I'm still wondering what the hold up is with combining the pod or any pump with an inegrated cgm. They're both on your body for 3 days why not combine them? my guess is when the pump distributes insulin it would affect cgm readings. Great info ty! I'll be talking with endo soon!
Given that the instructions for Dexcom have a minimum distance that it should be from the pump site I think your guess is right they must interfere with each other. It would be super cool if they could be combined though.
Great info and there is no doubt all of these devices are better than multiple injections per day. For me I do not see the logic of having to have a 3rd piece. Medtronic definitely had some drawbacks but you can't accidentally leave home and be unable to manage your condition because the pump and sensor do everything! I can leave home without my phone, rare but it happens. I can leave home without a PDM.

@@SharpLife4 But.......Is the Omnipod 5 authorized to use U200 insulin? Does the computer know to cut all of the insulin doses plus and minus by half when injecting them into your body? The Omnipod 5 is an automatic pump to keep your blood sugars at a set target. It changes the amount of basal based on the blood sugar reading from the Dexcom6. That it always keeps you at 6.1 mmol seems like a disadvantage to me or not? Does that mean you can't go lower through their system? Personally, through the night I am 4.5 to 5 mmol. going at like 6 in the night is a bit high. Does that also mean that after a meal you don't drop lower than 6? Or am I just seeing this wrong? Is there a option to turn this off?
I’m guessing that is only for the automated mode as a safeguard to have a little buffer room. You could probably turn off automation and go lower yourself.
I am on the Omnipod dash system. I also use an iPhone. So this is not compatible for me as of yet. I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with the battery life on the PDM for Omnipod Dash? Do you know if you switch to Omnipod 4 (in the summer my current NHS pump is up for renewal), when Omnipd 5 comes to the UK, you will be allow to switch from 4 to 5. I currently have a Dana pump, Android phone, Libre, MiaoMiao, Nighscout closed loop system which is wonderful, but the worry is there are lots of points of failure. Also is the Omnipod 4 closed loop with Dexcom currently using the Omnipd handset? Finally do you think the handset will be replaced with IOS App, I currently carry an old Android around as well as an iPhone.
First of al, thanks for this great vid. Very informative. But i have a question. Like the libre system, is it possible for a parent to receive glucose level information on their phone? Our girl uses the libre 3 atm and I love the fact that I can follow her at home on my own phone. It that also possible with this combination? Or can you only receive the info on the phone who is connected to the pod?
yes you can, There are 2 apps called Display app and the other is called View app. The Display app is for the podder and the View app is for other people that wants to see the info of the podder 👍🏽
Are there any informations about usage in hot climates ? We live between cities where the temperature could vary from 25°C up to 40°C, and we all know synthetic insulin can't support that high of a temperature. I wonder how the omnipod handles that problem, especially knowing that there might be similar climates in some states in USA
I never had this issue brought up with my endocrinologist in Florida where those temps are common. Lived there for 25 yrs too. I guess the omnipod may have some thermal protection in its design.
I have a quick question: So, I currently do have the Omnipod 5, but I’m in a bit of a crisis. We just got back from vacation, and I think we left the charger for it there. I’m struggling to find out what type/kind of charger to get to charge the PDM of the Omnipod 5. Could I use a regular Android charger, or does it have to be specific?

Thank for the info. My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed 3 months ago and we have been looking at which patch pump would be best. What do you know about the Nano patch pump and how does it compare to the omnipod?
Why would you start a 4 year old just newly diagnosed on a closed loop pump or any pump? I mean, does she have an endo who's even approved of this? First thing, get a Dexcom...and wait for her body to settle.
The pump has been strongly recommended by her diabetes team (Nhs) they advises all under fives to use a pump because of their age. Better management better quality of life. My daughter hates the needles so if I can do 1 in 3day instead of 15+ it’s already worth doing. What am I waiting to settle? She is T1 and will always need insulin regardless of how it is given.
@@sharooney I'm fully aware, I'm a type 1. it's disconcerting people don't realize what a pump really is, it's just a big syringe pumping insulin. it's no better or easier than shots, one's adjusting pump basal rates. ISF, ICR's all the time. Type 1 diabetes is not linear or stagnant. Most people go on pumps to control their basal rates, usually b/c of DP or heavily active - athletic, etc..Can't imagine putting a 4 year old on a pump especially just diagnosed. There's NO way she could even be stable right now. Everyone thinks going on a pump is easy..IT IS NOT; tubes can come out, clog, pods can come off, not good absorption, scar tissue, painful inserts, rashes from adhesives. no way in hell any endo I know would put a newly Dx only 3 months baby on a pump, or even an adult for that matter. SHE'S JUST DIAGNOSED! My god, do you even know what you're doing at this point. Who's gonna be administering the pump, PDM, etc? Does she wear a Dexcom. do that first. I'm 10 years into this Type 1 nightmare, and it is a nightmare. Everything changes insulin needs, ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY WITH A GROWING CHILD, SHE'S JUST A BABY. Do you know anything about pumps b/c I think you're not understanding the work involved. IT IS NOT EASIER!
@@sharooney IT'S BECAUSE OF THEIR AGE THEY SHOULD NOT BE ON A PUMP, ESPECIALLY NEWLY DIAGNOSED. Insulin needs at this point aren't even set. Well, honestly they never ARE. Type 1 is a damn nightmare! I'M SORRY BUT this is simply a lie; no endo i know would even put a teenager or an adult on a pump (especially a 4 years old) who's JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED. is her preschool teacher going to be administering her pump, is she trained. who's gonna calculate her carbs and bolus her? NONSENSE!
@@christopherone1 take a deep breath. Do you have a child with Type 1? Stop being so dramatic. I did shots for 10 years. The Omnipod and Dexcom is 1000 times easier. Period
Hey why is it a minimum of 110 for automated mode? That’s a bit high, I try to keep myself between 6 mmol/dl if possible (~73-110), which is much more like what healthy non-diabetics experience.
How does the algorithm for Omnipod 5 differ from T-Slim and Medtronic. Looper's seem to have a "more accurate" algorithm. I have a few friends using T-Slim and they love it but do express some disappointment as to bring down high blood sugars and one uses the "sleep" mode all day. I have used the Omnipod for 6 years. I attempted to use the Medtronic closed loops system for about 2 weeks. What a disaster. No support, alarms going off, bent canuala, yada yada yada. After the CGM this is the most exciting control item out there. I have had diabetes for 48 years so I go back to urine testing via a test tube. I couldn't be more thrilled and only wish it happened sooner.
Thanks for your wonderful videos! 2 questions from me. We live in the UK and our 3 year old son is on a Omnipod dash trial now for 3 months. Question 1) Will the Omnipod 5 be available to children this age? 2) In the UK, once you decide on a pump, you sort of need to stick to it for 4 years due to funding restrictions. If we went ahead with the Dash, when the 5 is available, could we switch?
Hello Mindori for Q #1 is intended for the management of type 1 diabetes mellitus in persons 6 years of age and older. For Q 2 is better to contact your insurance and verify if you are able to upgrade once the new device is available
FDA approval is used as a reference when submitting Omnipod 5 to Health Canada. Think of it as using your old manger as a CV reference. Now that Omnipod 5 has FDA approval, Insulet can submit it for Canadian approval.
Thanks for the video! One thing I haven’t haven’t heard discussed yet (just listened to the Juicebox Podcast episode) is whether there will be a way to enter insulin taken outside the Omnipod, such as an Afrezza or IM dose. Or if not, will the Omnipod 5 be able to handle something like an Afrezza dose without getting completely messed up? Have you heard anything about that?
That’s a great question! Adding other insulin delivery information is something that most pumps don’t offer. I am not sure about Omnipod 5 but will try to find out for you.
Insulet has not mentioned anything about other territories hence why I did not mention anything about it. I will be sure to do so if there is any information about it. Thanks for watching
I'm not sure about any of this. My son recently got diagnosed. The fact that you can't use the reader in tandem with phone control would not work for my situation at home. He's 7 and I'm not giving him a phone yet. All this feels so overwhelming.
@@Nerdabetic It's not the entire system on pod as a few parts are missing: enter carbs, alarms, change activity profile.
Is libre 3 support coming?
I am on the Omnipod dash system. I also use an iPhone. So this is not compatible for me as of yet. I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with the battery life on the PDM for Omnipod Dash? I charge it to 100% daily and it’s out of battery by the afternoon. I have gone through 3P DM‘s and they all do the same thing. Anyone else having trouble with battery life on their PDM with the dash system???
This is unknown until Omnipod 5 is approved here. Sorry I have no information on this but I do not want to speculate
Türkiye de var mı bu ürün?
chances are it won’t be in Canada for another year but i’m very excited!! Thank you. I wonder what the plans are for connecting with the Libre?
Yes, partnership with Libre has been announced. Timelines are unknown yet.
Libre 3 is no Option? Just dexcom? And no Apple just Android?
At the moment only Dexcom G6. Phone control for Android. Libre integration and iPhone support have both been announced but no timelines.
Thx a lot for such great & informative video! Is there any way to purchase Omnipod 5 from US through any online platform??
This is really good news technology for diabetes is improving at a fast rate
Yes! Incredibly good news
Will omnipod 5 work with apple iPhone and applewatch in automatic mode?
It will work in automatic mode even without a phone (if you just use a PDM). But yes, in the future it will.
Q i thought omnipod don’t need a Sensor it has in?
I have a quick question:
So, I currently do have the Omnipod 5, but I’m in a bit of a crisis.
We just got back from vacation, and I think we left the charger for it there. I’m struggling to find out what type/kind of charger to get to charge the PDM of the Omnipod 5. Could I use a regular Android charger, or does it have to be specific?
You should be completely fine with a normal Android charger (I assume it uses microUSB), but I would still call them to send you a new one.
@@triple7marc Received my Omnipod 5 Yesterday. Charger is a USB Type C, 5.0V 2.0A 10.0W. Pretty much like the fast charger for an Android phone.
@@dalesmaglik Yep, I got my OmniPod 5 a couple weeks ago!! How do you like it so far?
@@triple7marc There are a bunch of settings I need to find out more about. Going to see my trainer.
@@dalesmaglik It’s honestly very similar to the OmniPod DASH, so if you came from that it should be pretty easy to figure out on your own. If not, or if you just want more information, the trainer will help you 👍🏼
Thank for the info.
Thank you for the info my friend! Will the Omnipod support the Freestyle Libre CGM system in the future?
Yes. Insulet publicly disclosed their partnership with Freestyle Libre to integrate Libre into Omnipods system. No timelines at the moment.

This information is not known yet so I can’t comment. We will know this when Omnipod 5 is approved in the U.K.
What would the time frame be for Canada
FDA approval is used as a reference when submitting Omnipod 5 to Health Canada. Think of it as using your old manger as a CV reference. Now that Omnipod 5 has FDA approval, Insulet can submit it for Canadian approval.
Blood sugar control is still way off with pumps. Averages 30-50 over normal is no good
Exercise causes my bg to skyrocket lol
Thanks for the video! One thing I haven’t haven’t heard discussed yet (just listened to the Juicebox Podcast episode) is whether there will be a way to enter insulin taken outside the Omnipod, such as an Afrezza or IM dose. Or if not, will the Omnipod 5 be able to handle something like an Afrezza dose without getting completely messed up? Have you heard anything about that?
That’s a great question! Adding other insulin delivery information is something that most pumps don’t offer. I am not sure about Omnipod 5 but will try to find out for you.
@@Nerdabetic thank you so much! 🙏
Does the Afrezza work well for you? My endo won't even consider it.
Will it support G7 when it gets released?
G6 only for now
You only mention USA and Europe, please include Canada when discussing OMNIPOD 5
scheduling. Thank you from a present OmniPod 4 user in Canada.
You probably need a smartwatch based solution.
Android based smartwatch can work up to 48h with always on display.
Yeah phone to a 7 year old could be tricky. PDM might be the best option.
Will this affect the Omnipod Eros line? (I.e. will they discontinue it now that its 2 generations old?)
Omnipod Eros are not being withdrawn for now which is great news for me too 🙌🏻
Cool
When will it release
Limited release in the US in already ongoing. Full release timelines are unknown yet.
Why are so few phones approved. There are about 10 androids. And they are all older phones.
Only things I need is iPhone app and bolus button😩
Please do a video about the new Senseonics 180 day sensor!! It's so exciting 🙌🏻
Thanks God is aprove
Sooooo exciting!!
You can do the same with Omnipod Dash and Android APS 3.0. :) #WeAreNotWaiting
I wonder how omnipod 5 calculates IoB without a phone.🤔
The entire system is on the pod. The pod does all calculations not the phone.
@@Nerdabetic
It's not the entire system on pod as a few parts are missing: enter carbs, alarms, change activity profile.
It's more like a very advanced fallback in case your phone is discharged or out of range. Which is definitely a new level of safety. Also it can be useful for physical activities but still I'd prefer to have a control panel on smart watch.
Looking forward to see distributed smart insulin delivery system (pod, cgm, smart watch, smart band, phone, smart glasses, cloud app) which works in any connection chain providing max time in range with minimum interactions.
Thanks for the review. You're doing a great job 👍
Its SCI-FI for us in Bosnia 😞
I wonder when this technology will appear in Russia😅hopefully in this millennium
Hahah I’m sure!
I need Spanish translation🤪
You’re cute lol
inshoeelin. yeah..i said it.
