The bag tax is 7 cents, the bag "fee" is 3 cents. Stores can charge for bags if they want to. Same as charging for debit purchases, deliveries, etc. It costs the store money for the bags. The 2 cents the store gets from the 7 cent tax is to help them offset the cost of collecting the tax. The other 3 cents is to add to the bottom line. The big issue is that the city created the tax to make revenue, not protect the environment. The city will raise the bag tax to increase revenues. Watch the store drop the 3 cents a bag and raise the price of everything one cent. Simple solution is bring your own bags, or shop elsewhere.

I’m in Colorado. We paid $.10 everywhere in the state. I’ve never heard of a seven cent rate, that’s unique. Corporate people probably assumed it was the same as everywhere else in the country.

Sounds like it should not be more than 5 cents a bag. 2 cents extra to the store is not justified. Crooks.

If they have a “club card” they know exactly who they owe how much to. But retailers won’t use that data to alert consumers that they owe. $16.73 to Susan jones.

So a product packaged in a plastic container or ziplock bag such as in the delicatessen is put in a plastic bag charging the buyer for the plastic bag (which displays the store logo) is supposed to reduce plastic waste? What is a waste is thinking that a new tax scam is really helping the environment.

I thought the tax applied to plastic bags, for obvious environmental reasons. Why is it being applied to paper bags that are both recyclable & decompose naturally ?

I keep washable canvas bags in my car for when I go into a store in a city where they charge and tax you on bags but once in Chicago I did some shopping but forgot to bring in bags so after being totaled out I ask the cashier did you charge me for plastic bags I was in a mood (a little more than $7.50). Mz.Thang: Yes! Me: I don't want to be charged for bags I want you to give them to me for shopping in this store. Mz. Thang: No, we charge all our customers for bags and you have to pay too you aint special. Me: lol Is that right? Let me ask you something; if a customer shops here and does not have their own bags and don't want to pay for bags when you have unlimited amounts of bags right here am I suppose to carry items falling out my hands or piled up in a open cart? (Sure I had bags in my car but I don't want to bag all this stuff at my car while also running the risk of getting Jacked mind you I'm in the Chi suspect neighborhood). Mz Thang: Mam you gotta pay like everybody else and you holding up my line (about 5 people). Me: I'm not paying for no M.F bags and you can have fun putting all this sh!t back on the shelf so your line finna be held up! before we both knew it the store manager magically appears from somewhere and says to the cashier bag up her stuff and thank you mam for shopping with us please come again because see he didn't want to let a more than $350.00 purchase walk out the door over some damn bags that should be provided to the customer on General Principle. SN: Everybody checking out in that line within earshot of what happened didn't pay for bags either. Sometimes you gotta call they're bluff!
