    Yeah I have alwayus wondered about putting a varnish or a fixer down, then sprinkling the pigment onto it like that. Good stuff! Good demonstration.

      I’m starting a Sherman next.. I’ll have to re-watch my video as it’s been that long since I used pigments 😂

      @@modkitmayhem I am doing some 40k tanks, Castigators... but I am also going to be starting a 1/48th Corsair and kitbash it into a Kroot sci-fi prop fighter for 40k too. That'll be my first steps into scale modelling...
      Though Ihave an old F-14 Jolly Rogers special kit from Tamiya in my closet too haha, big one I got for birthday. I should try it out first.

      @@modkitmayhem I've used a mix of a few drops of water, a few drops of Humbrol Decal Fix, one drop of washing up liquid and grated pastels of desired colour and consistency on a couple of models now and the results have been fantastic. Paint it on, let it dry, then reactivate it with a water dampened brush to remove any excess.

    I wonder how white glue would go to make a thick mud. I mean, once it's on your model it's not coming off, so you might want to layer it, but if you wanted a really thick caked on mud on tank tracks or something similar, I think that would work quite well.

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian, give it a go! It might be a bit too thick and I'm not sure what would happen if it was watered down! I'll try some on the bottom of a tank next time - cheers

    I have some oil pastels laying around, do these also work or are oil based pastels not suitable for weathering?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest I don’t know how they would work! I’ve not tried oil pastels yet. Try them out on the bottom of a vehicle.. see how they react! Nothing lost if they don’t work.. or they might make really good looking mud 😀👍

  • @steveo4601

    Can the pastel sticks be used directly like a pencil to colour the model at all ?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could try but I think it would be tricky and you might break details off! They wouldn’t colour the actual model but give it a very dust look - dependent on the pastel colour you choose.

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far the decal fixer has worked the best for me. The dust/Pastels with water, just comes off when you handle the model overtime.

  • @biggestelvis
    @biggestelvis ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting. I'm wondering how it would go if one applied the dry pastel (which looks pretty decent and I could imagine might make for good aircraft exhaust), and then after went over it with a matte coat. Anyone tried that?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Give it a go, I tried with some dust on a wing but as soon as the varnish mixed with it it disappeared.. only collecting in the panel lines. Like you say it looks good when put it straight on but keeping it there is a issue.. maybe with enough of it and a misting of matte varnish over the top would work!

    Panel line for tank, what brand you suggest?

    • @modkitmayhem

      I used Mig to start but I now use Vallejo because I prefer cleaning with water and less smelly chemicals 😀👍

    • @davidrobinson4118
      @davidrobinson4118 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm back into modelling after messing about on and off for years. The amount of products on the market now is mind boggling. I'm looking for cheaper DIY alternatives that will do the same job which is why I like videos like this. For panel lining try artists oil colour, such as raw umber, and low odour thinners. Seems to work fine and works out a lot cheaper than 'bespoke' products.

      @@davidrobinson4118 Hi David, I have some Oil paints but haven’t got around to trying them yet! I’ve an old Tamiya KFz222 which needs finishing so that might be a good model to try them on.. just needs the chipping effect doing with hairspray - another technique I haven’t tried yet ha ha 😀👍

    • @davidrobinson4118
      @davidrobinson4118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modkitmayhem Same here with the hairspray chipping thing, not tried that yet. But then I am only just finishing my first bit of armour for, ooh, must be about thirty years! Started with the Tamiya panzer II, the old kit from the late sixties, really good value, especially with a discount voucher from Hobbycraft. I've gone for a fairly 'clean' look as my weathering techniques are basic at the moment. My excuse is that the vehicle has only just arrived in Africa and is not too beat up yet! Going to make a small desert diorama. Have a building on its way from Fields Of Glory so looking forward to messing about with that. I've done the figures that came with kit. They don't look too bad, just don't use a macro lens on them! Got a Panther, a panzer IV and a Leopard in line, all the cheaper Tamiya kits from the late sixties, early seventies. Also ordered the panzer 38(t) by Tamiya when I ordered the building, couldn't help meself but it got me over the threshold for free posting. Got other stuff in the little stash but the stand out kit is my Trumpeter 1/200 Bismark. Bought this about ten years ago for when I had more time on my hands as I always intended to get back into the hobby. I'm retired now so will start that after I've got back into the swing of things more. Sorry I do tend to waffle on and get carried away talking to kindred spirits. Take care my friend and happy modelling.

To be honest its really nice when people comment on my videos, its what its all about at the end of the day. So much time and effort go's into them that its easy to forget that there's a whole world of modellers out there ha ha. I'll do a video on chipping at some point.. record my trial and errors which in turn hopefully helps others. Happy modelling to you friend
