How to test and measure your amplifier outputs - avoid blowing up speakers

  • explaining off set measurement
I wonder how your amplifier/receiver is balanced. you hear the words from Simon...don't worry if there is a difference but do not connect speakers above a certain output level.
You can do the same test when you go score a amplifier and there are no speakers to test there, just take your multi meter and headphone with when going out scoring. MEASURING IS KNOWING

This is really handy for guys that play and buy old Adcom gfa (Nelson pass) designed amplifiers. They have no dc protection circuit , so very simple and easy to test this way !
As those are notorious for blowing up speakers that way

He is right about those switches to be tested. If you happened to own Carver C-19 Preamp. be careful because it comes with rotating switch which will thump out dc voltage as ou rotate it blowing speaker tweeter, which happened to me. Push button type switches are another bad ones, not much as knife type.

Very good vid. If people go measuring things with multimeters, be 100% shure to wire the meter correctly. If by mistake the meter is setup for current measuring, you will make a short on the leads, and this can be the end for you're gear, or meter...Old devices of say, 30 to 50 years of use, it's a good idea to check and replace all capacitors. I always check first bias current on output stages in amplifiers...

I am sure the persons who gave thumbs down doesn't even know 10% from what you know about electronica but you understand that even the most simple electronica lessons are abracadabra for many others. To beginners I could explaining to make the perfect O-uchi-mata but even after 1 year of practice most of them can not make a perfect one. Everybody have his/her specialty, for you electronics is simple but for some like me it's very hard. thx for your empathy and support Carlos, this is why so many people love you so much

I make it a habit of always making sure I turn the sound down on my 90’s Proton Power amp. My new AVR has a safety feature when switching between functions.
Where did Simon get his electronics knowledge? The kid knows his stuff.
By the way, fuck the dislikes!

    • @simonjaarsma5570
      @simonjaarsma5570 5 ปีที่แล้ว

i study electronics. If your amp has a relay always turn down the volume when powering up. There will be a small spark in the relay when it kicks in. If you have the volume up that spark will be bigger and will wear down the relay faster.

Andrew’s lucky to have your friendship and knowledge. His video of your place and the vintage equipment you have, work on, and sell, was amazing.
      Thanks for the response, Simon.
The Proton amp has about a 3 second delay after turning on, but I turn the volume to O when I turn it off, and check again before turning on. It was my first decent amp I bought when it came out, it still works great, and I love the dynamic headroom it has, the large green-lit VU meters and the “Power on Demand” feature the unit has. Have you ever seen the Proton AA1150?

First of all this guy talks too damn much like he loves hearing himself talk.
For a video that was supposed to be no longer than 2 minutes this ends-up being 15 minute video.
    2. when he's measuring the mV at 4:55 he says if the measurement indicates about 4 mV (can't understand if he says 4 or 40?!? anyone??) "you might want to put it a bit down" then he says "if it's around 8 (again, does he say 8 or 80) on it don't connect speakers because it will blow up the tweeters".
He then proceeds measuring the other channel at 5:29 which indicates 18.5mV. He says "that one reads around 1.8" WTF?? The dot is clearly behind 8 which is 18 ?!? (confusing again). Did he have to remove one decimal due to how his meter displayed the result?? Even the author of the video says "the other one reads 18". Most probably indeed that reading is 1.8 but the technician should have explained why he read it that way. For a beginner that never used a meter in his life this is far from straight forward.
I got a Sansui 881 from the 70's and the Aneng AN8008 multimeter bounces around the 60mV range when turned on.
Recently I bought a Musical Fidelity B1 and wanted to know how to measure the outputs as it came with a pair of B&W DM110i that had blown off tweeters. I've put it on the multimeter and one channel measures 19.6 whereas the other one measures 30.7 on the mV setting.

How do you determine the polarity of speaker wires coming out of a guitar amplifier?
It's just a black double wire. (One of the wires is smooth and the other has ribs.)
