    As someone else has already mentioned. Heavy drinking back in those days was glamorized. People thought you were a "hard man" if you drank a lot and scored a bunch of goals the next day. George Best was one of the greatest players of all time and alcohol destroyed him.

      He was extremely clever, you can see it on the pitch and when he talks, but never really grew up or matured. Can´t blame him though, incomplete education. Finished school at 15 when he went to Old Trafford. A shame that his formal education was never rounded off properly.

    The 2 touches Best takes at 12:31 are so clever. First touch to kill the ball & rope a dope the defender into thinking he can get it. Then a super quick second touch, done with a sleight of foot, to take it past the defenders outstretching boot.. First touch sets it up perfectly and second touch puts him in on goal. Done in the blink of an eye & executed perfectly on a shocking pitch(not that I think modern gr8s couldnt play on bad pitches too). What a player Best was. Shame about the alcoholism.

His career highlights should have been more league titles and big European Cup ties against proper opposition not messing about at Fulham with the likes of Rodney Marsh.

      @nige i had no idea how bad george best was as a player before 1966. I have watched loads of games from 1963 to 1966 and george was dissappionting tbh. He was never in the game as they call it. His passing was bad, he was easily took off the ball and he wasnt good in the air, and he missesd alot of easy chances than he scored. I didnt expect to see that, well all you saw of best in pre 66 was his goals and there wasnt many. Charlton was way much better than best and law at that time, then best became the greatest in the world from 1966 to 1972. When he was age 17 or 18 in 1964 a think, he had trouble getting past the liverpool defender and he just took the ball from best hard but fair. And sir matt knew it wasnt about speed as best was the fastest he had saw and it was just plain skill if done the right way! So at half time in this feirce and fast game the old man took george aside and told him "george your running flat out at full speed to beat him and hes catching you, you have to change your play? Right when you get the ball go at him at half speed and he will match you then when you see and feel him adjusting to make that tackle thats when you go up a gear and go faster then he wont catch you again george, plus drop back a bit to go inside to look for the ball, dont just wait on it to come to you go looking for it" in the second half george murderd the defender and never looked back again! George said it was maybe the best advice i got from the boss, as i just wanted to win and play good as i was still to prove myself so i didnt want to be too greedy or leave my position on the wing or showboat, i was a bit intimadateted by the huge crowd as well, like 60 thousand fans. Plus i was just age 17 or 18 so the boss told me to be more natural but as long as i could get back to help the defence or midfield it was ok to try stuff. He knew who could do what on the park. Alot of young boys at age 17 or 18 can be great players but when you play at this level and to 50 to 60 thousand every week it amazes you how they just lose that great skill theve got? A believe its the fear of the whole thing! You think what if i cant do this or that, what if the guy marking me is huge and just crushes me, what if i am through on goal and miss with an empty goal, its all what ifs, what if.... And what if the crowd boo's me? That would finish me. So you just have to try and keep trying and you do get through it but its never easy no matter who you play against, there all hard and great. Some boys just need a bit of direction thats all. If you have natural skill theres still alot that you dont know, like how to read the game and when to play that great pass that opens up the defence. But that usually comes to great players anyway. Its mostly positioning that they find hard but cant see it as you think well a havent left my position but i havent had a kick in 20 minutes. Its about going looking for it and you will get it and let nature do the rest and if your out of position when your badly needed thats ok it happens, even to defenders, but others dont see its becouse your doing another players job as well as your own?

    • @alanmctavish4802
      @alanmctavish4802 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @king arthur usa. Yes its sad that george liked to drink alot. Especialy if you are already alcohol dependent, meaning you have a problem! And it can happen as young as 20, 24. Very rarely will any one really be alcoholic at age 17, 18. They just think they are becouse they enjoy it too much, but they wont be physicaly and mentaly dependent on it. But it only takes another 2 to 3 years and you feel the difference, you dont just want it you need it. When george came back in 1973 after a year away it was easy to see that he had lost it. He had no pace, but he could still hit long passes with both feet and could read the game just the same. But how it makes a huge difference once a player like george hasnt got that speed. The kind that was so fast he would always beat any player chasing a long ball plus score from it. There was nothing better to watch than georgie going past a player that had a 6 yard start on him to then get the ball then turn inside to put the ball away. Or even just hitting it into the net after one touch from an awkward angle with any foot. But at age 26 he had lost that magic. And he was the faster player in the world two years before it. And the greatest. But once your speed goes, its amazing how much just by being so fast over 40 yards makes a difference to the way you play, but alot of georges great goals were very clever skillfull ones in the box around players, speed rarely came into it. It was all fancy clever skill. But the ones that did depend on speed to win the ball were just as great.

      @skevi mavride. Yes there does seem something a bit desperate in the way best and marsh are open and so willing to talk about anything really and most of it wasnt about football and the bits that were george still had to involve women in it. And just for money. George was doing really well in 1993 and years before it, and so did rodney, best and marsh could earn at least 5 grand between them for doing an after dinner wich they didnt have to say much, after the meal they would stand up and just talk for 5 minutes about the old days! And they were usualy doing at least 5 or 6 a week plus other stuff, so thats at least 12 thousand pounds a week each and more. But george should have left the game set up for life by the age of 35 easy as he had such a famous name and the public adored him. But it was sad it didnt happpen that way. I remember reading the newspapers saying george was always skint about 1983,84 but you dont buy a flat in chelsea west london were the flats are worth about 750 grand and more plus drive a rolls royce if your skint. No chance. Rich no, but skint never! But in the mid to late 1980s george was earning a fortune and here still. He was to well admirred to not earn money.

    When george always tells the story when he and mary stavin won 25 grand and scatterd it all over the bed its not that much money, thats about 2 months drincking money in london and if you add gambling to that it could last a week. 200 grand yes i can understand that. And even thats not that much. Maybe george did that with 25 grand becouse he was drunck. But in reality it really was going badly wrong at that time in georges life. He should have been a millionare by this time, but he was in alot of debt. He owed the tax man 32 grand in tax becouse when he came back from the states the year before the tax man said best had owed the money when he was playing for fulham. Now george isnt a stupid man, and he worked out that in all the years he paid tax he was the one owed money? But the tax men wernt interested and george was livid becouse his agent told him to declare himself bankrupt becouse any money or cheque that went in the bank would be taken by the tax men. So best had to live a hand to mouth existence for 11 years, being paid in cash by hand for any work he did. He even offerd the tax men 16 grand up front and the rest in 6 month but they said no. Its the lot or nothing. By 1992 best had owed 120 grand in tax due to interest building up and he got a good lawyer to make sense of the mess he was in and was adamant he didnt owe them to start with, but an aggreement was reached and they settled on 90 grand so george wrote a cheque out for them and his banckruptcy was lifted and best could use his bank again. It was a huge weight lifted of his shoulders and it turnend out he didnt owe 120 grand, the tax men got that wrong? Aye right you are mr tax man!
