Question... we were there end of last year and met Al and 2 of his friends from Thunder Bay. At the end of the day One of the guys came walking up with a monster Apatite. Was that you maybe?
:D That WAS me! I found a good little spot I don't think anyone had been to before off in the bush (I can't help it, I'm like a dog, I gotta explore everywhere... a rock-hound of sorts....). If you remember the direction from which I came, it's worth taking a little mosey down that way!

Thanks Geology of Gems & Minerals! I was hoping that Titanite would come out a bit bigger.. it looked like it would. I'll still take it though, pretty sharp and highlights the cluster really well! We found others close to that size but were not complete sadly, got lucky with that one being mostly preserved in Calcite.
Thanks, I put a lot of thought off camera in most of those wondering the best way to remove the calcite around them so they wouldn't get damaged. I have too much respect for the 100's of thousands of years or more they took to create, I don't have the heart to hack them out in pieces. I will admit there were quite a few times my heart skipped thinking they were breaking. That one big one that's not cleaned took close to two hours as the calcite around it was very hard and no where to grab. If it wasn't for the jackhammer I would probably still be there chipping away haha.

I hate the cold as well, but I've grown up with it. Complete Crystals of this size are on the rare side as Nature can be brutal to ones near the surface. Still incredible they are intact after hundreds of thousands of years, if not millions!
We do have the other large one with Calcite attached, personally I like a clean crystal myself. The pink Calcite is really nice in this area though, really rich in colour.
@@RoughMarket I worked a couple years in a flagstone quarry (in MD) and one day we ripped into some pink feldspar. Took home 2 large pieces with permission from owner...!

A friend of mine from the channel MeMiner has recently posted a few videos with him and his dog Daisy finding quite a large deposit of Green Appitite, you should check it out if you haven't all ready. I'm quite enjoying your videos and channel and hope to see more .
When you start pulling them out and see how amazing they are it becomes addicting for sure! Still riding the rush a bit from these ones, was an amazing adventure. We're already planning the hunt for bigger! haha. Yep I talk a bit with MeMiner, good guy, and great finds! Thanks Thirst fast! It's the biggest complete Titanite crystal we've found to date. We found a few others almost twice the size but are partially broken and not complete. I'm sure some amazing ones are out there right now just waiting to be discovered!
I literally know nothing about minerals even though I live in a very mineralized area in the southern Rockies but I chuckled when he said we're going to very carefully remove this and the very next frame he was using a jackhammer, lol. Kinda like harvesting human organs with hand grenades.
Believe it or not it's true. There are hacks out there that go after these with a hammer and chisel and smash them to pieces trying to get it out. Calcite can brutal sometimes which is why I'm so far away from the mineral. By starting further away you can be aggressive as it removes a lot of bulk and not crack it trying to free it up with a chisel.
Seems to me it would be much safer to use a 4 inch angle grinder with a segmented diamond wheel in combination with hand chisels and sledge to cut out the crystal Im very surprised it has not shattered.
It didn't shatter because I took my time when up close, and understanding the Calcite is crucial. I have a 6" I sometimes use to cut them out of Calcite sometimes, really depends on what I brought and what's best. I've undercut smaller ones before then trying to break the section free they usually crack. Apatite is very soft and rare to find any that are double terminated and not naturally broken in Ontario.
That one won't be ready for 6 months or more, taking my time preparing it. When it's done it will either be in our private collection or on display somewhere possibly. I do have several smaller ones very simular to that and are really nice as well. Send me an email and I can send you some photos if you like. roughmarket@gmail.com

That first sample cleaned up almost looked like Unikate.
The titanite at 37:08 is my favourite. Great finds!

The clinopyroxenes and calcite really make the piece. You did a great job extracting pieces. They display nice and didn't get damaged.

I would have tried to extract it still embedded in the pink calcite. Much more beautiful to me that way.

Haha ya. As long as you stay far enough away you are good. By careful meaning not a hammer and chisel as Apatite is very soft.

As I keep watching you are too close to the crystal, hammering on its matrix. You could have cracked it...
I thought that as well at first but if you look closely when I remove Calcite on the one side you can see Nature had already cracked it sadly.
