This is such a special generation because it's the last time a powerful console was a custom made piece of kit and not just a glorified x86 box that you can replicate with a PC.
Dude, you ain't kidding. Everything from then on was off the shelf crap and PlayStation games look just like Xbox games. Xbox 360 couldnt rival Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII that looked like trash on Xbox 360, Uncharted and The Last of Us. PlayStation 3 could've done Gears of War, no problem, except it wouldn't have had screen tearing. But yeah, innovative hardware is dead and sadly we've gone to today's bull crap where Xbox can keep up with PlayStation now. You're among the VERY rare few that recognize this, wow! There's not many that appreciate the PS3 hardware such as yourself. Rock on, brutha
The launch PS3 was the most ambitious console ever built in my opinion. Played PS1, PS2, PS3 games. Built in Blu-Ray player. Built in web browser. Built in multi media card reader. Worked in relation with the PSP. Could transfer and save photos videos to the HDD or connect to a printer. The only reason it did not sell was due to the high price. With the CELL processor the PS3 was the most powerful console built up to that time. CELL was also one of the reasons why the PS3 was so expensive with so much capital in R&D at Sony. CELL was also why some companies did not want to develop games for the PS3. Developers wanted to keep using the same methods they were using on the 6th generation of consoles. PS3 made them learn new methods to develop games for and some companies did not want to do that. Once those companies started to learn the CELL architecture the games were really done well. The same time Sony released the PS3 slim a lower cost to manufacturer an thus a lower cost for customers. Then the PS3 took off on the sales numbers. I still do not know if Sony ever made a profit off of PS3.
They should re-release it with proper cooling, 45nm RSX/CELL chips that were used on the slims, higher quality capacitors and update the XMB to support 2TB internal SSDs. This time, a fair price would be $150 as the hardware is ancient.
Tbh, PS3 felt more futuristic than even ps4 and 5. I actually liked the font, the original boomerang actually looked very comfortable. Most people haven't seen the pictures of it in hands, i wish it was the standard. It felt like ps3 actually tried to get into the fps genre with killzone and resistance. They're still absent in the genre today
The packaging for the PSP headset actually looks like their current packaging for their accessories which blows my mind. They were already ahead of time. Fits with all my collection of boxes lmfao
Resistance Fall of Man was an amazing game. The series is fantastic, with a hole in the FPS market, I feel like now would be a great time for Sony to bring the series back from slumber. Make the story epic and the multiplayer addictive with large battles, a ton of character customization (especially for the chimera), etc!
Indeed. But Sony decided to leave FPS to third parties and make their first party games into the same homogenous genre that it is now. It's a real shame. Yeah, we got good games, but lost a few good franchises that were different along the way.
I love the early Ps3 years. Should do more videos about the early PS3 years. Like the early games that have the Spider-Man font (Mata font) on the box.
A fun trip down memory lane. I realized watching this that I REALLY didn't know what kind of games I liked outside of Need For Speed and the annual WWE wrestling games when I was getting a PS3.
I have vivid memories of dedicating countless hours to playing Warhawk in '07. Despite my lack of skill in the game, I found the gameplay and the thrill of flying around absolutely exhilarating.
I grew up on ps1 & ps2 as a kid but when 2006 rolled around and I entered High School, I was a complete derelict and unfortunately stopped gaming for quite a while. So, this was cool because I never experienced any of Sony's marketing for ps3 or games when they first came out.
You didn't miss much, to be quite honest. The PS3 in the early years especially were unequivocally a massive step-down from the PS2. In fact it was so disastrous that even a PlayStation staple like the JRPG genre was better represented on the Xbox 360. I used my 60 GB model more to play swan song era PS2 games and PS1 games on the early HD LCDs. Now, as Mystic also pointed out, the PS3 as an all-in-one entertainment machine, including the awesome back-compat feature and blu-ray support, was very much appreciated. It's just that the thing almost literally had no games.
I loved this era. I got a PS3 in 2007 here in Europe and honestly it was my favorite console growing up. I was definitely disappointed with the lineup early on especially having sold my 360 for a PS3 but in the end it was all worth it. Within a couple of years you had massive games come out. It definitely took Sony a couple of years or so but they eventually caught up to Xbox in terms of lineups.
Yet another epic journey down memory lane, Thank You! Seeing Ryan's Video like this reinvigorates the need to take apart my PS1, PS2, PS3 making them into one ultra gaming box (with proper cooling and easy interchangeability). It's not like we dont do it anyways to clean them.
The PS3 was always mysterious to me, growing up. Had a neighbor friend who’s family had a Fat PS3. I think the rule was that nobody was allowed to touch or move it. It wasn’t a Backwards compatible model, so I remember feeling pretty “meh” about it. They always had kidsy games. Like Cars and Lego Indiana Jones. They thought SpongeBob was inappropriate. We had 360 and Halo and GC and Wii and PS2 and plenty of Battlefront and Godzilla games at my place, which was definitely better. He had an uncle who was a total fanboy(backwards hat, like a total Viewtiful Joe lookalike) and called Halo, “Galo”. I wasn’t even mad; I was taken aback that an adult could joke like that. It was a different time back then. I remember his father got mad and grabbed him by the head for some reason. Didn’t see much of him after that. They eventually moved out eventually. He was a good friend. I have a BC fat PS3 and think about him now. So glad I’m not playing games like Cars or Lego 3rd party whatevers.
I got the PS3 Motorstorm bundle for Christmas 2007. My first two games were Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and The Orange Box. Good times.
Memory is fuzzy but I swear I saw a PS3 demo unit at some place like a Mall area Sharper Image or somewhere like that back around 2006/07 And I remember seeing (but not in person) the satin silver PLAYSTATION 3 launch model variant color
Hey Ryan - it was so satisfying to see you share this time capsule for PS3. I think this 2006-07 was truly the golden age of video games and TV entertainment. Everyone I knew had a PS3 and TiVo and was watching Blu Ray on their PS3 and doing Wii Sports bowling on their Wii. I miss this time a lot. Love the $70 gold plated HDMI cables, you were so right that this was the real upsell whenever you walked into GameStop or BestBuy.
Playstation had weird ads on tv from about ps1-ps3. Ps1 had that ad with the girl with the distorted face, PS2 had bunch it would take a whole comment lol. And PS3 had that babydoll one. Surprised playstation didn't keep up with that for 4 or 5.
I still prefer the Matta Font of the original "fat" PS3. Even the aggressive Red. Also, we will more than likely never see another Home Console be as open as the PS3. PS4, and PS5 both seem awfully restrictive compared to the PS3
I remember on the ps3 they would release PS1 & ps2 games monthly at some point so awesome to enjoy games I never got to play or play the games I’ve loved back then
I LOVE THIS planning on getting a PS3 and build like a console collection tough to find in my area mostly just PS3 Slims and PS Vita's and maybe PSP 1-3k etc.
Remember when kiosks were a thing and the employees didn't mind. Now days if there is a kiosk with a console the employees give you dirty look and make you feel uncomfortable.
PS3 was very much a big multimedia machine for me, so too was the PSP, the XMB’s utility was amazing. Part of my frustration/disappointment with PS4 was how much it ditched all that for a barebones machine, it didn’t even have a media remote at launch. And unlike the Vita, PS4 didn’t have much new/innovative features and inputs to make up for it, till the PSVR came. PS5 at least pushes things forward with the Dual Sense and SSD, PS4 will always feel like the most iterative/barebones generational leap for PlayStation.
I'm really disappointed and sad that these days no longer exist where consoles are sold for very little because they are outdated. Back then, this was done with SNES, PS1, Saturn, Mega Drive, etc. even with the PS2 and GameCube especially. Now that you are older and finally have enough money to take advantage of such offers and want to buy some consoles, such offers no longer exist. I remember I wanted to stock up on PS360 stuff. Unfortunately the prices were never so low that it was worth it and suddenly the things were out of the shops, replaced by PS4one. I wonder what they did with the stuff. definitely shipped to developing countries to be sold there. Brazil or South America is a popular destination. You could get new PS2 consoles and games there for a very long time.
2006. The year Europe was f*ed (again) by Sony. We had to wait for 2007 for the PS3. They even took a Spanish eurovision song and turned it into "Europe is waiting a Playstation". Xbox 360 really took a nice early advantage over here because of that.
I still have my 60GB system right next to my PS5 and like you is still my favorite system just the other week I put in uncharted and had some major nostalgic moments
I had a CECHA01 that I adored but it got the dreaded YLOD in 2012. I got a 320 GB PS3 Slim to replace it at the time but I have always missed the PS2 backward compatibility and as hard as it was to keep clean I miss that glossy black + chrome finish. It's been boxed in my closet for a decade and i've considered getting that Frankenstein mod done where they take a 40nm chip from a Slim and install it on the CECHA01 motherboard but people charge like $600 USD.
PS3 was a interesting era.. So many models and price points.....it was almost like an experiment until they focused on one model when they revised it into the PS3 slim...
Ahh, the light up Sixaxis PS button…that didn’t actually light up. I must’ve missed it where Sony explained why they decided against that last minute but I’m sure the excuse was ridiculous.
I always love asvertising material like this, regardless of what it is. It just lets you see how they wanted to sell you on something, and it's so cool!
The PS3 was rhe first console and games i bought with my own money despite being a rough time in my family financially and being in college had me borderline broke. It was where i just escaped. Lots of memories.
I love collecting "game paper".. Every time I went to a retail store I'd always grab a few of each system's catalogs and pamphlets. This is something I have been doing since the NES days. Those huge NES GAME PLAN posters used to be given away at a few places here in NY. I'd wallpaper my room with them. Seriously. I have pictures of them all over my bedroom. :) I'd also call many of the 3rd party companies (Nintendo thoughtfully listed all of their 3rd party licensees, along with their phone numbers in a pre-Nintendo Power listing. Many of them would send me things. Tengen was really cool and they sent me a bunch of ATARI arcade flyers.. For Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, among others. SNK sent me a bunch as well (Athena, Iron Tank, Ikari Warriors, Ikari II, ASO, and that lead to them sending me a ton of amazing Neo•Geo stuff (and me buying an AES at launch in 1990.) Cool video BTW. I love original content like this. -MattH
8:10 my PS3 came with an HDMI, and it was a factory bundle (not from store). I bought it in late 2008. So yeah there were some that came with a HDMI cable.
Long post ahead, more power to it if you read it. TL;DR: Sweet PS3 nostalgia. This right here is where, imo, Sony was at their peak. Sure, not in terms of hardware sales, but because they lost market leadership in the U.S., which at the time was the largest and most competitive market, they had their first-party and second-party studios working overtime on amazing exclusives. I didn't get one right at launch, which meant that I missed out on the 60 GB model, unfortunately, but I also didn't have a PS1 or PS2 growing up. As you might guess from my profile pic, I only had Nintendo consoles growing up, and one of the first things I did was use some of my HS graduation money gifted to me for an 80 GB PS3 as a second console and dedicated Blu-ray movie player. I remember my brother and I playing Warhawk religiously on it. Great times!
Im looking at my 80GB PS3 (with CFW now). I had that sent to me after my 60GB died in September 2009. RIP. I was patient to wait the time they said of 6+ months so I chose a 80GB which ended up being new, not refurbished. And despite moving from France to Spain, PlayStation Spain still replaced it. They said the 80GB would arrive within two to three months but it arrived within five days so it made me realize that I should have said that I wanted the 60GB as it probably would have arrived sooner than six months
21:23 Small correction: the "55" gigabytes were actually 25, with dual layer discs coming in somewhere down the line holding 50. If you look really closely near the center hole of your game, you'll see one ring of barcode for the 25 GB discs, or an inner and then an outer ring of barcodes for dual layer 50 GB games. With PS4, I believe all discs regardless of size were pressed to dual layer 50 GB discs, probably to streamline production and make it cheaper. A "waste" perhaps, but making exceptions costs more than the excess quality of the dual disc.
I was big into the 360 and only had a PS3 for MLB The Show. I since have gotten rid of all my Xbox stuff and just play on PlayStation and Switch. I love PS3 and it's great going back to this library I didn't experience.
@Mystic I also have some PS3 brochures that are in really good condition. One is the Play Beyond Game Stop 2008 brochure and another Play Beyond Brochure from 2006 that looks like the black one but a smaller folded version with more detail into the PS3's internals as well as the PS3 controllers SIX Axis. Was wondering if this was something you would like to add to your collection. The books are in good if not close to mint condition. I also have a PS2 GREATEST HITS brochure with sonys greatest hits lineup.
The PS3 was just incredible, its just a shame Sony seemed to be the only ones who cared about putting in the time to make games for it, or it would have been massive.
@Mystic The PSP bundle I had was the original launch modele with the wired headphones with that attachment, a demo UMD, and I want to say that movie 'Lord's of Dogtown', a case, and the strap.
Surreal to see Call of Duty have a small ad on a page for other Activision games, nowadays that game would get it’s own entire magazine 😂 Nobody knew how massive online gaming would become!
Recently bought a original PS3 with the backwards compatibility doesn't turn off so sending it off to get it repaired hopefully will have it up and running in a week
We all wish we could return to 2006 again, or for the first time. Fortunately, I own three complete in box launch model 60GB PS3s, all launch games, so I can revisit 2006 often. 😊 PlayStation 3 is the best PlayStation ever!
Hell no. PS3 created no great franchises. It didn't have any legendary titles. It was just better graphics. The best days were PS1 and PS2. Let me guess you are born in 1999-2000
@@Crafty-OneBetter graphics. Better media options. Better online features. Better performance. Also, some of my favorite franchises were born during the PS3 era: uncharted, infamous, motorstorm, resistance, and blaze blue. ❤
The PlayStation 3 is wonderful to play PlayStation 2 games. I enjoy using It for that and to play classics on ps4. Good times I had with the PS3. Cool video. ^_^

Back then cables for computers or consoles was expensive. Radio Shack was a little cheaper. Little Walmart didn't sell the cables yet.
I would have loved to be playing playstion during this era the ps3 era is definitely one of my favorites
PS3 nostalgia is my JAMMMM!
That’s a dope ps3 shirt lmao also more ps3 content would be 🔥 Ps3 slim was my first console those were good times
Ps3 nostalgia time, hell yeah baby
The 2009 era of PlayStation 3 is always king
Ps3 was underrated
21:23 Small correction: the "55" gigabytes were actually 25, with dual layer discs coming in somewhere down the line holding 50. If you look really closely near the center hole of your game, you'll see one ring of barcode for the 25 GB discs, or an inner and then an outer ring of barcodes for dual layer 50 GB games.
With PS4, I believe all discs regardless of size were pressed to dual layer 50 GB discs, probably to streamline production and make it cheaper. A "waste" perhaps, but making exceptions costs more than the excess quality of the dual disc.
Some great memories here. Thanks for the video
Still love the ps3 i play it from time too time too live through memory lane again

The PS3 was just incredible, its just a shame Sony seemed to be the only ones who cared about putting in the time to make games for it, or it would have been massive.
All that is long in the past now
what do you mean
@@timelymirror7826 who were you asking, me or unicorngamer9736
Wait, they called that bundle the GTA Trilogy even back then?! AND it's better than the "definitive" edition?!?!
Watching this while playing Final Fantasy XIII on my ps3 :)
@Mystic The PSP bundle I had was the original launch modele with the wired headphones with that attachment, a demo UMD, and I want to say that movie 'Lord's of Dogtown', a case, and the strap.
My dad got me the MGS4 bundle in 2008
PS3 games still better than half the shit that’s on PS5 these days
Surreal to see Call of Duty have a small ad on a page for other Activision games, nowadays that game would get it’s own entire magazine 😂 Nobody knew how massive online gaming would become!
Recently bought a original PS3 with the backwards compatibility doesn't turn off so sending it off to get it repaired hopefully will have it up and running in a week

Thats not true. EVERY PS3 has at least the option to play PS1 games.
I have that manual and I like the all caps PLAYSTATION, it's just like APPLE.
We all wish we could return to 2006 again, or for the first time. Fortunately, I own three complete in box launch model 60GB PS3s, all launch games, so I can revisit 2006 often. 😊
PlayStation 3 is the best PlayStation ever!

This makes me sad to watch. My PS5 and PS3 were stolen from my apartment yesterday.
Sorry for your loss my friend
The PlayStation 3 is wonderful to play PlayStation 2 games. I enjoy using It for that and to play classics on ps4. Good times I had with the PS3. Cool video. ^_^
