    I love Mason's story arc here. He is at the top but doesn't feel like it was hard enough to get there. He is hungry for a real challenge to test him so he see what his own limits are. The fight wasn’t about beating Dixon. It was about both of them gaining their due respect for being real fighters. They were cheering Rocky’s name at the end, but Dixon was being cheered as well, both during the fight and after his victory was announced. Dixon was more like Apollo in the first movie; he wasn’t an enemy, just an opponent. Because Rocky put up such a good fight, and Dixon had to get serious with him, it showed that he was a real fighter too, and could take on a real challenger and win. The fight proved both Rocky and Dixon were real, honest champions who deserved their cred.

    This film was a mirror of George Foreman coming out of retirement in his 50s. It was filmed right before an actual boxing match on HBO Sports. That's why it seems so real in the end fight. The crowd started chanting ROCKY! ROCKY! without being asked to do so by the producers. Stallone said you could watch Rocky 1, and then this and still have a complete story. A rarity in a series finale.

    As a guy, I always took this one a lot deeper. Age is like a circling vulture, ... awaiting the arcing over of our body's vitality. I too struggle with the admissions and surrendering to time. As guys we fight this. I find it a bit emasculating, yet freeing too. I appreciate the exploration of Rocky's thoughts around still feeling the call to compete. Perhaps I'm over thinking it or something. But Rocky Balboa finishes the series arc with the best two being the original and this bookend last chapter.

    Great reaction. Probably the best I’ve seen to this movie. This film is one of my favourite movies ever. It manages to be exciting, emotional, funny, poignant and dare I say it, realistic. There’s no attempt to hide the characters age and the whole concept of ‘an exhibition’ is a perfect set up. But as we all know, there’s far more to these films than the boxing. I’d say this entry is the deepest and most heartfelt of the series and it also contains dialogue and speeches that have now passed into legend. The widely and often quoted ‘it ain’t about how hard you can hit..’ is one of the greatest motivational quotes of all time and I’m a sucker for Dukes ‘let’s start building some hurtin’ bombs’ . It was also great to hear you praise Stallone. He was written off for many years as just another high T action star, but he’s always been a great actor and gifted writer and director. His work in this is amongst his best. Nice work.

  • @bryce253
    @bryce253 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The thing that people miss about Antonio Tarver who plays Mason Dixon is that the character eerily echoes his real life. He was one of the best boxers of his generation having won titles in multiple weight classes in the WBA, IBF and WBC. Yet he was never regarded as one of the greats because of the time he fought. Even when he won his first titles from Roy Jones Jr. people immediately said it was because Roy Jones Jr. was way past his prime and fighting in the wrong weight class. There was a lot of merit to that. And because Antonio picked up the title mantle at a time where a golden era was ending with great fighters, there really was not anyone impressive for him to fight left. So the narrative was that he fought cream puffs.
    I'm sure this is why Stallone chose him for this role as he may have drawn inspiration from his actual career. And it is a known fact that Stallone wanted the Rocky series to pay homage to a number of his personal heroes in professional boxing which he was a huge fan of so he pulled from actual champions and their championship fights as models especially Ali, Frasier and Foreman.

    Gonna show my age. Rocky premiered 1 year and 3 days after I was born. I feel like I've grown up with Rocky. This is by far the best finale to a movie series I've seen. It was never really about boxing. Boxing was the vehicle used to show what passion, heart, determination, and love can do in one's life. He never quit. He never laid down. No matter what the world hit him with. His heart was larger than life and therefore life couldn't crush him or keep him down. Sounds sappy I know, but if when my life here on earth comes to a close, people, especially my loved ones, my son can say that I never quit moving forward, that would truly be a life well lived.

    The boxer washing dishes in Rocky's restaurant was Spider Rico. The guy we see Rocky fighting at the beginning of the first film. He's the one that head butted Rocky and that Mickey said was a bum. Rocky was giving Spider free meals and Spider was trying to repay Rocky because he feels guilty.
    "He picks the mangy one that no one would want!" Not only that but he forgave Steps for insulting him. The "Punchy" name Steps suggested was making a comment about how he thought Rocky was punchy. There are two places that confirm it. One is Steps says, "You know I was just kidding." and Rocky answers, "Yeah you're a funny guy." The other place is when he asks Marie what she thinks of the name Steps gave the dog. She says, "I think it's disrespectful."
    "I don't understand exhibition fights." They do not affect the fighters record, or his standing within the sport. An exhibition fight is for entertainment purposes only. But it can mean more than that to the challenger if they win, or in the case of Rocky, just want to go out the way they came in. Sylvester Stallone said he wasn't interested in doing another Rocky movie if it was going to be a traditional Rocky movie. I mean Mason Dixon even broke his hand to make it more even. He insisted that the story have a real purpose because otherwise it would be unrealistic for an old guy to be fighting a champion in his prime.

    One thing is that Sylvester Stallone is a great actor at portraying men being emotional or upset. He is a good crier. He is famous for playing tough guys, but his greatest moments are when he is vulnerable. Not just in Rocky, but in First blood and even Copland. Stallone must get credit for being able to portray multi dimensional characters. I also like that the Rocky character shows that being nice, being generous, are positive, admirable traits for a young man.

  • @IrishGuitarGaz
    @IrishGuitarGaz หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This film was a perfect bookend to the Rocky movies. In Rocky 1, he didn't care if he won or not - he just wanted to prove he could go the distance. And in this film, it's the same. We saw that at the end of the 1976 film - as they call the results Rocky was only interested in finding Adrian, and in this film he's already left the ring and walking out before they even announce the winner.
    Stallone could easily have gone for a Hollywood style ending where Rocky (touching 60) somehow becomes World Heavyweight Champion again by beating Dixon, but that would have been pretty unrealistic. Rocky wasn't looking to reclaim belts. He's already been Champion twice and had his big wins all through Rocky 2, 3 and 4. I prefer that he wrote it so that Rocky just wanted to prove he could still stand toe-to-toe with a great fighter and hold his own, and winning or losing was inconsequential to him.

You get it … OK … So also … Antonio Tarver is a real fighter and they filmed this fight after one of the the de la Hoya fights in Vegas at Mandalay; They also shot an alternate ending where he won but this plays way way better … Also, on the 4K disc, Sly just released his director’s cut of this and incorporated all the deleted scenes which includes a stellar Paulie scene - which they should have included here - in the alley at the restaurant where he breaks down about Adrienne. Gut-wrenching… Lemme just say that you are going to LOVE CREED and that Sly got another Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe for reprising his role as Rocky.

    Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character in cinema history. Don't argue, just accept.

    This movie is set over a decade and a half after Rocky 5. Oldly enough Rocky and his 20 something year old son's relationship is not the same as when he was a pre teen.

    As much as I like Creed and Creed, two, this was the perfect ending for Rocky “Yo Adrian we did it”

    Mildly interesting story about this movie. I had a friend who worked as a editor in the industry. One day a comes to me with a couple of burned DVDs. Tells me that he had a couple of pilots for tv shows that I might like and the new Rocky movie, before any of them had been released. The Rocky movie was this one, and it was a burned copy of what goes out to oscar people because the bottom had for your consideration on every scene. The two unreleased pilots were for Chuck and the Sarah Conner Chronicles. It was interesting that the pilots that aired were a little different. Not wildly different, but different enough that it was noticeable.

    There’s actually an alternate ending where Rocky won by decision, but I think most would agree this version is the right one.

      As much as we all love Adrien , it was better she wasn’t in this movie, because she would have prevented Rocky from fighting again. She would have gone nuts if he tried.

    Pretty sure the promoter guy was saying Rocky would destroy Dixon in Rockys prime. Whenever he's not doing his promoter schtick he doesn't exactly talk Dixon up. He's got way more respect for Rocky then he ever really shows towards Dixon.

    Not bad for pushing 60 by the time it was released. But how about Coby? Big round of applause for her. Ain't she just the cutest. All caught up in this whole series. So personable and real. Definitely a favorite.
