The Kimono World’s Dirty Little Secret

  • On a small island, off the coast of Okinawa in Japan, the world’s most precious kimonos are crafted using a very unusual element: mud. The meticulous technique, which has been practiced for thousands of years, uses mud and dried tree trunks to soak and dye the garments. The result is kimonos that are so high quality, they can last up to three generations.

      @@suhainzaman5064 Unique, I don't know. Japanese culture is influenced a lot by Chinese culture. Their traditional architecture is not native to Japan but to China. Kanji calligraphy is also from China. Some people even say their traditional clothing is influenced by Korea or China but that I disagree with. Modern Japanese culture is not very bright either, the social hierarchy and work culture make Japan one of the higher suicide rate in developed countries. No doubt Japanese culture is great, but it isn't the angel everyone thinks it is.

It was being over looked at a second hand store and I got it for a criminally low price of $5. I have a feeling this is the exact same type of dye as the black ink used in medieval European manuscripts: iron gall ink. I'm a little rusty on the details considering I learned this a while back, but black ink was created by mashing up oak galls, a weird type of nodule formed on the tree by parasitic wasps. When the galls were mixed with water and a type of iron compound, they would create a deep and durable black color that could then be used as a dye in manuscripts. This dying process might be similar!

    • @MarcusCato275
      @MarcusCato275 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not the exact same (ingredients wise) but the same chemical process.
      Iron oak gall ink is highly acidic and corrosive and damages parchment paper overtime.
      Silk is a delicate protein fibre and like parchment, if treated with iron oak gall ink, the acids would eventually eat away the silk.
      The ingredients used to dye oshima tsumugi are milder in acidity and the iron content of mud is rich but it isn't pure iron fillings (as used iron oak gall ink). The iron in the mud is there simply to induce the chemical reaction needed to turn the reddish pre-dyed yarns black and then the yarn is pulled out and rinsed.

      This method of dyeing (is it spelled like that? Looks weird) is a very very old one. I mean prehistoric old. I know of fabrics from europe and south america at least a couple of thousand years old. This method works by tanning agents (from the treebark or fruit) and Ironsalts (in the muddy water) reacting. At first the fabric turns yellow brownish but darkens after exposed to air again. And if you leave it in the mixture for longer or repeat the process as in this case you'll eventually reach a nice black. This reaction additionally protects the fibres (at least of wool, don't know much about silk) from deterioration. And thats at least in part responsible for the longevity of these kimonos

      @@Miquelalalaa At first it wasn't. It's a protective clothing made for utilitarian purposes. But nowadays people, specifically people from Japan, wear Kimonos not just to protect themselves but to make a bold statement about culture and national pride.
