized by a deity, just feels right.

48:20 about the egotism thing and the inner voice: There seem to be all kinds of voices within me. Some of them are of the ego, and some feel to be of divinity. The fact that I have other people around me, which I must and want to love and care for, helps me to differentiate between these two classes of voices. Without loving relationships with other people knowing God would be impossible.

Concerning fire and India, the fire had been playing an incredibly important role in Vedic culture and still is in contemporary Hindu culture. Agni (Sanskrit 'fire') is the god most often addressed through hymns in the RigVeda, the oldest Vedic document. As Dov Elbaum mentioned, it is considered that which connects the worshipper to God (or in Vedic times, to the gods). In medieval Tantric mysticism, the fire as the place of sacrifice came to be mysticized and internalized, same es other procedures from outer ritual: Here then, the sense objects become the sacrificial objects that are consumed by the "fire of consciousness" (the divine Self so to speak). What follows therefrom is that any object of perception, or perception itself, is or can be a sacrifice and an act of worship, by sacrificing sensual experience to the divine consciousness within. Within a nondual framework, it also denotes the sacrifice of outer duality / multiplicity into the unity of divine consciousness.

It's good to get an idea of the ANE traditions and language from which the Hebrew traditions and symbolic customs were derived.
For example, note the parallel concepts of the Akkadian simmiltu, which is a stairway/ladder to Heaven (a consonantal ordering which the Mandaeans preserve to this day, used to refer to ladders of stars), and the ladder of Jacob, transliterated as soolam.
Note that the Hebrew consonantal ordering is slm, and that at the time of Jacob, the Semitic word used to refer to this astral symbol was constructed from the sml consonantal ordering. The slm ordering was used for a "comet."
This cometary tradition was of course excised from the Hebraic tradition after the failure of the 66 ce revolt, and the Bar Kochba (son of star) revolt 70 years later, in preparation for what they believed to be the return of the Lord's Merkabah 6 years later, Halley's Comet.
Or for example, the tradition of the arks of Noah and Moses, where the word transliterated as teba was directly derived from Sumerian de, which is attested as de-ba = ta-ba-al, meaning "to carry," which is cognate to Biblical Hebrew sbl and ibl.
Words related to carrying frequently had this *bl construction. It is even present in the tradition of the ibilu = immeru = hmr = donkey that 'carries' Kings over land and Deities over the astral ocean, the anše aabba, the donkey of the big waters, as in Habakkuk 3. The "carriers" of Moses and Noah were teba to connect with the parallel Sargon birth narrative tradition, which uses the same DE meaning 'carry.'

I truly enjoyed this conversation. As someone whose spirituality is inspired by ancient Scandinavian sources (while perhaps being unorthodox in my more mystical or monist way compared to the often strict polytheism of modern reconstructionists) I've often found inspiration and a sense of great kinship when hearing you talk about your views on the sacred and divine.
Something in this talk really sparked an earworm in me when you mentioned growing a deeper understanding of your tradition through studying parallel mysticisms in Christianity and beyond - there is a tradition of similar outward knowledge seeking in Scandinavian religion called "Finfaring" which feels very akin to what you described. Perhaps Dr. Rune Rasmussen's video about it on the Nordic Animism page might be of interest.

I always wondered, that this man did not mention was, the burning torch / furnace that represented the Most High through the severed animals with Abraham and the covenant made between him and the Almighty. I still dont understand clearly that passage but I know it has something to do with what this man said regarding fire and it representing the Almighty!
Lastly, all free thinking men can challenge there families and communities to the point of isolating themselves from the norm. I think men who truly seek the truth that is found only in the face of the almighty will ultimately be ostracized and vilified, specifically because it’s not typical for men to want the truth found in the face of the Almighty! But after these unusual men die, they will be seen as truly enlightened and inspiring! I think the willingness to lose ALL and everyone in the pursuit of the real personal God, is the proof that you are a man after Gods heart!

Though tragedy, suffering, or pain, are certainly not precluded, in my experience, the LIFE ~ of a Mystic (as revealed, embodied, and expressed), IS "a Love story". I also liked his answer with regard to your question, "what is sin?": "Not to obey your inner voice. The call of God within you?". Given that howsoever be it, through intuition, insight, inspiration, or Revelation... about 50-ish years ago, one of those "calls" came to me very gently but clearly as "let your Soul overwhelm your opinions, for your opinions are killing you, and it is My Will, that you should live." The resultant accompanying 'napkin note' was "sin = S.I.N. ~ Self Imposed Negation". May we walk in The Light we've been given.

Can you explain a little better what you want to say, give an example of where you disagree and what specifically you find problematic?
@@Dalmatia153 "There is no sin" according to Dov. So he has thrown out the entire 24 books of the Torah and all of the laws derived by the Rabbis. That's 3,500 years of Jewish teachings. All morality is thus subjective, according to Dov. Of course, if you are one of the "little gods" mentioned by Dov, then your moral compass will work just fine. Sarcasm. I hope Dov visits his minyan, eats a good piece of herring, and listens to the truth of his brother and sister Jews. If ultra-orthodox is not the right flavor of traditional Judaism for Dov, he still has plenty of choices. Modern Orthodox might be a better fit. Idolatry is not a viable choice.
@@blessings42 There is no sin as such, but rather separation from God's face and the belief that all the Law is given so that man strives to see that very Face of God and be in some kind of "unity" with the divine. One day, when that "unity" is re-established, there will be no need for any written decrees, but the "Messianic" law will be written in the hearts of people by divine inspiration, which is what the Prophet Jeremiah speaks about. Now, whether that time has already arrived or is close is up for discussion, which is exactly what these people questioned in this conversation, without any hasty conclusions.

@@Dalmatia153 In his terms "Messianic law" would be an oxymoron. In advocating lawlessness in anticipation of a Messianic Age, he's being previous. When the wolf dwells with the lamb and the lion with the kid, as Isaiah envisions it, then the cosmos will be unified and one will perhaps be able to trust one's inner feelings. Until then "inner feelings come and go" as my favorite rabbi, Leonard haCohen, puts it.
Feelings come and go, Choen is right, but attitudes are a little harder to change. An intellectually mature being changes his views only in the face of solid and strong arguments, otherwise he does not change his position. Sometimes the arguments will be so strong that we will be forced to make radical changes. Of course, a person needs to be open-minded, brave, daring and searching in order to embark on such a path.

Zevi you mentioned "breaking the idol of Halachah" OK, but that does not mean destroying Halachah. Sorry, Zevi, this guest is teaching old fashioned idolatry plain and simple. A smooth talker, great voice, but a very confused person. "There is no sin" proclaims Dov. So he not only tosses out the Oral Torah, he also negates the entire Written Torah, starting with Adam and Eve.
