I remember you recommending Peter and Alice, and I own it because of you! I started it years ago, temporarily DNF'ed it bc I didnt quite have the time/headspace to read it all the way through. This is a good reminder to get back to it! I also associate that book with you not only bc of the subject matter but bc it was one of those picks that made me glad I'd found/subscribed to your channel, as it was under the radar and I knew I wouldn't have heard about it anywhere else (like Beyond The Pale by Emily Urquhart. Classic Jen throwbacks :) )

An older short book that I love is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Very moving nonfiction.

Peter and Alice was one of the first recommendations I took from you. The fact that I’ve been following you (happily) for 8+ years now makes me feel thankful, but also old haha.
My favourite recent short read is Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris: a lyrical literary-horror novella exploring grief among other things. Absolutely amazing

Regarding books centered around dinner parties, you may consider Babette's Feast, by Isak Dinesen. Please note that I've only watched the film, but I absolutely loved it. I'm thinking the book may be wonderful as well.

Loved Idelicacy and Western Lane. I’d recommend any book of Annie Ernaux, How Kyoto Breaks Your Heart, Small Things Like These, Whereabouts, The Inseparables, Thirst for Love!

Love this list! I've been in a short books mood as well. Finally got around to reading Convenience Store Woman and loved it. Wanted more of a similar length and theme - sounds like a few of these might fit the bill. Would love more "double feature" recommendations - short or long. I'm often reading 2-3 books at a time so having some kind of be in conversation is always a nice bonus.

I have written six of these down...haven't read any. In my book group we need short books from time to time, and some of these look perfect. i am now reading Home Child, the novel in verse by Liz Berry about children in Care sent to Canada from 1860 to 1960, ostensibly for a better life. Utterly gripping, and heart rending.

Thankyou Jen, I'd been looking for a vlog on short novels and here it is. I'd like to recommend Foster by Claire Keegan, I was a wreck after reading this, and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (written in response to Jane Eyre) also destroyed me. I've read What Willow Says and Mrs Caliban, loved them both.

Hi Jen All us strangers=marvellous. My recommend for a short book - my copy has 127 pages - is Angelica Garnett's Deceived with Kindness. Read on a Bloomsbury jag ages ago but stays with me. Daughter of Vanessa Bell, sister of the arguably more famous Virginia Woolf, until she believed hrr father was Duncan Bell. However.....

✋have read Peter and Alice out of your recommendations. Maybe 6-7 years ago? Loved it. Read it twice. Bought a copy for a friend too. Funny thing is i don’t like Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland or Peter Pan (I couldn’t finish Peter Pan). But i really liked this play. I remember I did quite some research into the background of these two and some other people mentioned , or not mentioned, in the book. I enjoyed the book , despite how much damage it did to my soul, as much as the extended research. Thank you.

I would recommend Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura. It is about a poor fishing village on the coast of Japan. To supplement their meager lives the villagers burn fires in cauldrons with the intention of luring passing ships onto the rocky shoals where they founder, whereupon the villagers slaughter the crew and help themselves to the goods to be had on the ship. One day they get a little more than they bargained for though. It was a compelling story and at just under 200 pages it can qualify to be on your list.

I read Permafrost when it came out in Spanish and I remember not being here nor there about it because I could understand the narrator’s point of view but I disliked her a lot (this is not always a problem but in this case it didn’t make me want to pick up the book each time I stoped reading). I think I should reread it though.
