I've clicked through so many videos, through so many incredible, weird ambient landscapes... I feel like I'm going on a train trip, seeing a succession of crazy, never-before-seen scenes from history, important, weird musics through the window as I pass... there's so much to explore. So many places to alight and dwell in the ambiences that are on offer. This stop, in particular, is brilliant

Remarquable Gardiner!!

There are three outstanding documents of the rediscovery of Rameau's stage music - Nadia Boulanger's 1950 LP, Gardiners late 1970's Prom performance of Les Boreades, and this 2007 Prom, which must be one of the greatest of all Proms. At the moment, this is the only one freely available in any form. When you compare it with the currently available DVD of Les Paladins there's no doubt at all who gets their Rameau right and who has no idea how to. The BBC should get this on to DVD now.

I love Baroque music and dance. It was so modern compared to formulaic Italian opera. The Paris National opera has a version of Rameau’s Les Sauvages that is insanely wonderful. It has millions of views. It’s pure joy. I hope Mostly Mozart does some Rameau new world type pop ups around Lincoln Center.

I saw this for the first time when it was broadcast on British television. I tend to be immensely purist, (i'm getting on these days) but I watch this, and I am elated that the art of dance and Rameau's beautiful music can be combined with a modern homage to Baroque movement dance and it work so well. I must be mellowing. I do hope not. Here's something else I've observed. Imagine for one moment that Sir Jphn Elliot G, is not the conductor, but is brought on to the rostrum and told to dance to the music. I see him dancing only and I love what he does. And coincidentally, the orchestra follows him. Try it.

Rameau's compositions seem to be enjoying something of a revival. I would like to think that an increased popularity for Baroque music in general is part of a reaction to Jacobinism, that fanatical doctrine which has been responsible for untold misery down to the present day.

Well this performance has certainly split opinions! Surely Rameau would have loved this display of esoteric wit in the dancers, and those in charge of Louis XV's court entertainments would have paid a premium for the African dancers - surely an exotic 18thC coup at Versailles!
BTW GJ, were you at Cambridge between 1997-4? Apologies if I have the wrong gent.

Dance is a good and refrishing idea here, but accompanying movements may divert attention from the music and at last You do not know, whether success is written ti music or dancers' accomplishments. But today favorized accumulating experiences, next time perhaps everybody needs to see sights of naked women musicians

@@user-gy8zs3sv8y but it's perfectly possible to get into the score
without dancers being involved, as you do every time you listen to a CD or whatever.
