My Marathon. Lots of Chertie goodness to be found in Marathon. I have boxes full. It’s a shame to see what happened to Gloria’s. They had the best breakfast menu! What an awesome adventure and great video Ric. Thank you for taking me along. I’m homesick for the north. Who would not have a blast collecting amethyst. You and Penny rock. 😘
Thx Michelle, glad you liked it. It’s a beautiful area. Nice to know someone who was at Gloria’s. Looked like a nice place. I love chert also. We found some pretty nice ones. Sending love from the North
@@RockAndRollRockhound Lol!! Yup!! Drummers Are Awesome!!! I play a few instruments, but its been a while.. Yes! That IS clever use of pebbles for your Logo 😉👍.. P.S., I Subbed yesterday.. You Folks Made My Day!!! 🇺🇸😇
oh wow. had no idea there was such beautiful amethyst in the north 😍 Love it all Amethyst is my favorite. And love rockhounding. Still learning. But there are so many beautiful stones and gems. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
OMG I love this video 💯👍 The views and all the great stops along the way were beautiful ! I can't get over how many amethyst were laying all over the ground at the Panorama mine ! Thanks for taking us along on your awesome adventure 😊
Back in the 1980s we went to Makenzie just east of Thunder bay and got tonns of amethyst small rocks for my friends fireplace. We built his home on Banana bay just east of Rossport. It was a magnificent home 5 bedrooms and a gorgeous deck looking out on a ripple sand beach and islands where you could walk out for an long long ways with the water only chest high. I have retired here last year and found out that his home there sold two years ago for 1.2 million...lol. The fire place made entirely of amethyst was absolutely gorgeous!! Thank you for your video. It is a shame that all of the small towns on the north shore which once were thriving with industry are now dead.
The drive from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay is truly amazing!! We stop in every little town we can, and along the shorelines. Gorgeous scenery. We can’t wait to go back. I remember seeing a wall made of amethyst at Panorama Mines. Very cool. Thank you for your great memories!!
Hi Folks!!!L just watched this BEAUTIFUL Rock adventure trip!!! Oh my goodness!!! If it were not for Canada's STOOPID JABMAN.. I would plan a nice vacation up to the Panorama and follow your route back East! Makes me think of my former stomping grounds in New England! Been to Montreal and beautiful Ottawa... And after learning about Amethyst around the Thunder Bay area, I WANT to collect!!! Hubby and I live in S.W. Iowa, U.S...Farthest North we have been was Split Rock Lighthouse, on Lake Superior! Looks very country drive, but could not figure out how to get to a public shore area to go agate hunting..:-( But again, learned of T.B. via The Crystal Collector and have yearned to go!! Thank You for Sharing! You folks are fun, down to earth!! Happy, Safe Hunting! I dubbed and expect to spend plenty of ' Armchair Rockhounding ' with you! Oh!! Just curious, since I looked up the Panorama site I noted they charged 4$/ lb....So,, how many pieces did you end up tossing when price reality hit you after weighing your Cache??? Lol!!! I KNOW, I would have had to dump a bunch after resorting what we could afford to keep! Wouldn't it be tons of FUN to have hundreds of dollars to just go,drake your time and get some very cool pieces for jewelry, display etc!!!! So,, I subbed right after watching this one! Loved the scenery and attractions! I always get my online map using the National Weather Service one after a U.S. starting point to head into Canada... Ok,, sorry to rambke..I'm excited lol!! Not much to hunt for where I live, but there are agates, chalcedony, cherts/ flint, etc what you expect to find inbthe rift Zone down here..fosdils, some petrified wood, wooly mammoth fossils, rice rock, calcite, Native American artifacts which I still have yet to find.. A little gold ...minerals I have yet to i.d... 🙏👍💝🤗💯🇨🇦🇺🇸💎 God Bless and Be Safe Out There!!!👍😉🙋🏻♀️💚- Mindi
Hi Mindy, thx for subbing and watching!! It was a great trip, we did it once before. Northern Ontario is gorgeous for scenery, you really have to make it up this way. Did I leave any amethyst behind when I cashed out? Nope lol. I went there for that specific reason. I wanna try to make some jewelry and other crafty things lol. I came home with 54 pounds of amethyst from Panorama mine. Diamond Willow mine is much cheaper but you pay by bucket load, not weight. Diamond Willow is mostly little points on host rock, so most of your weight is host rock. Sounds like you find some amazing stuff in your area. Agates are my favourite. Banded chert is awesome. About an hour from where I live, we find banded iron, epidote, unakite, quartz and whatever else Lake Superior wants to throw this way. We do find some agates but it’s usually in host rock like basalt. Thx again for subbing, hope to chat again soon 🤘😎🤘
@@RockAndRollRockhound Thank You for replying!!!😀I guess, when I really think about it, there ARE cool rocks found down here!! A lot of glacial till it seems, from Lake Superior, ? Hubby and I have found carnelian, yellow ( Honey colored agate) and the like you might find in agates..basket probably etc.. There are a few rivers that have fossils and the gravels...just hard to access the older you get lol!!! One way around that us to bleak parking lots that use locally sourced travels which are river washed stones, since its mostly silts, some clay, lime...bedrock must be Very buried!! At keast, in the western part of Iowa.. I think one small area has some shale type rock plates.. This part of the country was inland sea as you may or may not know.. In my general area near the Missouri River, we have what's called Loess ( rhymes with Bus) or dubbed Sugar Clay soils.. So, not much to find at all other than the glacial till, some limestone outcrops...I've always creamy of finding Arrowheads, but have yet to find where they might be located.. On the Eastern side of the State, ( S.E.part ) near the Mississippi River are good sized geodesic with quartz crystals. Lots of Indian artifacts found..You can check out Geology of Iowa online..But honestly,v they Don't mention everything that has , or could be found.... Not the big rock hounding culture that could be. My hubby told me of an older gal friend he new that showed him a BIG good looking garner that she found somewhere in a Central Iowa creek when she was younger....many years ago. I wonder if it was in Schist... I did some mineral collecting as a kid, and adult when I lived in N.H., and especially Maine! Well, maybe we will chat again! To Good Times!!
Holy smokes! Thanks for the EPIC journey man! $4 a pound seems very fair for that amazing material! I really need to tumble some now! I love that piece @44:00 with the tiny points! And that Amethyst wall!!! Whhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaattttttt?!?!
Definitely one of my top rockhounding destinations! I LOVE the thunder bay amethyst! The crystals remind me a lot of what I find in Missouri. There is amethyst here but it's in an old zinc mine... I hear it's quite an ordeal to get to
It depends which Thunder Bay mine you’re talking about. The only public ones I know of are east of T Bay around the Dorian area. I don’t think it’s open in the winter. Probably starts around May to maybe October. I believe they have a web page and Facebook page if you want a more accurate time line 🤘😎🤘
That was an extraordinary adventure! My goodness it was gorgeous! the scenic travel and the different stops along the way! So very beautiful with all the greenery and it is just so peaceful and serene and exquisite! The hiking trails by the end was gorgeous and the basalt columns were absolutely stunning views to take selfies by the lookout, with the beautiful views in the background was devine. The mines themselves were so amazing! to just be able to fill a bucket by picking up huge chunks of amethyst off the ground and the other mine, where you did a little more mining, but thats to pull out some really beautiful points. and not just amethyst, but smokey amethyst, and what maybe ametrine. So in awe of what you brought back and the quality of the amethyst. And some huge pieces! What an amazing day! and a super fun trip! It was so amazing! and what you brought back was so beautiful! So wonderful, really, all of it!
