The explanation of wearing white makeup in candlelight was fascinating, but now I really want to see Harumi's made-up face in actual candlelight! Made me realize I've never seen the white makeup as it's meant to be seen!
What an amazing transformation. Harumi's grace shines through to make it even more lovely. So Beautiful! I thought Tomoko looked beautiful in her kimono also, I really loved her obi.
Harumi looks SO TALL, and the wig and white makeup really make her look larger than life in an amazing way. That the attire literally put the oiran above the crowd for her walk must have really been something to see back then. Like Tomoko said, it must have made the oiran look like idols. Although, now I have to wonder if oiran didn't have amazing strength to carry all that weight. Wearing 30 kilos WHILE playing an instrument? No wonder the training was so intense! Edited for typo.
The most impressive thing for me was the wig. I don't know if at the time those were their real hair, cause that would've been crazy to wear this all the time.
@@mauvehawaii they have to be graceful tho. and they have to "interact with" customers that way, as well. knights have to carry swords and shields, and fight so ofc they're stronger. but i'd say oirans must be pretty strong as well
@@mauvehawaii They still probably had helluva strong core simply from keeping themselves upright, being smaller women with 30kg laid onto them is going to do that
I think I'm seeing a possible reason why big/tall shoes are popular in modern times, especially for women to wear. I'd love to learn more about why the Taka-Geta became the shoe of choice.
I assume it was both to show off all of the kimono and at 10:34 I think they are both about the same height, but look at how she towers over the other.
well, in Europe they were worn to keep the muck of the floor off your nice clothes, but Kyoto's streets in this period were cleaner relative to big European cities.
2 questions for you Shogo; 1. How normal is it to wear a kimono in Japan these days? 2. would you be willing to do a brief history of Japan. About the eras, a few things that happened during that time etc Thank you for the video!!
Thank you for your comment! For your question no.2, I made a video about the Japanese history in the past so I hope you can check this out! th-cam.com/video/QJzpiozMiv4/w-d-xo.html
Wow no wonder Oiran were considered stylish influencers back in the day, those kimono were gorgeous! Harumi looked beautiful and it seems like she was already taking the persona of an oiran at the end 😊Aww are those bunnies on Tomokos kimono?!! Omg I love it 🐰❤️
What an amazing experience, gorgeous Kimono Harumi picked out and she looks magnificent, it was adorable how your daughter was a little shy when she saw her mama all dressed up 👘🤗Thank you for this wonderful experience 🙏🏽
I was always told that the reason why the obi was in the front for Oiran and Yujio is that they took it off several times a night to service clients. I never knew that married women wore their obi tied in the front as well.
I heard another thing is because originally noblewoman put them in the front to show that they had servants to do their work, and so they couldnt bend down, and then the Oiran and other people (sorry I don't know the terms) decided to wear it that way too, but the noblewoman did not want to be compared to prostitutes so they wore it on their back again. this is a very generalized explanation from my own memory though haha
Fantastic! Harumi looks lovely in that kimono. Back in the 1950s my mother took a trip to Japan and there was a photo studio doing the same thing, my mother looked cute too in the big wig and a simpler kimono set.
Your wife looked magnificent in kimono. So regal! And the outer coat she chose was exquisite. The blue set off the embroidery colors so well. What a masterpie they made together!
Comparing the Oiran Kimono with the Regular Kimono is really amazing and truly a little bit similar, but it's also very different. Harumi looked truly beautiful wearing the Oiran Kimono and the transformation was truly wonderful! Thank you so much for a wonderful video!
The patience needed for the dressing to happen is unbelievable. These women have my greatest respect. Have actually witnessed similar dressing in Kyoto in 1972 when invited to a geisha house. It amazed me then and still does. These women and girls have my admiration 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏🙏
Guys, how interesting, and people have little understanding how much dedication is involved in the smallest details! Thank you so much for explaining and sharing your culture with everyone. I find it surpassingly beautiful.
Way back in the 80's, an art student friend of mine took me to the Art Mart, a building in downtown L.A. filled with shops where designers and interior decorators had stores meant for industry people, but on certain days the public could come in and buy. There was one store that had recently acquired the entire inventory of a wedding kimono rental outfit in Japan. They were selling the kimonos for $500 each. FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS. These were pieces that had rented for $300-$400 A DAY. I was frustrated and furious that I did not have the money to buy one, and it still makes me crazy that I couldn't. Those things were so magnificent, they were being sold as art pieces to hang on the wall. ARGH $500 ARGH HEADDESK.
Nagi didn't recognize her mommy.. 😅 Nice video Shogo.. Love the way you tell the history about Kimono at past time.. Btw, Harumi look very beautiful wearing that Kimono..
Learning to wear the clothes and shoes, might keep a lady fit, by itself. Is beautiful, sort of like grown ups playing pretend. I love the beautiful embroidery and colors..
Just watched this a few minutes ago. We are enjoying your series so very much. You, Harumi, your daughters and your associates are like family to us now and your visits are absolutely precious
After comparing the before and after shots, I must say that the way they painted on the mouth was the most impressive thing to me. You can really see the massive transformation from having no mouth, to having a mouth. Amazing! 👏👏👏
Wow yet another beautiful transformation. Harumi looks amazing. Love learning about the history and culture of Japan. Thank you guys for bringing us this beautiful content ♡
A beautiful and very interesting look in to the tradition and wearing of the kimono. The style, history and WEIGHT is phenomenal, 30kgs, that is Military Grade!!!! So many styles, the footwear, unbelievable. Thank You very much for this video.
Hello Shogo and Harumi. Nagi is getting so big, a beautiful daughter. Thank you for sharing your experience in getting your photos done at that fine establishment. To bad we couldn't see them apply the makeup but seeing all that is involved with putting the outfit on and the different layers of cloth and the shoes. And the outfit weighs 40 kilos when finished, Japanese women must be strong indeed. This has given me a better insight to the past when these outfits were worn by high ranked ladies of the time. Thanks again and I hope your family stays well and safe.
That kimono is absolutely spectacular! I'm so jealous! This is something I've always wanted too wear, a kimono of the Edo period! Harumi you are so lovely! BTW- are you familiar with Miss Hokusai? It is my favorite anime.
Harumi is incredibily cute! I think she should think about modelling these traditional outfits, it suits her so smoothly... Tomoko is beautiful and super cute as well, she should try them too!
So incredible. Those poses and the layers of clothes. I love how your wife's face changed with each layer and her smirk in the pictures, I could see an attitude change. Just incredible.
Harumi is so gorgeous! What beautiful pictures, such a treasure to keep for your children and future grandchildren. Your channel is wonderful, thank you for your amazing videos!
Harumi looks so beautiful! so breath-taking in that kimono. im sad to hear women were risking frostbite in winter for beauty standard tho (which ik still happens even today with anorexia and bbl etc. people risking their health just for beauty) 😭 never knew that "saucy victorian ankle" thing was also a thing in japan
What an amazing experience!! Harumi embodied an aristocrat from back in the ancient times😍😍 I am going to so my sue diligence and reserve a spot for my visit!! Thank you so much for taking us on this Hidden Gem🎉
OMG Harumi looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL! She picked such a gorgeous kimono🤯 The detail is so exquisite🤩 My favorite has to be the river running across the piece. Go Harumi❣️🎉
Harumi looks amazing!😍 I'd love to see this kind of services in more places, it would be so beautiful one day to see tourists trying out the traditional clothing of my region and really immerse in the culture!

Wow! It's amazing how much goes into getting a woman dressed like that! Makes you wonder if the actual Oiran had someone come with them to help them get dressed again afterwards. And thank you for explaining the makeup! I didn't know that's why they did white face with the red highlights. And the clothing is all so beautiful!!
