i feel like while the automated system is adjusting and learning, it’s like a new coworker learning the ropes on the job lol. and then for us it’s hard to resist the urge to be like “here just let me do it”
I love omnipod 5 automated mode ! One thing I’ve noticed is adjusting “correction factor” makes a HUGE difference (in terms of basal. On automated mode I have noticed I need more insulin compared to manual mode or MDI. But that’s okay, after I made some adjustments such as setting my target to 110,(during the day I set my target to 130) and lowering my correction factor AND carb ratio (for a stronger basal) my glucose cruises between 80-110☺️ (also I agree, trusting the system is SO HARD. This was one of my biggest struggles, but I learned to trust it after a few months and it hasent failed me yet🤪)
@ddeliaaaV: I want to thank you!! I was new to Omnipod 5 and running high, never low, with my endo's dietitian making TINY adjustments. After over a month not sleeping due to high alarms all night I took a chance and tried what you said (in slow cautious steps) and FINALLY it's working! Usually taking medical advice from the internet isn't a good idea but I was desperate and about to give up on Omnipod. You really helped me sharing your experience. THANK YOU!
I’ve had diabetes for 56 yrs & been through all the past systems & started on the tubed pumps since 2020, but since the OmniPod the 1st to the dash w/great results. I’ve been on the OmniPod 5 since June 2023 & it’s beyond being great, especially @ night no lows. I’ve not tried the Tslime, due to active lifestyle i.e. Firefighter/Paramedic & a tubed pump would be difficult. Your videos have been great & very encouraging! Thanks so much 😊
Hi! my advice to all Omnipod 5 beginners: use the first 2 or 3 pods in manual mode, not automatic. The algorithm will learn your individual behaviors and insulin doses faster. Each person has different tolerances and you can't expect that if you're high, the system will know how to safely lower your BG, it will be 1U for some people and 10U for others... If you start with manual mode, you will ultimately save time because you will teach the system yourself, and the system will improve your results even more.
That makes a lot of sense. I'm using the G7 w/omnipod 5 in manual mode until the technology catches up, so in the meant time, I'm learning a lot from these discussions ahead of time.
Andrea, I have been on the Omnipod 5 now for 6 months. The Algorithm is not perfect. I’ve had to help it along with small corrections, but do be careful because tunneling (a new term I learned) can occur if you rage bolus. I am also careful not to make corrections close to bedtime because I will run into lows. My carb ratio now is 1:8 vs. 1:15 when I started, and my basal algorithm has increased slightly. With that said, I sleep so much better at night and rarely run into lows at night, and my A1C’s have been the best they have ever been on this system. As you mentioned, pre-bolusing is an absolute must. I also found when I change PODS my sugars do tend to go high for a while. Discuss this with your doctor if it happens. Overall I love the system!
I, too, tend to go high for a while when changing pods. Unless I change pods while not having eaten anything for a bit. Changing pods after having a meal can be a killer (not literally, obviously). I went pod-less for 3 hours the other day and I finally put on a new pod just before diner, safe to say my BG climbed way up there.
How exciting! The one huge difference for me after starting to use the Omnipod 5 (just over 3 months ago) was truly understanding my IOB (insulin onboard) and how that affects me in the long run. NEVER, in my 16+ years of being T1D did I ever think about IOB and calculate that into my bolus. Because of that I also had to learn to trust the system. Sometimes I don't think it's giving me enough insulin, but actually it's spot on. And then understanding the timing of when to consume after injecting has also helped. I had to stay in automated mode and adjust the glucose range (tightened it up a bit for a lower ceiling) and increased the max bolus per hour. The numbers my educator set up were waaaay too low and I kept getting highs just like you in those first couple weeks (better than too low, though, amirite). Once I found the right numbers in automated mode it just... works. Never have I been so level and actually feel good because I'm balanced all the time! I'm looking forward to having the Omnipod 5 function with other CGMs, cuz the Dexcom 6 is horrible, which is what I had to switch to from the Libre (so much smaller, easier to work with, and lasts longer) in order to utilize the automated mode features. Some day. As an American, I simply wish I didn't have to buy half a pharmacy to make it all function. lol. I haven't used a pump since the original Omnipod back in 2007. So this was a nice return. Hopefully I can afford it for a long time to come. I look forward to seeing more updates of your experience with the new pump!
I'm so glad it helped! I've been looking for people online who have had similar experiences to me and so I'm very happy to read this and help in whatever way I can. ❤️
Me too Omni-Pod five I started October 14 going back to the doctor two days later three days later so they can put a new pod and I have to get to know how to use it myself. I’m looking forward to that but it’s very helpful watching your videos because it relates to myself, very supportive to watch your videos
Congratulations on the new system - I know how much attention and dedication diabetes takes period of course, but especially when you're switching pumps - it's a TON to adjust to! I just want to say - I'm right there with you and feel you on this! It sounds like you're not only doing amazingly, but that you also have the support of your doctor which is just the perfect combination! I'm so proud of you and thank you for making me feel supported through sharing your experience with me too!! 💙
I was in OmniPod 5 for a year, then switched to Tslim. They’re both very good. I personally like the Tslim more. No tubes is nice, but not a deal breaker for me. One thing the Tslim does that the OmniPod 5 doesn’t is to deliver basal corrections. I have fewer highs, but more frequent lows at night now.
I'm on Tslim and have not had a night time low in over 2 1/2 years I am happy to say. Night time lows were a multi time a week thing for me otherwise. Perhaps adjusting your night time basal rate to a little less insulin would help?
I can totally see your reasoning here, and I agree - I think the tslim is probably overall a superior algorithm, time will tell with my experience on the Omnipod 5…it’s been a very VERY interesting couple of weeks…!
@@dwightl5863 With the T:slim on auto mode, there is NO adjusting basal rate. T:slim uses body weight and total daily units of insulin and CGMS readings to determine the amount of basal insulin to deliver. I'm not sure it even considers carb ratio or correction factor for determining basal. It definitely does not use your programmed basal delivery from manual mode.
@@russellseaton2014 Under options, My pump, Personal profiles, Standard, Edit, In timed settings I have 6 different basal rates throughout the day and I am IN auto mode. FYI
@@dwightl5863 You are incorrect. The basal rates you have are for usage only when in manual mode. I have four different basal patterns too. One is the primary one and the one the pump defaults into when you are changing sensors. And you can manually pick any of the other basal rates too. When in manual mode. My primary basal pattern has a variety of doses that change every few hours. But when the T:slim is in auto mode, none of the basal patterns matter. The pump ignores them. In auto mode the pump determines the basal insulin you receive based on the CGMS readings. Thus my first response when I wrote in auto mode there is no adjusting basal rate. In reply to your original statement of "Perhaps adjusting your night time basal rate to a little less insulin would help?" You can adjust your manual basal pattern to 0 units or 10 units per hour. The T:slim does not care when it is in auto mode and determining the basal you receive based on its program and your CGMS.
Thank you so much for videoing the trial run on the Omnipod. The tubing on other insulin pumps was something that I really didn’t like. I really appreciate your comment and assessments! Now if only we could use our iPhones!!!!
I know!! Bring on the phone connections pleaseeeee Omnipod!!! And I agree - though some may think it’s superficial, the lack of tubing is a HUGE deal for me and a big improvement to my personal quality of life. The first month has been interesting to say the least though - the updates will be interesting I can assure you! LOL!! Sending you joy and wishing you a very happy 4th of July Christine!!
Hi there! (As always, Andrea, thank you for the brilliant video/instructions) The iPhone interface is a must for me. Any news/information from Omnipod on when they will offer the interface?
Appreciate your experience documenting the Omnipod 5. I was on the t:slim x2 for 5 years and decided to try the beta bionics iLet. It has been 6 months of trial by fire! I have had way more lows than I ever had with the Tandem. T1D for 59+ years, on an insulin pump since 1985. I’m investigating switching back to Tandem. Algorithms and I don’t play well together. With A1Cs in the low 6 range, I am too used to “micromanaging I guess. So many times the iLet will DRIVE me low because of an extended high after meals. I routinely have more IOB after a couple hours after the meal than I have ever TAKEN for any meal in my entire LIFE! Very frustrating! Thanks for sharing your experience, I was considering trying the Omnipod 5 but have now reconsidered.
Oh my gosh I am SO sorry to hear about your experience...constant low battles are THE WORST...I've been through periods of my life where I feel like my pump is trying to kill me, it just keeps sending me low! Gah!!!!!!! And the exhaustion!! OVERWHELMING!!!! I hope you find a system that is more easy to deal with - this is just not sustainable and so exhausting for you! I feel you my diabuddy!!!
Thanks for this video. I'm in the uk. I have the closed loop system on the 780g system. It is so difficult to let it just do it's thing I know! The dexcom sounds so much better as the warm up time for cgs for Medtronic is 3 hours😮. Sometimes though you can't wait for the maybe lows when real life gets in the way. Mine will be coming up for renewal in 12 months so this is so helpful. Wishing you the best from the UK!
Oh this is very interesting! And I know…so hard to jet set back and let it do its’ thing!! Every system has its own pros and cons I guess - I always find it a real learning experience (and sometimes steep learning curve too!). Wishing you all the best and sending joy to you in the UK (My beloved second home!)
I’m in the same boat with you. I just started my omnipod journey. I have to constantly correct highs. I made my settings a bit more aggressive by lowering my target glucose number and lowering my insulin to carb ratio and also increasing my correction factor.
Oh man - you have my sympathy - we're right in that same boat together! I posted my 3 month update recently - I'd be interested to see what you think of that, and if you've got any helpful hints or tips please share - I'm all ears!!
T1D for 26years & been using old school syringe & vial. Some basic questions before I explore this option. 1) On a scale 1-10, how uncomfortable is it? From being totally free to now having something attached to your body? 2) I read about the automate feature, does it auto calculate insulin for you and pumps insulin after meal or you still have to calculate calories and manually enter? 3) How often you have to refill? Depends on how much insulin is being used? Much thanks for your help.
When I started the pod I had a similar experience. Blood glucose was high, frequently. For me, pod placement does make a difference. On my arms my time in range was 50%. Pod placement on my abdomen is much better, time in range is more then 80%.
Thank you for an informative description of your initiation to Omnipod. Tubeless has so many advantages. As my Medtronic warranty approached its end date, I considered Omnipod but having experienced pod-administered medication before, I did not care for the amount of real estate it took up, and I would definitely misplace the PDM. I lost the little Dexcom receiver once in a theater but was lucky some Good Samaritan turned it in. After that, I stuck on an adhesive ring used for cell phones, and tethered it to my belt loop as needed. Switched to Tandem t:slim with Control IQ and looking forward to my next A1C. I didn’t know it could be so good! And the phone app is so convenient. I’m interested in your progress with Omnipod so see you with next month’s post. Wishing you continued success staying between the lines.
Thanks for the video Andrea. I’m on the waiting list for the dexcom but having seen this I might be tempted to go for the omnipod. I do agree the tubing can be a real pain!! Looking forward to seeing how you get on. Best of luck.
@@ShesDiabetic Sounds like I have more research to do. So, does omnipod work WITH Dexcom? Or does it replace Dexcom? The @philiptickner40 comment has me confused. I hate the tubing too (tslim). And I hate that even though I have control IQ set up with my phone, I still have to interact with the pump frequently and get error messages telling me it's been 12 hours since I interacted with it and it will shut down if I don't act immediately. And in fact, it has NOT been 12 hours. That's quite an annoying glitch. But not sure I have any other options right now since I'm a veteran who receives care through VA. Dexcom and tslim is what they gave me and what I've been using for a while. Man, I wish I could get rid of these tubes.
@@kristywhited8857The Dexcom and the Omnipod are 2 different things. The Omnipod and the Dexcom communicate to each other. That is how the pump knows what to do (other than your settings etc.) Like Andrea said if the Dexcom shows you going low the Omnipod stops delivering insulin. It took me several months to settle into the 5. I used the Dash for years before. No lows at night are awesome!
Great video on the new Omnipod. I would love to see a video in the future on the Tslim vs Omnipod, or at least your perspective since you have used both. Good luck with getting the system tuned in.
Thank you! I am DEFINITELY going to make a comparison video - probably will give it a couple more months and then record it, but I'm currently making ongoing notes of comparison points because there are so many points to compare and contrast for sure!!
This was my issue getting used to my pump and I went to my Endo and legit almost cried because I felt like I was doing all the things I needed to do to have my BG in range. I have now been on the Omnipod 5 for about 6 months now and it is now doing what I need it do on a more regular basis. I definitely would love it to be iOS compatible and have a smaller pod though haha
I'm right there with you - I feel like I'm now hitting a bit more of a sweet spot when it comes to it really 'working' for me and with my body. And oh man I'm also waiting for that iOS roll out!! Bring it on!!!
I’m not a Omnipod 5 user yet (“Classic” and Libre 3) but probably you can use the auto mode while you sleep to avoid lows, and switch back to manual during the day.
Concurrently, I'm on Week 1 of my Omnipod 5 Journey (after using the older "Eros"/3rd gen system for nearly a decade, the one with the big, bulky PDM) and it hasn't been 100% smooth. Surprisingly, the first day, it served me like I was God. "O Aaron, I shall please thee with stable trends." But then, Saturday, highs (got up to 271mg/dl), corrected for them, corrected more, more, more, and more. Didn't matter. Going home from eating out and I notice my pod was leaking insulin. The pod after that also leaked, and the pod after that leaked (although I still got insulin delivery with that one). Concerning pod #4, I tried switching to automated mode and the controller couldn't pick it up. This was 4 hours after I put the darn thing on. Had to discard it. Now I'm on pod #5, and because it's on the right side of my abdomen and my CGM'S on my left arm, it's like my chances of getting the pod to pick the CGM up are slim, so I'm stuck in manual mode. I'm aware that Insulet recommends the pod and the transmitter being slightly closer to each other. Still, I'd think they'd be able to talk to each other even if they're on different sides of my body. Not necessarily the experience I'd anticipated... EDIT: Just found out, "Verify that your Pod and Transmitter are in direct line of sight. They should be worn on the same side of the body in a way that they can 'see' one another without your body blocking communication." WELL, I'm either cruising in manual mode for 2-3 days or I'm gonna have a high carb marathon so that my pod will run out of insulin faster.
Oh my gosh I am so sorry to read all this, and I also can relate. Pod one was the dream...sometimes I wonder if I should keep resetting the pdm and continue to rest the algorithm 😂 But like...seriously 😅 I'm going to post and update soon and it's been a wild ride...I've not had any issues with the lack of connection with the Dexcom, but I have heard of people that have and that is just...headache on top of headache...gahhh! I'm so sorry!!! I must admit though your high carb marathon does have me chuckling...sound kind of fun in the sickest way possible lol 😂😂😂😂
Man, how shall we get this done, as the pod lasts three days and the G6 ten? We always have to change the spot where we set the pod due to the impact on my daughter's soft skin. So they are never in line of sight the whole time :( We are actually using the Eros too, waiting for Omnipod 5 here in Germany...
thank you for this great video ! I was kind of thinking about it ! for the past year and 1/2 I have been on the inpen and before that a Medtronic insulin pump and am sooooo thankful to be not connected as well ! its soooo freeing ! I also do not use a CGM as they have always aggravated me with how much they beeped all the time and i had to check my sugar anyway and they are always up to 30 difference either way wither higher or lower than my actual glucose monitor. its something for you to think about as well maybe !
You can bring food in with you anywhere you go no matter how much they want to say otherwise. It's part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It's a medical necessity that you be able to have any food you feel appropriate anywhere you go, including to a 7 hour UFC event.
I just started the omnipod on Monday. My nighttime sugars are perfect. But my daytime sugars are all over the place. 😩😩 But my mentor said we are collecting data the first few days to figure out my exact settings. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Loop and Learn on TH-cam did a couple of great videos on Omnipod 5 vs Loop and a panel discussion video on OP5. These gave me some insights on the algorithm and tips that I’d never thought of l. Might be worth checking out for folks interested. Turns out that a lot of the tips I was reading in Diabetes Forums from users would have no effect on the algorithm.
I am on T-slimx2 and my warranty expires next month. I would like not to have tubes but to tell you the truth, the tubing doesn't bother me. What I don't like about the omnipod is that it looks bulky and would stick out too far from my arm. I like that with the Tandem T-slim, I can change the infusion site if it is in an uncomfortable position. With the omnipod, I would be stuck with an uncomfortable position for three days. I decided not to reapply for a new T-slim and just keep my current one without a warranty. I am hoping it will last until the Tandem T-slim-3x comes out. It should then have a better algorithm. If my current pump fails before the T-slim3x comes out, then I will have my endocrinologist order me a new T-slimx2. Not trying to convince anyone to do a Tandem pump over the omni-pod but just letting everyone know that these are both good pumps and everyone has their own opinion on what works best for them. Hope the pump continues to work well for you.
Very surprised you switched over to the Omnipod when you gave so many glowing reviews of the T:slim. What you describe about the Omnipod is exactly what the Medtronic 670G did. Keeping you high all the time. Cutting out basal too early and not giving you any basal if you gave a bolus awhile earlier. And not being aggressive enough with basal to keep you at a good level. Best of luck. But I fear you are trading a much higher A1c for the "benefit" of being tubeless.
Cool! I started on Omnipod 5 a little over a year ago. I wanted to switch before that, but I was still under warranty with Tandem, and my endocrinologist wanted me to wait until the 5 was available because he feels I do better with a closed loop system. I did have to adjust my correction factor and insulin to carb ratio to make them a little more aggressive. The 5 will sometimes reduce boluses even if you are over target, and I need the full insulin dose, so 1: 17 typically gets me closer to what I had using 1: 20 on TSlimX2. I also programmed the system to allow more basal (2 units max instead of the 1.5 I had set up with the trainer) to be given when I am high.
Oh nice!! I can’t wait for the iOS connection to be approved - that will be a really nice convenience because carrying around essentially 2 phones isn’t exactly my favorite!
315 is the most insane number I've ever seen someone calm at..... so high damage I sit at 35 to no higher than 100 before I get high symptoms and those are horrible. Type 1 as well. I hope to see if the 6 is coming out soon. Heard it was approved by health Canada.
I am going to start an omnipod next week. I have been very upset and not handling this well. Like you, my numbers are in the 300s. I am so upset with this development.
I’d love to hear how others are managing the discrepancy between Dexcom use of 10 days and Omnipod use of 3days. Since a pod is supposed to be on the same side of your body as the Dexcom how do you manage that last day of Dexcom knowing that you’ll change it tomorrow, most likely to the other side of your body. Tips?
I always wear the Dexcom on my arms. I rotate the pods around that and on my back. If a pod change occurs on the last day or two of a sensor change I place the pod on my abdomen. It’s close enough to either arm so the signal stays connected through Dexcom change.
This being my second day on the pod, I have been entering a small amount of carbs just because I think I need more insulin. I went up in to three hundreds, I guess I should wait and not enter 10 carbs without taking in carbs trying to micromanage and give myself more but I want to absorb it before two hours because then what your body doesn’t absorb it but what happens to it after two hours trying to gain weight learning process but if you can’t gain weight from your carbs and elevated blood sugars past the two hour mark, where does it all go ,so I enter carbs don’t eat the carbs, just a little bit more to help bring my numbers down I suppose maybe I shouldn’t do that but I’ll ask the doctor when I get there tomorrow. They’re going to make an adjustment because I don’t think I’m getting enough meal time insulin but then again, like you said, it’s getting to know me, I didn’t know that. And like my doctor said, you’re gonna have to trust us you might run a little high in the beginning.
My doctor told me the exact same thing, and honestly, I didn't want to hear it, or believe it - or experience it for that matter! But it's helped tremendously! You have to give it a chance to work. My most recent video was talking about this very realization and struggle of mine, so just know, I'm right there with you! Completely and utterly!!
I eat a high carb, low fat diet, and I eat carbs ALL day long (250+ g/day). This might be challenging from the standpoint of 'letting it do it's job'. Any tips? I'm thinking of starting the omni pod coming from medtronic. Is there any way to manual bolus, correct, or just you just put in a larger basil than normal to compensate for it being slow to correct? Will the omni pod be friendly for people who eat a lot of carbs, and ppl who are super active, or do you have to suffer for a while? I'm really good at avoiding lows, but avoiding highs is my problem. Does the omni pod work for the latter? Can you even bolus?
I’m so behind on investing in pumps. 3yrs in, I’m still using flex pens! I’m assuming that you can’t calibrate the Omnipod to prime the device to your system. Also, do you use your glucometer to see where the Omnipod differs from your actual blood sugars?
I’ve been wearing my Omnipod 5 for 4 months now. Yes it takes it a while for the system to get to know your body. But now it’s not a big deal. I do hate the the fact I have to basically carry both the phone and controller with me everywhere I go. But hopefully things will be changed soon so that I only need 1 device to run both the dexcom and Omni pod.
@@ShesDiabetic don’t get me wrong. The omnipod has changed my life. I feel so much freedom not having to carry as many diabetes supplies with me everyday, but carrying 2 devices can be a bit much. Hopefully soon they will be able to get this fixed. Also I will be glad when they get Dexcom G7 compatible.
I know exactly what you mean about knowing you were dropping with the t slim. I always knew when it was happening when it started trending low and eating something and barelyy scratching low low
On Tandem T-slim for a long time! I hate the low/high warning system that wakes me every night (my bad)! Can't turn it off! Can this feature be controlled and/or turned off Omnipod? I would convert over I could turn it off! Thx
I hear you on the alerts! The only thing that the Omnipod will alarm/sound for is the urgent low alarm. Other alarms go off on your phone/reader, but you can silence all those as far as I know, all of them aside from the urgent low which will sound no matter what your settings. Definitely double check this info though because I don't want to lead you astray!!!
The Omnipod is like a child, you have to be patient and explain the same thing over and over, and it takes a long time to learn. Think of teaching your child to walk - lots of teaching, lots of falling down…. Before they learned 😄
Hi and thanks for this. My schedule sucks! I workout some days, I don’t eat sometimes and I don’t eat on a schedule exactly. Would this work for me? Plus the system looks really big…. I mean like people will notice it when I’m wearing it. I play basketball and I feel like if someone pushes me hard this will come off. Please give me your insights. I really appreciate it!
Yes, you have to trust the system and I am the type that I completely over. Analyze because I need to know what is gonna cause the possibility of a too low because my doctor tells me the pod will never give you too much well I have to know everything has a limit pushing point possibility to send you over the edge on a too low, the machine would have stopped the background slow drip that you’re getting that it’s programmed for to replace the long acting insulin so you would not have dropped too low. If you didn’t eat the 15 carbs because the pod would have sensed it because it senses predicts where you’re going to be an hour from now and it treats according to that so it would’ve turned off the slow drip that you’re getting in the background.
Some people say 3 months, others say 3 pods. I think it really really depends on the individual. For me personally I'd say it took a good 3 months after I did a reset of the algorithm (which I cover in another video) and things are still rocky at times. 😅
U-100 insulin only. If you're on injections you take a long and short acting insulin, but on the pump it's all short acting (just micro doses continually) - I hope this makes sense!
@mahmoudreda7725 To my knowledge all pumps use short acting insulin. Novorapid is a short acting insulin. U-100 means there is 100 units of insulin per milliliter of fluid.
I did, and will cover my reasoning in another video but essentially my Tslim was WAY out of warranty and I’ve always been very curious about the omnipod system so I decided now would be the perfect time to give it a go!
@@ShesDiabetic how was it way out of warranty, I thought you got it in Fall ‘20? Your video about being under the weather that was released in Dec ‘20 was when u first showed it to us and in that video when screen is paused with the Tandem u can see that you were in bed sick on Oct 12 ‘20. I thought these devices had 4 years of warranty on them so I was thinking Fall ‘24 not Spring/Summer’23.
Just FYI when/if the iPhone app comes out… you have to start all over with the system learning you. Same is true if you lose your pdm. Pretty dumb, you should be able to store the algorithm and settings in the cloud, but you can’t.
Hey Andrea, just wanted to say I love your videos. I was diagnosed at 29 (10 years ago) with type 1 and JUST NOW getting insurance. I haven’t even had my A1c checked since they diagnosed me 😬. I’ve had to be creative getting insulin during that time and am SO excited at the possibility of now getting the medicine I need and hopefully a pump (or pod). My blood sugar has been inconsistent at best sense diagnosis, but really want to focus on getting it under control. I have kids now and want to be around as long as possible with them. One of my biggest issues is I am always exhausted. How do you manage to stay so energetic and positive? I’m so sorry to reach out this way, but google isnt giving me any answers (just says “yeah, you’re gonna be tired”). Thank you so much for the work you’re doing. You’ve been an inspiration.
Being tired all the time is just part of being an adult in my opinion but exercising and working out helps a lot with getting the endorphins going and also helps with keeping blood sugar manageable.
I’m actually getting a test trial in the mail! Everyone has gave it high remarks, my wife, family, friends & doctor think this is a great move. Me I I hate machines and think this is the worst and idea and would rather break it!
whats the deal if you have an iphone? Do I have to carry that other phone looking thing with me everywhere? I am currently on Tslim and was going to try omnipod
Because the the OP5 app isn't approved for iOS - yep - if you're an apple used you gotta carry that extra receiver around with you everywhere. Quite annoying! But apparently the app is coming any day now...? Hoping!!!
Doesn’t protein hold sugar in and release it later…so even though meat doesn’t have carbs wouldn’t it keep you high because of the fat constant…like keep you steady.
Yes and no. From what I've gather it will take a VERY long time to step up the rates. I actually reset my controller and started with extremely exaggerated basal rates and though I'm still getting a conservative amount of insulin it's closer to what I need to stay in range.
@@ShesDiabeticOnce the system adapts and learns your basal rates can you see what they are? It might be useful to enter the basal rate into manual mode on the OM5.
Totally of my own accord - I have no affiliation with Omnipod or Insulet, and was not gifted the system nor did I get paid, sponsored, nada. This is SO important to me because I need to be able to honestly try any products out with a clear and open mind without any boundaries or limitations on what I say. Then if I like a product wholly I may look at partnering, but only if I am 100% behind the product of my own accord first and foremost :)
I’ll explain in more detail in another video, but essentially my tslim was WAY out of warranty and I needed to either renew that or try another system and I’ve always been super curious about the Omnipod system so I thought this was the perfect time to give it a go!
@@ShesDiabetic before I had switched to the T:slim I had asked my Endo about the Omnipod. He said he didn't know much about it for me to move from the Minimed to it.
The USA is a capitalist country, and therefore, in order to live well there, you need to open your own business. For example, a store of goods for people with diabetes and a tire business or a store of goods for cars. Well, in general, something like that.
My dad has Omnipod 5 and a1c went from 9 to 6 in 4 months. I also have Omnipod 5. Dropped from 11 to 9 in 2 months for a1c. Also make sure the Dexcom is correct because sometimes it seemed off which made Omnipod dose incorrectly. This is my first pump. Came from manual injections. My cannula came out once and made sugar sky high so I always make sure of that. I like Omnipod. My main issue not panicking after I eat and try not to correct until after 2 hours. Usually by 2 hours mine comes down. As the pump does cut off insulin if it seems 1 hour out you will go low according to IOB
All extremely excellent points! I do find it frustrating that I have to be more involved and aggressive with this system (so far at least) but I do appreciate the tubeless aspect more than I can possible express. I feel like me again without the tubing.
I have been vegan in the past but currently am eating meat again. I LOVED being vegan and prefer it, but I developed quite serious stomach problems that meant I could no longer maintain a vegan-only diet 😔
I hear you! It's taken me a LONG time to get everything sorted out, and it's still a learning process. I've got a tips and trick video coming out either this Sunday or next - I'm hoping that will be helpful for people! Sending you joy and hope it all gets better and better for you ❤️
i feel like while the automated system is adjusting and learning, it’s like a new coworker learning the ropes on the job lol. and then for us it’s hard to resist the urge to be like “here just let me do it”
Couldn’t have said it better myself!! PERFECT analogy!!
@@tyranosorus_bex 👍🏻🤣yes
Thanks so much 😊
1st tubed pump started in 2000 not 2020, which was Medtronic!
Hi! my advice to all Omnipod 5 beginners: use the first 2 or 3 pods in manual mode, not automatic.
I love love love this advice - so so so smart!! This makes SO MUCH SENSE!! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thank you for this info. I’m new to Omni too and am the worst at pre-bolusing!!!
@@thatjdmfd yes, I'm learning that it’s all in the timing in order to get it right.
Thank you for your input, Kyle. Very helpful! I’ m looking forward to the balance you spoke about!
I just got on the omnipod 5 2 weeks ago and had a very similar experience. Thanks for sharing this. It helped me out a lot
Hi there!
(As always, Andrea, thank you for the brilliant video/instructions)
The iPhone interface is a must for me.
That’s interesting as I upgraded to Medtronic 780 in May & got told it’s a 4 year contract??
The Omnipod 5 looks great
I’m in the same boat with you.
I have my intro kit for Omni 5 but haven’t had the training. So ready to start! Thanks for sharing…this was very helpful!😁
Oh how exciting!!! Good luck getting started!! you've got this!!
I've been a t1D for 24 years I was nervous too but my BS never been so good go ahead and get 1 fast you'll be good 👍
When I started the pod I had a similar experience. Blood glucose was high, frequently.
For me, pod placement does make a difference. On my arms my time in range was 50%. Pod placement on my abdomen is much better, time in range is more then 80%.
This sounds really hard! I applaud your decisions & hope things do settle in & you will feel better!
Thank you so much sweet Anne!!! ❤️
I used to have your email & then I changed mine - could I please? Say NO if you want.
Wishing you continued success staying between the lines.
thank you for the video. I'm in the process of waiting on the pod myself. I currently use the medtronic pump.
Yesss!!! WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!!!!!!!
Yahoo!!!! Happy to be here!!!
Great video Andrea! It looks like this Omnipod might need some more work. If you're constantly micromanaging it it might be better not to use it. 😬
I completely hear you - the first month has been very interesting…I can tell you that much - working on the video now and hoping to have it up soon!!😅
@@ShesDiabetic I can't wait to see it. I hope things ended up getting better for you after the first week! 😁
Thanks for the video Andrea. I’m on the waiting list for the dexcom but having seen this I might be tempted to go for the omnipod.
I do agree the tubing can be a real pain!!
Looking forward to seeing how you get on.
Best of luck.
Indeed - the lack of tubing has been a big deal for me! I’ll keep you guys updated with another video soon!!
@@ShesDiabetic Sounds like I have more research to do. So, does omnipod work WITH Dexcom? Or does it replace Dexcom? The
@philiptickner40 comment has me confused.
@@kristywhited8857 I have never had the error message telling me that I have not interacted with it in 12 hours. That is a glitch I have never had.
This is definitely an option! That's the nice thing about the system- you can kind of tailor it to wha's best for you!
So they are never in line of sight the whole time :(
We are actually using the Eros too, waiting for Omnipod 5 here in Germany...
thank you for this great video !
Great video, thx!
People have to push Sernova, Vertex and Viacyte a bit more so we have our functional cure aka cell therapy sooner!

This is a very good point! Sometimes I forget about stuff like that! Thank you for the reminder!!
Rage bolus!!! My new favourite term!
LOL! Gotta love a good rage bolus!!! 😂
I have been on O5 . Finally it works with my phone S23 ultra
Oh nice!! I can’t wait for the iOS connection to be approved - that will be a really nice convenience because carrying around essentially 2 phones isn’t exactly my favorite!
I’m about to start this pump and my big thing was the tubbing as well!!
@@user-nr5he3ic9o Thank you.
@@ShesDiabetic it means so much having someone to share and learn with you are so kind🩷 thank you for your page
Also, do you use your glucometer to see where the Omnipod differs from your actual blood sugars?
love the AirTag idea!
Thank you! I was quite excited about it - and so very happy to share this!!!
Totally agree - I wish the phone compatibility would just happen already!!!
They just sent in the IPhone App to the FDA last week so hopefully it will be soon! I’m very excited!
Great! That’s the promising info I was looking to find!🎉iPhone interface is coming!
@@ShesDiabetic don’t get me wrong. The omnipod has changed my life. I feel so much freedom not having to carry as many diabetes supplies with me everyday, but carrying 2 devices can be a bit much. It’s always a pleasure - the one month update is going to be quite interesting, I can already assure you of that!!!
Great omnipod add think someone is on insulets payroll!
I wish lol 🤣
Hello, Once you start the Omnipod 5 system. How long does it take to learn your correct basal rates and how many pods and how long does this take?
Some people say 3 months, others say 3 pods. I think it really really depends on the individual. For me personally I'd say it took a good 3 months after I did a reset of the algorithm (which I cover in another video) and things are still rocky at times. 😅
@@ShesDiabetic OK I start the Omnipod 5 on Tuesday 🙃🥹
What insulin is used in the pump? And What if Im on both rapid and long acting insulin?
U-100 insulin only. If you're on injections you take a long and short acting insulin, but on the pump it's all short acting (just micro doses continually) - I hope this makes sense!
@@ShesDiabetic I was confused because you keept saying basal rate.. I think of basal as long acting
@@ShesDiabetic also is U-100 the same as novorapid?
Thanks in advance
@mahmoudreda7725 To my knowledge all pumps use short acting insulin. Novorapid is a short acting insulin. U-100 means there is 100 units of insulin per milliliter of fluid.
When/why did u decide to switch,
I thought u loved your Tandem?
I did, and will cover my reasoning in another video but essentially my Tslim was WAY out of warranty and I’ve always been very curious about the omnipod system so I decided now would be the perfect time to give it a go!
@@ShesDiabetic how was it way out of warranty, I thought you got it in Fall ‘20? Your video about being under the weather that was released in Dec ‘20 was when u first showed it to us and in that video when screen is paused with the Tandem u can see that you were in bed sick on Oct 12 ‘20.
I thought these devices had 4 years of warranty on them
so I was thinking Fall ‘24
not Spring/Summer’23.
Just FYI when/if the iPhone app comes out… you have to start all over with the system learning you. Same is true if you lose your pdm.
Pretty dumb, you should be able to store the algorithm and settings in the cloud, but you can’t.
I swim - how's the adhesive on it?
Hoping!!!
Doesn’t protein hold
sugar in and release it later…so even though meat doesn’t have carbs wouldn’t it keep you high because of the fat constant…like keep you steady.
If your basal rates are not set accurately (i.e. less basal) will Omnipod 5 automatically setup correct basal ?
You’re switching to the Omnipod, or as a content creator are the makers of Omnipod, Insulet letting you trial their Omnipod 5?
In the comments in her last video I believe she said she switched to the omnipod.
@@ShesDiabetic P.S. Insulet is the maker of the Omnipod system.
❤Love the honest assessment before partnership!
Why the change?
I’ll explain in more detail in another video, but essentially my tslim was WAY out of warranty and I needed to either renew that or try another system and I’ve always been super curious about the Omnipod system so I thought this was the perfect time to give it a go!
@@ShesDiabetic before I had switched to the T:slim I had asked my Endo about the Omnipod. He said he didn't know much about it for me to move from the Minimed to it.
In Canada we get a 90 money back guarantee on all pumps. Scream for that!!
I do indeed scream for that!! That's BRILLIANT!!!
One pretty lady
The USA is a capitalist country, and therefore, in order to live well there, you need to open your own business. For example, a store of goods for people with diabetes and a tire business or a store of goods for cars. Well, in general, something like that.
That's not necessarily true. Businesses fail in the US too. If you really want to do well buying property is what you want to do.
Keep correcting frequently…
That kind of defeats the purpose of having an automated system.
@@Atrus999it does defeat the purpose a bit but it’s better than staying at a high BG for hours. Or IMO dealing with a tubed pump.
All extremely excellent points! I do find it frustrating that I have to be more involved and aggressive with this system (so far at least) but I do appreciate the tubeless aspect more than I can possible express. I feel like me again without the tubing.
Wait.....ham? Thought you where a Vegan?
I have been vegan in the past but currently am eating meat again. I LOVED being vegan and prefer it, but I developed quite serious stomach problems that meant I could no longer maintain a vegan-only diet 😔
Sorry. It will not learn. I have no idea how it can understand 110 is my goal.
I hear you! It's taken me a LONG time to get everything sorted out, and it's still a learning process. I've got a tips and trick video coming out either this Sunday or next - I'm hoping that will be helpful for people! Sending you joy and hope it all gets better and better for you ❤️
