"Suck it up" and "Do as you're told" were two of the last things I remember my supervisor telling me before I put my two weeks in. For what, another 4 years? No, thank you..
The fuggin military figured that out a long time ago. Suck it up doesn't work you have more people quit. Now to be fair, its not that they don't tell you to suck it up, they tell you why you want to suck it up. 2 different things though. Sounds like the same coin but it isn't. 2 different coins. Both have works/fails. One coin shits on you. One coin gets you paid. One coin is already in a lose lose. One coin comes in winning. Wich one you flipping?

Let's be real here. The CEO works for the board of directors. If you want to hate someone, hate the board. I've worked with many CEOs in this situation. They're given one demand by the child-like board: "we want more money, and we don't care how you do it." When there is nothing left, employees suffer. A tale as old as time.
It sounds like she wrote a script beforehand and got multiple people to re-read it, just to ensure that it sounds 'human' enough. Then goes completely off script and explains how she really feels.
After careful consideration, it's with a heavy heart that this CEO chose to preserve her bonus at the expense of the team. It's regrettable, to be sure. But if everyone digs deep and pushes those chairs, she'll be there to do the real work and make the tough decisions. Like preserving her bonus next year too.
To be fair, literally every company I have worked for treats their assistant managers this way. Home Depot said much worse behind closed doors to us... Then saw the same regional manager who shamed the employees over not cutting enough hours blow over 50k at the casino when we went after our Christmas party...
When a company tries really hard to make you feel like you are family, you know they will lay off half their workers just so the executives get their sweet sweet bonuses.
I work in a company that tries really hard (too hard, personally) to make you feel welcome. Like they throw pizza parties when the company surpasses quotas and have events every season. And I am still waiting for the catch because the compensation and benefits are pretty good. I think there are some leaders that really do care about their company and the people in it but they're very rare.
The place I used to work at went to great lengths to try and make me feel like I was part of something bigger, only to pull the rug from underneath me right after Christmas by removing me from the rotas and heavily implying any work in the immediate future would be on a case by case basis if they needed relief staff on events. Since I left, four other members have since quit, and they have a skeleton crew heading into the peak summer business period. So... That's fun.

I'm reminded of the story where a guy was in the break room talking with a co-worker, venting about how his clothes washer broke and he couldn't afford a new one. Their manager happened to be passing by, overheard this, and commented that this is why you want to keep a few hundred dollars on hand for emergencies, and without missing a beat this guy locked eyes with him and said, "You know how much you're paying me. You know I don't have a few hundred dollars lying around." I guess they could see the whiplash as those two realities collided in the manager's mind for the first time.

I work at Walmart (first mistake I guess) and this exact shit just happened to us. We just went through inventory. A lot of people did overtime in preparation. Our store made at least 90 million last year but the shrink loss was nearly 3 million (not good). The CEO just got a 4 million bonus last year, while our bonus was sub-par. We just had a meeting with the store manager (who makes a hefty chunk of change) and he's all "this is not a number to be proud of. I want you all to stop looking at the wall and instead in the mirror. All of us make decisions that impact this number. I want you all to to understand why this is a bad number and how we can fix it." Literally standing up in front of minimum wage workers and telling them they suck and it's our fault that the multibillion dollar corp lost what is literally pocket change to them. Mind you, we spent the last 6 months ranting to him about ways we can slow shrink and cut losses. What did he do? Listen? Oh nooo that would make too much sense. He shrugged it off and said that we're wrong, even though we've seen those things happen first hand
@Jeepus Chrysler it's not a right but it's supposed to be a motivator and thank you for hard work. If you treat employees bad but give yourself millions in bonuses don't expect them to put in 110% of their effort to help your company.

Quick reminder for all of you that she tanked the company's stock over half its value since she became a CEO 2 years ago - during one of the most profitable times for the company. A truly extraordinary CEO.
You see she had to give herself a bonus for being smart enough to take away everyone else's bonuses. Out of touch is an understatement for most higher level executives.
“No we’re not giving you a motivator to work harder, just motivate yourselves for us.” Also: “be kind, be respectful” Also her: says a blatantly unkind and disrespectful statement “leave pity city”

What corporations and CEO's really want is a return to feudalism. Only the law prevents it here, but it's alive in places like China, India, and many others
Heck I'm a janitor, and we get a bonus from our company near Christmas most years because they give it to everyone (I work at a Casino.) That alone makes you at least feel heard and valued by the company slightly, even if every other day you feel like a cog in a wheel. Being an actual asset to your company, I can't imagine how irritating it must be to have to worry about bonuses when you feel you've given it your best.
I work at Call Center, and for 5 years we got only once salary increase. For some time time now we have been asking to get salary increase because of the prices going up rent etc, and guess what, they increased hourly rate yet removed fully loyalty bonus that you get after working one year. That makes it technically at no change at all, different number same salary. In short any place that has logo similar to "we are like family here" you should avoid.
CEOs acting like "I'm working hard, so I challenge you to work as hard as I do!" But CEOs reap the benefits of their hard work... and they reap the benefits of YOUR hard work. It's the equivalent of like "Hey, I challenge you to give me more money. Are you up for the task?" That's not a challenge.
James Clarke, the 🤡CEO🤡 of Clearlink in Utah, literally did exactly that. Word-for-word, he said, "There's not one of you here, and I challenge any one of you to outwork me, but you won't."
@@konkeydonged I doubt James could do the work of most of the employees at Clearlink. They'd run circles around him, like most employees can of their CEO. C-suites provide little to no production value.

"I'm sorry you felt bad about what I said. I'm not sorry for keeping my bonus and taking away yours, as we try and meet out shared goals of you guys making me tons of money, and of me exploiting you."
I watched a video about what gaslighters/manipulators say and that was exactly one of the things they explained they say. Not apologising for your actions and making it feel like you’re sensitive or in the wrong for feeling that way so your feelings don’t matter.
Thank you for covering this. The idea that workers should have to give two weeks for example is laughable at best. Treat your employer the way they would treat you. They'd liquidate you over a single sick day so treat them the same way. I recently walked on Family Dollar management after being asked to step down to part time from full time on a non living wage for refusing to cover one shift even though I'd cover shifts once a week. I worked two jobs at the time to stay afloat and was expected to and had to cancel my better paying shifts several times after having my face ripped off on several occasions for my superior not being able to work their own shifts. I walked the next day. My mental health has never been better. Your low wage job will do everything in its power to trap you and extort your soul. Don't. Get. Trapped. Believe in yourself and find better. I understand not everyone can just up and leave. I walked with no money in my account and in the whole so I'm not trying to sound ignorant. You can do it if you work towards it. Stay focused, stay safe and stay well. Evolve. You deserve better.
Ah, the joys of at-will employment. On the bright side this goes both ways: if your employer can just fire you or let you go for no reason at any time, you can also leave at anytime, with or without two weeks notice. Only caveat is you can’t use the place as a reference or be rehired there but I’m going to assume if you left without notice that the place wasn’t worth working in anyways.
Good luck and hope you find something better. Work is not a gift the boss gives to you, it's a two way street. And if there's no respect from one side, there's no reason to keep working.
I ran into this shit the last time I went looking for a job. After desperately applying to all kinds of jobs that I know I'm more than qualified for, given my work experience and education, I ended up settling for a crappy, minimum wage retail job. Job itself was fine, if unfulfilling. And during Christmas, the hours were great. But, New Years rolls around, and I go from 30+ hours a week to 8, and the schedule changes every week, so I can't even realistically get a second job without there being schedule fuckery. So, I lay it out in plain terms, I need more hours to justify keeping this job. Their idea of fixing this was sending me all over the city to their various locations to pick up spot shifts that I rarely get more than a couple days' notice for, and often they are extremely far form home. I don't own a car, so traveling to these locations means either hours of bus riding, or expensive ubers. I don't honestly think my manager was being a jerk about it, I genuinely think she was trying her best, but corporate was not helping her out, and after 2 months, I just flat out refused to get dicked around. Now I'm back to working for my mother's business. It's alright, it practically goes without saying I'm treated better, and valued more, at a business owned by family. It's not what I want to do for a living, really, but the pay is alright. I just hate being tied to a job that's supplies 2 of our household incomes. I just feel trapped, because every time I try to leave, and go work somewhere else, the people there have no respect for me, and could not care less whether I stay or quit. Big companies aren't invested in people; their invested in man-hours. That's all they care about, and I feel that, every time I go job hunting.
Dude get on Medicaid, work a crappy job part time and enroll in college or trade school. Eff these companies and their policies. I hope that you prosper later in life and this will be a distant memory as a lesson. Honestly I stayed on the system off and on until I completed my education

I work 100% from home and I'm chained to my desk, have a digital punchcard for anytime I change status (breaks/meets/lunch/training) which has to be inputted manually, I'm always busy yet there are so many things out of my control that prevents me from hitting the goals set by the company, it's complete BS. The best part? We had our out of touch CEO tell us how we're doing so well as a company and that our clients are happy and we deserve all the praise. Yet they still won't give us a raise (or anything meaningful) because we're not hitting their unrealistic goals. Fuck this place.
Are you aware that the economy isn't doing so great right now? Ofc it'll depend on your industry, but for mine (computer hardware), the difference between 2021-2022 was insane. My bonus was 1/4 of what I had received previously. In 2021 I had gotten promoted and gotten crazy bonuses, but in 2022 I knew I couldn't expect a similar level mostly due to the market. So I fucked around a lot more, and probably worked half as hard as I did the previous year. Still netted a good performance review and some bonus. You have to set your own expectations and control your own life, if the company told you to jump off the building for a million dollars, would you?
The company I left recently did the same. They announced it 3 weeks before Christmas that no one gets a bonus and denied any chance of a raise. Crazy enough they were "surprised" when me and others employees left
The sad part is, no matter how much we make fun of her, or bring attention to this, she still is the owner of a private company, and she's not doing anything illegal, which means she can just wait it out till it quiets down and go on with her business.
