      Hell yes! As a franchise, Lethal Weapon is superior to Die Hard, only because 5 is so goddamn awful, while Lethal Weapon 1-4 range from (IMO) "great" to "pretty damn good".
      Die Hard is clearly the best of the 9 films between the two franchises, but the Lethal Weapon films were more consistent quality-wise.

      I think Shane Black only had significant involvement with the first film. He has a "story by" credit on 2, but only "characters created" for 3 and 4.
      The best thing about Lethal Weapon is that Riggs and Murtaugh FEEL like their characters through all 4 films, whereas John McClane becomes a completely different and thoroughly unlikable prick as the series goes on.

      It depends. A half full gas can is more dangerous than a full can. It's oxygen mixed with the Gas that causes an explosion. Depending on how much fuel is left it may be possible but you're probably right.

      Terrorism definitely was a worry in airports, which is why they had metal detectors and x-rays. It obviously wasn't what it became after 9/11/2001. It wasn't "relaxed" but people could just take more objects on a plane, but maybe not a stun gun. Still, it works for the movie and in 1990 most people weren't aware of the things.

    Interestingly, respected critics Siskel & Ebert considered Die Hard 2 to be the best in the franchise. Roger somehow didn't like the original, while Gene ranked this first sequel as the 6th best film of 1990 above the likes of Dances with Wolves and Godfather 3. Screen Junkies even did a couple of "Honest Action" videos for the series, and it was determined that McClane's chances of survival was actually at its most plausible in DH2.
    It also has one of the greatest finales ever. Throughout the movie, the villains are always ahead of the protagonist. Even though McClane makes progress w/ each action scene, all of them (prior to the climax) ends w/ a trade-off of him losing: no one was left to interrogate after the baggage fight, the antenna array explodes and a plane is crashed after the skywalk shootout, Esperanza escapes after landing, and McClane ends up w/ blank ammunition in the snowmobile chase. All leading up to the plane fight where John loses against Stuart, and it seems that all hope is lost for Holly's plane. This is what Chris likes to call the "Breaking Point" moment, where the hero is at his lowest point in an action sequence and has to come up w/ a way to get out of that predicament. McClane does so after uttering his famous catchphrase and lighting the fuel trail left by the plane. With a single stroke, he finally defeats the bad guys and saves all of the hostages.

      @cockerpoodles1238 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah DH2 is great.....my personal favorite of the series, though I can understand why the first is considered the best. I never understood why 3, 4 or 5 would ever be ranked above the second film.

    • @VictorBalestrin
      @VictorBalestrin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could never understand Ebert's stance on the first two movies, but I suppose that's just a matter of taste.
      The one thing that makes me sad, though, is that, for all intents and purposes, this movie seems to have been retconned out of continuity by "Die Hard With a Vengeance" (McClane explains to Carmine's brother, in the beginning, that he transferred to the LAPD because of Holly, and the scene with Powell just shows that they're now co-workers; but by the third film, he's simply back at NY and fought with Holly *over the phone* - indicating that they either had a massive fight before, big enough for him to move to the other side of the country, or he never moved to LA).

    Really surprised you didn’t mention that they Cloverfield’ed this movie. It was an entirely separate script that was quickly re-written to be a sequel after the success of the first “Die Hard” which is why it feels the way it does. The first one came out in ‘88 and the second was re-written, filmed, edited, scored, marketed, and released in under 2 years (which was a pretty quick turnaround for an un-planned sequel in those days).

    I fucking love this movie. It's not as tense as the original, but it's got a brisk pace and is a lot of fun, even going as far as being a little self aware at moments with dialogue like "Another air duct, another basement. How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?" and the exchange with Dennis Franz's character: "You're the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time!" "Story of my life." They're pretty much telling you "Yeah, we know we're doing the same thing again. Just roll with it." The TV edit is so funny and almost legendary on its own. It's so bad that you wonder if it was intentional, and it probably inspired the TV edit for Snakes On A Plane, where they had Sam Jackson read intentionally absurd PG lines to dub over the original dialogue for television. Also, knowing how things end up between John and Holly toward the end of the franchise, you kinda wish that he had just went for that drink with the cute girl at the airline counter and called it a life.

Lol) Die Hard 2 like Temple of Doom is noticeably darker, more bombastic and even if a bit less refined than the films immediately surrounding it is an edge of your seat, no holds barred thrill ride when it gets going. I think it’s earned it’s place as an above average entry in its genre even if it seems to suffer from comparison to one of if not the very best of it which this film is following up on.

Die Hard 5 is obviously languishing way at the back. For me, Die Hard 3 just sort of loses momentum half way through and I'm not a huge fan of how it ends. It definitely has the second best villain of the series though. I quite like how fast moving Die Hard 2 is, and the airport setting, and that makes up for a comparatively weak villain. I love Die Hard 4. I think the idea of juxtaposing an old school analog cop with a tech oriented villain was great. Plus, I thought he and Justin Long were a pretty damn good duo and Winstead felt perfectly cast as John McClane's daughter.

    Renny Harlin actually does a good job on this film. This was a rushed production by 20th Century Fox. Harlan was pulled off of" The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" which he was shooting in order to pull this film together in a hurry. So, parts of this film are a little cheesy because they were probably made up on the fly. Harlan stages the stunt scenes quite well, and it's an action picture that's noisy and violent in all the right places. It hits all the right notes. I remember back in the day when I saw this in a theater, the trailer that was attached was the trailer for Predator 2 which had me pretty excited at the time. Oh, 20th Century Fox and silver Productions and the good old days of noisy action films.

    Loving these classic reviews every week. Surprised you didn't mention T-1000, but yeah I'm with you. It's not an amazing movie but it has its charm and I still love it and watch it every year along with the first one. Has some really great lines that people don't talk about and yes that icicle kill is sick.

    Yippee Kai yay Mr Stuckmann 😂
    I watched this recently and longed for the freedom that was in it. Huge cans of hairspray being allowed in the suitcase and smoking in the building and meeting your loved one just as they disembark the plane ✈️ it made me feel like so much has been taken away.

    Can't wait for the Die Hard with a Vengeance review! One of my all-time favorite action films! This may be sacrilege, but I like it even better than the first one. It's the "buddy cop" kinda aspect with him and Samuel L. Jackson that I really love.

    Anybody else surprised that Stuck never mentioned that the actor playing the 'terrible reporter' was WALTER ****ING PECK! from Ghostbusters. He wasn't as good in Die Hard as he was in Ghostbusters, but I still like him.

      @@mike04574 Fair enough....as you will likely see below, I have been through why I think 2 is unfairly disregarded. It doesn't put John and Holly's relationship in the dumpster, it doesn't reduce him to an alcoholic, it actually acknowledges that the first film happened and that he is a hero, better christmas vibe, dangerous villains, raising of the stakes etc
      Now, how on earth 3 and 4 could be considered better than that is beyond me, however that's just me.
