We were invited to Pat Metheny's dressing room several minutes after an amazing concert at The National Forum of Music. It's something absolutely unique as well as a sign of trust in our work and experience.
Pat Metheny is a music legend, guitar virtuoso and composer whose popularity extends far beyond genre boundaries. He is an artist loved by hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.
The artist has won a record 20 Grammy Awards in 12 different categories. The Pat Metheny Group project won 7 Grammy Awards for seven consecutive album releases, which is also an unprecedented success.
Throughout his incredible career, over the decades, he has performed and created with some of the greatest musicians of all time.
It is enough to mention such names as Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock, as well as the famous collaboration with David Bowie and the gigantic hit This Is Not America.

Pat Metheny is in my Mount Rushmore with Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Miles Davis. I've seen him live so many times for almost 20 years now and he is not only constantly reinventing himself but is still continuing to make top shelf quality music. Without a doubt, my all time favourite guitar player and a true legend

The fiery 1st iteration of the PMG, with Lyle, Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan, etched into my soul for nearly 5 decades on.
The very first PMG album I bought was Watercolors back in 1983. That entire album, including the photograph on the cover and the portrait of Pat on the reverse sends shivers down my spine each and every time I enjoy it (in every sense of the word). Seen him a few times live (in London) - love Paul Wertico's playing, and of course the late, great, Lyle Mays.
Absolutely. Saw them for the first time in 1977 and the PMG album which came out a few months later remains as fresh and vital as it was when it was released. A really remarkable artist.
I remember meeting Pat (with my then 16 year old son) in Toronto before a show. I’ve met a lot of heavies: Allan Holdsworth, Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Scott Henderson, John Scoffield, Geddy Lee, Steve Vai … but I was pretty awestruck to have chatted a while with him, introduced my son to him and have him sign a couple album covers.
I remember saying to my son, “Dude, someday when I’m gone, you’re gonna have a real story to tell.”
Truly, like meeting Wes or Miles….wow.

Wes, Miles and Pat. Oh yeah! I also had the pleasure of shaking Pat's hand and getting his autograph in NYC a couple of decades ago. I grew up with jazz and my dad played Wes on his reel-to-reel daily 😊

I've always admired Pat's honesty and directness when he talks about "quality" and "ability" and the creative aspect in playing in the jazz genre - he has the highest demands on himself and others and is not afraid to voice his criticism on certain issues in todays music scene, something very few artists do openly. He is truly a musical and also an intellectual giant ....

Saw him here in Seattle at Jazz Alley (jazz club) recently, and many times before. He's playing better than ever. My personal favorite musician of all time.

That was a great show several months ago. We are so lucky to have Jazz Alley. What a gem. One of the finest jazz venues in the country. The sound quality is so consistent, never too loud. I so appreciate that. Been to way too many shows where the sound is just too loud.

I've been listening to Metheny since New Chautauqua came out. I'm pushing 63 and last week found out he's putting out a new album. I've decided to fly to Austin, Texas to see him play and I'm really psyched about it. That show is October 12, 2023.
The guy introducing this video said that Metheny is the modern-day version of Mozart and I agree with him. When I tell people about Metheny I have always said he is a modern-day Beethoven, although Mozart is a great comparison as well.
Pat Metheny is one of the rare embodiments of Truth in Music, in/of any generation.

@@morbidmanmusic If you can appreciate music and know how it moves people and even heals, Pat clearly understands this. It's no wonder he was honored by the Society for Neuroscience. He deserves it, and I've also benefited so much from his music and an interaction with him back in 1983 at the first Pat Metheny concert I'd attended. He changed my life for the better, and he still continues to inspire me. And that's the truth.
Playing music with different artists together is like all of them painting the same picture of what they perceive and hear at that moment...So the music goes like the old saying " And the band plays on "...
I have listened to Pat Metheny for decades and finally saw him in person while in Berlin. The physical work he put into his show was palpable, the talent overpowering.Bravo

Pat Metheny is an all time hero to me since I heard him for the first time. He is also the reason why I still play the guitar today. What an inspiration!

I discovered Pat on British Forces Broadcasting Service back in 1986; It's For You... beautiful. Since then I have seen him live 5 times, last time in Münster in 2017 (unfortunately). Best gig was The Way Up in Cologne, where I sat just behind Antonio. His music has almost become a sound track of my life. I'm now 66. I miss Lyle, but continue to follow Pat's musical journey. There is rarely a day goes by without at least one Metheny tune. One all time favorite is Et Si C'etait La Fin... because, Pat, it isn't! God bless you and your amazing talent.
I saw him in concert in my hometown along with Gwylim Simcock, Linda May Han Oh and Antonio Sanchez at the Alys Stephens Center in January of 2017.

I first saw THE PAT METHENY GROUP (Lyle Mays, Mark Egan, Dan Gottlieb) back in 1978 in San Francisco at a small club called the Great American Music Hall. This tour was during the release of what I called the "White Album" cover. I was in total Awe listening to San Lorenzo and Phase Dance. I was 18 yrs old at the time, and was in heaven with this all. Wishing I was 18 again, as I would do it all over!!
Caught him in 1987 at The Mann Music Center in Philly. I was at Berklee in 1979 and caught him there. Great shows.
I attended my first Pat Metheny concert last February at the Majestic Theater in Dallas and it was AMAZING to say the least. He's my favorite artist of all time and I've been following him since the early 90's. I had red roses for him I wanted to throw on stage but one of the security guards wouldn't let me because of Covid. I wasn't expecting for him to pick them up. They could've been just swept in the garbage following the concert. Afterwards SEVERAL attendees said they saw me with them and was hoping I was going to toss them on stage despite the security guard's warning. I had a second row seat and had really saved just to see him. I shouldn't have listened to security. That may all sound stupid but I REALLY love his music.🌹🖤

So, yo had an opportunity to play with a very good (not genius nor virtuoso) guitar player Path Metheny.
I was introduced to Metheny's music by chance (well, CD, actually) when I was a sophomore in college. I had one of those BMG catalogs and decided to take a gamble. That album was Letter from Home. The 12 CDs came to my dorm about two weeks later and I'll never forget hearing it for the first time. I took some ribbing from my friends (this was the era of hair metal), but I really enjoyed it and felt new vistas had opened up for me. I think my musical tastes were elevated.

Good for you to have stood up to other opinions so that you could open up your musical vistas! Some people just don't 'get' jazz for whatever reason and a subset could chide you for following your musical tastes. I'm 62 and Metheny's music puts me into another plain/zone, whatever you want to call it. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story about taking a chance with new music. BTW, I used to order from the BMG catalogs, as well. LOL!

Europe has the deep roots in classical music which gave the harmony element that mixed with blues to become jazz. As mentioned below, in particular Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett had the classical harmony in them.The sweet logic of that harmonic language. In fact I heard Keith Jarrett describe his style and musical language as "Bachian"! Pat has that Bach in him as well in a mid-western way. The way he does melody in his writing and improvising is efficient and tasty. Agree with below, Pat is up there with the giants of jazz now and hes still going strong.

I first heard PMG in the 80s actually and the first song "Are you going with me" was played and that was a wonderful beginning to the decades of true jazz I totally enjoyed! And I lived in California! The 80s and San Diego and I was in my 20s! A great start to my life ☺️

I have been very fortunate to see Pat 3 times when Lyle was with us. Once when he did Secret Story tour. I will always identify him with Lyle because they created gold that was incredible each time you heard them. Just listened to the tune "Chris" from Falcon soundtrack. Wish Lyle was still here. No telling what he and Pat would create. It would be appealing to me no matter what because it was always enjoyable. Pat, IMO, is the Gawd of guitar. Thank you Wes Montgomery.

How does he get the hair?
I'm not one of these Pat fans who is always looking back to his time with Lyle, Pedro, etc. In fact my favourite part of his career was 2005-2014, after the last PMG record, when he was bringing out so many different projects year on year. However, I think he is doing Lyle a disservice here when he says 'everything is the PMG'. PMG was different because it was a compositional partnership with Lyle.

I think his interview with Rick Beato and I didn't notice this. It could be a temporary thing - a cold, bit his tongue, or teeth as you mentioned.

I wanna feel it! Oh yes! I'm totally blind and have been all my life, but this man's music has kept my love of music alive, and I sing today! (I'm typing this and can also read this using text-to-speech software, and typing is like playing the piano. If you know where and what the keys are, and you practice hard enough, you can even type or play without looking!) Give it a try; I dare ya!
Metheny's music has the greatest quality: The ability to evolve. However, this quality has a weakness: A particular style might not be as engaging as other periods. In the 1980's, I was first introduced to his music and it was a great challenge, but the more I heard it the better it became. Lyle Mays, Paul Wertico, and Steve Robby were in the group. Within a few years Metheny changed and these members left. He has now been committed to a more traditional jazz, and it no longer appeals to me.

But, I think….. that’s probably where the discrepancy wanders in?
Call me nostalgic?……. I don’t know.
But, here’s my, (probably slightly twisted ) take on it.
When I was introduced to PMG around 1982……. SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME!!
I finally could see what my songwriting could mean to OTHERS!
I slowly metamorphosed from a “ lyric based writer, “to a more jazz ballad based compositions “
Inside of me, was melodies, and harmonies that brought me to tears……… but…… I didn’t know exactly HOW to present them.
The moment I heard Lyle….. trailing off into a mesmerizing wonderland off Pats melody…… held tightly together by Gottlieb ( until 83) then this other phenomenon; Paul took to places with his organic, raw nuance.
Mark Egan was masterfully holding the bottom end from 1977 till 81 so I didn’t taste his magic until I visited the earliest of PMG album’s.
My first listening experience was on the double album release of “ TRAVELS”……. 1982… live version.
Of course, Steve Rodby was the bassist ( having taken Mark Eagan’s place since 81)
Side note: Egan and Gottlieb formed “ELEMENTS”
(Gottlieb teachs at University of North Florida School of Music…..
when not performing with the : Lieutenant Dan Band)
Soooo, ….. as you can tell….. I could go….. on and on….. !!!
The Pat Metheny Group quite simply opened the door to my possibilities musically…… for which I’m eternally grateful.
But, I think I’m learning a valuable lesson about “HUMAN ENERGY?”
That is to say, ….. when humans get together and dive into something with divine qualities such as music;
I think the bonding; ( mentally, emotionally, aesthetically ect.)
transcends the “original purpose “ of general collaboration……..
and perhaps morphs in a marriage of inputs,
ultimately generating a output that’s thematically driven although subliminal by nature’s design?
Soooo, as members of the group depart……. so goes their spiritual contribution ( as it were).
Obviously, I don’t have any empirical data on this subject….. just the ramblings of a mad man I suppose…lol
Another thought on it was ….. all these great guys were born very close in age:
Metheny ;born Aug 12, 1954
Mays; November 27, 1953
Gottlieb; April 18, 1953
Rodby; December 9,1954
Wertico; January 5, 1953
Egan; January 14, 1951

In conclusion, …….
I see Pat has taken his musical journey from one of formally thematic narratives……..
And adopted a twofold quest:
Firstly,
he has made it his life goal to seek out and “infuse” as many prodigiously inclined musicians as possible with the notion to expand and evolve!!!!
Secondly,
By playing on primarily “HIS” compositions, he can first handedly
get an unbridled foray into his pieces, being embraced and expanded upon by up and coming geniuses!!
While both quest are noble and well intentioned, …… I feel……. What is lost
……… is….. the “MARRIAGE”!!!!
It’s…….. sacrificed on the altar of “academics in excellence”.
Surely, the world will become more aesthetically blessed place….
IN TIME !!…… but, ….. sadly, the compositions that are born of blood and tears from a sonically evolving marriage….. is lost …. And….. we can feel it’s absence…… with the minds eye…. and ear.
Lyle past on February 10, 2020;
a month before the pandemic lockdown…….
He was 66 years old.
When I heard about it……. I felt as though I lost a close relative.
I hate to say it…… but I always thought to myself: what would I feel if the group disbanded or we lost one of them in death??
That was 3 years ago…… and now I’m 66 YEARS OLD!
I started writing a song in tribute to Lyle called: Dear Lyle
I’ve finished a lot of writing since the pandemic….. but….. Lyle’s piece is still undone………
However, It will be my honor to put it on my debut album this fall 2023
Interestingly,
About 3 months ago…… I was fishing around…… and found a REAL UNSUSPECTING TREAT!!!
I found EBERHARD……. as you may be aware, Lyle finished this just months before his passing.
I had no clue!!!!
What a wonderful surprise to find this (8 minute plus) work of art !!!!
And…. boy did I need something of this magnitude from Mr. Mays!!!!
I know of no pianist alive writing
with this caliber of attention/resolve,
technically astute, and abounding with gorgeous expressions….
………I’ve learned much from him.

but VERY, VERY HUMBLE!!!

It is nostalgia...I've like Metheny's many iterations over the years...but the first time i ever heard of him was Secret Story...and many years later, i still think it is his masterpiece and the best he ever did....But contrary to you, i like that he left the ''World Beat'' sound behind...and went with a more ''Acoustic'' and ''Traditional Jazz'' sound...
