- We purchased this 1988 Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck a few years back thinking it would be a great farm truck. It didn't run long until it broke down, then was left sitting. Think it will run and drive?

Al,
When you shut the truck off make sure the throttle plates shut all the way or it will cause the engine to diesel when it's shut down.
GOOD JOB! You had it figured out in the end. It’s amazing how a carb can ruin your day😩.
Al's taking his entertainment value to new heights. Thanks for starting my day in a fun note!
Hello Al, you're making progress. The engine needs fuel, spark & adequate air flow to run properly.
It seems the float may not be adjusted correctly. Too much fuel, flooding out and a hard start, carburetor is not metering fuel properly at the moment. Adjusting float to proper settings will fix that. Need specs from the manual. Engine run on, fuel is not shutting off when you turn the key off. That's called dieseling. Look that term up so you understand what to do about that issue.
If flooded during start mode, depressed accelerated through the floor and hold hold pedal down. That will clear the carburetor enough to start again. Get a remote starter trigger. That will help a lot during your diagnostic and adjustment phases.
Finally, adjusting spark timing will perk this truck up. Faster starts & more power too. Don't forget to hook up the vacuum advance hose from carburetor to the distributor. You're a brave guy for attempting stuff like this. (Hands clapping) 😅😅
NON ETHANOL FUEL A MUST FOR OLDER SMALL ENGINES ----STICKING FLOAT VALVE RETURNS EVERY TIME WITH THE ETHANOL Been watching your channel many years --YOU AMAZE me with your talent
Al is the JACK of ALL TRADES !!
If it’s going to set, not being run for extended periods, fuel stabilizer in the gas will save a lot of headaches
Al, when you order parts for a vehicle, use the VIN. The Vehicle Identification Number.
👍🏻 Well done Al! Your breadth of knowledge in repairing anything never ceases to amaze me.
Yup.. it kind of blows my mind actually. 😅😊
Al , that sticker on the windshield cannot be accurate. You need to find the original Data plate. With manufacture dates etc. when finding parts.
Came here to say this! That sticker is from the auction or importer. I’m betting the year on that sticker is off.
Hey Al, safety first. Don't work on fuel components while charging the battery.
Your excitement was so much fun to watch!! I don’t know a lot about mechanics, but I do know about excitement! So glad it’s running! Get in there Gina! Everybody needs to learn to drive a stick! Teach Olivia while you’re at it Al! 😁
Yes I agree about Olivia... the sooner she learns the better
Al..... I have been fixing Old Farm stuff for 60 years plus I can tell you that the first problem you have is that the timing is so retarded the thing wasn't doesn't want to start and until you fix the timing by advancing it doesn't matter how much gas or spark or anything else you get it what's the time in adjusted Advanced perhaps 10 to 15° and that should give you a reasonable shot at it I'm not so sure anything else is wrong except it probably needs some new gas
@@jerdoggie5862 I was wondering if the timing was right,. You just rotate the distributor cap right? Very slowly.
Yeah, I was expecting Oliva to be running the farm equipment by now.
@@StoneKathryn - Right you are, Kathryn! Loosen the hold-down bolt/clamp nut and rotate the proper direction - a timing light helps along with the tune-up specifications which will tell us the correct timing as per the hopeful marks on the crank pulley...
One of my earliest Memories was my Grandpa working on a car, I snuck out the kitchen door to see what he was doing (visiting the grandparents) He looks down at me, then gently picks me up and sets me on the bumper and says "Now, Elizabeth, This is a Carburator." I was maybe tops three? probably smaller. Brought back a great old memory. Thanks!
Any memory that includes learning from an older family member is a really happy memory. 🥰
Good morning from the UK
Run Sea Foam through it as well to clean the engine. I have had good luck with it.
Hey Al……if you can’t get that mini truck running good……you might want to contact Derek from Vice Grip Garage to help you…..he’s a TH-camr like you and gets old vehicles running again……he is pretty good at it……also contact Holley, they may have sniper kit to convert to EFI……also with a Carb when flooded do not pump the gas, just hold to the floor to start but do not pump it!!!
Mustie1 has had a couple of these, I'm going to watch some of his vids after watching this, starting with: Can It Be Saved, Thrashed 1992 Daihatsu Hijet, This Thing Needs Love. Thanks Al 👍
Al, you are golden!! It is such a pleasure to see your good nature as you work through complicated mechanical issues. I have seen others turn the air blue and cuss up a storm. Good for you.
As a 75 year old that has had his share of hard start problems one thing I noticed was that it appears that automatic was fully closed. This seems to be to much choke in the summer and would cause problems on restarting a hot engine and adjusting mixture if choke is not opening all the way. Glad you got it running.
A float that was sticking hence flooding and Al heavy footed on accelerator. Air to fuel mix not set properly but you cracked it in the end kudos man well done I am excited for you. Your little white pony is working better that ever. ☘☘☘☘☘☘☘Someone is going to be happy yes Gina?
Al, awesome that you got the truck working. Great thinking outside the box and fixing things.
It's Al's Super Power. 😅
The oil filler cap was right there on the valve cover when you were looking for the dip stick.
That is a PULSE Pump. Replace the hose ( pulse from the engine crank case to the pump every year. The ethenol in the fuel degrades the inside of the rubber hose and impedes the pulse to the pump ). I have to do this on my zero turn lawn mower every year and avoid problems with my mower ! ! !
Al, I think what you need next is a rock crusher. It would let you crush some of the rocks around your property and get gravel for road repairs. Next time you take anything apart, like wiring or hoses, take picture of it first.
When you build your work bench, to the right or left build bench so you can sit down and work on things like rebuilding carbs etc. George Phoenix AZ🌵
WOW 41 minutes! Like the old times. Conversion to 4x4, lift, front and back LED lights, snorkel, fan, wench, AC, suspension, seat covers, sand blast the rust off the bed and spray bed liner.
Patience of Job! Next set of triplet critters should be called Knock, ping and run-on! lol
Good morning Al and Gina. A 41 minute video. I absolutely LOVE it!
Gooooooooood Morning Darrin good to know.
I love long videos also!
Me too! From a South African in Cambodia.
@@LumnahAcreslove the long video!! What a treat!😁
If that gets to the point it gets running this will be cool on your farm with a dump truck. Cool truck❤😊
Al, Never use gasket maker/sealant in place of a carb gasket. If old gasket tears or comes apart, use some gasket paper. cut a square out closer to the size, lay it on carb mount area and use a small hammer and tap around it, making a form of the gasket and then cut it out. For a small carb like that, a lot of times you can find something like a thermostat housing gasket that will work. Using the gasket maker the stuff on the inside will come apart and clog stuff up. Also, pump it twice when trying to crank it, and then hold it to the floor, that will set your choke. When you continuously pump the throttle, that will flood it. Key off keeps "running" idle is too high. and most likely running rich(too much fuel in). For just around the farm, a lot of folks use ATV tires and wheels. If it doesn't have posi in the rear, you can always do a Lincoln locker(weld the spider gears) which will make both tires pull instead of just one.
Growing up on a farm, in the 1950’s & 60’s, we would cut gaskets from such things as cereal or cracker boxes. Works like a champ
@@AAdams-nd1pj - One time I had a Vespa scooter that the clutch was slipping and I couldn't machine the bushing to reduce pressure on the throw-out bearing... instead I was able to make a gasket out of shirt cardboard to increase the clearance just enough to make the clutch stop slipping. Now my old-time friends from back in the day always like to tease me about the "cardboard clutch"! 😜
OK I'll say it. You have to put together a video of your [ while I'm working songs ] . Those are just too funny.🤣🤣
Brutus is such a beautiful dog, how do you not stop and pet him all day he’s such a big lover.
That he is Jim, but we must remember Brutus is a WORKING DOG first, PET second !!
@@davidgetchell3633 Brutus doesn't do much work... he just wanders around.
@@Anthony-J-M - His probation period should be up shortly to allow him full farm access at all times, I'm thinking!
Speaking of cereal, can’t count the number of times my dad sent me into the house to get a cereal box, pencil, and exacto knife to make a “new” gasket for a repair.
Congrats on getting your 1988 Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck running fine again ! Al, You are one hell of a Mechanic !
Good morning from Windsor On🇨🇦 Al your experience in fixing things is amazing!!! Hey 👋 Gina & Olivia and Brutus & fur babies
Brutus is living the life !
This is the most entertained I have been in a long time. Al, You are such a happy warrior. Not sure what was off camera, but I would have been throwing wenches, cursing and walking away on several occasions. Great job!
Granted that all that rain is a challenge.. but WOW is your work shop & cozy barn such a blessing.
That you got all that done when you did is a total blessing.
It makes my morning to see you so excited. Gina is super smart. She will pick up manual driving with ease. 2 videos without her, is she ok. She was so sick, I worry
Fantastic job with the truck. It's cute little truck. Teach Gina to drive safely 🙏 🙌. It's easy on you, no traffic road.

Al you truly were like a kid in a candy store! Blessed my heart to hear the sheer joy in your heart while working on this project! Thank you 😊 Peace and blessings 🤗😃😁
The little work truck could be a great hauler for Gina and the secret garden..😂 Love ya'll ❤️
It is a Martha Stewart good thing that you still have rainy day indoor projects to accompany your sunny day outdoor projects.
Good morning, happy Thursday. Al, all that hard work paid off!
Good morning Al. When it keeps running after the key is out. It's called dieseling. It burns all the fuel out of the carburetor, making it hard to start. If it does that, just pop the clutch choking it down. I do believe you have it adjusted right now. 😊👍🏾
Isn't dieseling caused by wrong spark plugs and/or carbon in the cylinder head? Also timing could be out.
@@manolisgledsodakis873 95% of the time that dieseling is cause by the idle RPM being too high. IOW, he's fooling with the wrong adjustments because there's still something not right in the idle section of that carb.
Al one thing you need to put on is a Reece hitch front and back and also a wench. To pull yourself out when you get stuck. Great job!!!!!!
My husband worked in construction for more than 40 years, & he has seen the cylinder that pushes the bed up cause 3 people to die, because it dropped down on them while they were working on their truck. It killed them, so please make sure it is braced so it will not fall on you while you’re working on the dump truck. We don’t want anything to harm you in any way! Hope you get your road fixed soon. Have a good weekend!
Good reminder - my youngest brother was killed by a dumptruck bed falling on him when the hydraulics failed - he was only 40yo. Please always use a block.
This kind of mini trucks is what my 35 yr old daughter wreck and died this year May 12, on Mother's Day. So please Al be careful and safe....
The truck comes with a blocking brace for the bed( goes near the rear of the bed). You can see Al put the brace down at 30:31 in the video! But, 3 minutes later when he's playing with the vacuum lines, he neglects to put the brace up again( you can see it laying just inside the frame). Gotta be consistent to be safe, Al!
Yes please use a 2 × 4 to prop the dump
You are so funny working on that thing.. yea I love car projects… that thing is a thing of beauty
I watch you while waiting for my cereal to get soggy (well, Tuesdays and Thursdays anyway).
Brutus is stealing the gloves, looks like! 😂 Ha!
I wouldn't get too far from home!! An old Jeep would be really cool to have for that size property. I taught my wife how to drive a stick with my 77 Jeep and we had a ball, jerking down the road laughing!
May the lord bless and protect you and Gina
I did not know that car repair could be so entertaining! You have made me laugh as I learned a little bit. Thanks for a great start to my day. Now, let's get Gina driving that thing. She will love it!!!
It was Al’s sense of humor and comical expressions that made fixing his truck SO entertaining! Love Al!
If you’re still looking for a car lift I would recommend a truck lift and or an equipment lift. You do have the beginning of farm equipment that’s going to be heavier than a car lift. Then decide on a 4 post or 2 post.
Check out the timing on the truck.
A very good morning from Gatwick wishing everyone a great day 🎉
Gooooooooood Morning Gatwick
Good morning, Jim - thank you and wishing you the same!
Good morning/day!
Al??????????????? Your saw horse work bench upgrade, with a vise, and drawers could be your next BIG episode!!! You must watch "Taryl fixes all" a billion times. Great success on your part for you fortitude, and hands on. That's it on my comment. Bless you both.
I really enjoy watching men work. Watching you try to muscle that truck in the garage is such a classic guy thing to do :) All the men (but one) in my life have been mechanical and were always working on cars. My cousin taught me how to work on cars when I was 15, long before everything got computerized. I was the only girl I knew, at that time, that even wanted to know these things. My first vehicle was a '50 Ford pickup that had been sitting in a field for many years. The guy I got it from said, "If you can get it running, you can have it." I did and drove that old truck all over Nevada for years. Good Job Al!!!
Sweet! Frankenstein is working 😊
Hey Al your timing is out! When the motor runs on after the key is off it's because the timing is too advanced, causing the motor to get extra hot the fuel to vaporise and ignite on the hot spark plugs. Check timing at distributer or try running with vacuum hose of distributer
The vacuum hose to distributer should come from inlet manifold so it only advances distributer when suction is highest from higher rpm
I agree! I had a car that had the same problem. Timiming set all well again.
let's not over-think this. We can all hear that engine idling at 2,000 rpm, which will cause the after-run.
It’s awesome how you guys are so generous with your knowledge and being helpful. The free help that’s available on the internet today is amazing.
The litle truck need a led light bar and led head lights and tail lights. Maybe a radio to listen to ACDC while doing farm work 😊.
Al I’m so happy for you. You’ve sure had battles with that little truck but it looks like you have prevailed. Your excitement bubbled over and I got all excited. Cool video 👍❤️
16:17 -- what did Brutus steal?? Tissue? Napkin? Paper towel?
Very cute truck!

Brutus needs a buddy.
That's why you should take pictures or video of the item you're going to disassemble BEFORE you take it apart. That way you can put it back together the same way.
That is good unless someone before put it together wrong !!
Another thing to do is to use tape and a marker and write on the tape what everything is and which end goes where, or label with numbers and write in a notebook or tablet what each number is and where it goes, this way you won't forget. Yes it might take longer to complete a repair doing it this way.
Al Gina I am home from the Hospital Been home for 2 days Feeling much Better Now I hope you are doing good I am going to go for now. Bobbie Hall.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Fantastic long video.
Woo Al, take a picture of what you put in. Put the photo into computer with notes. 👌👌👌
Speaking of taking pictures, it's also a good idea to take a picture of what it is you're working on before you work on it, so you know where everything goes before you touched it. Before the advent of digital cameras and cellphones, I would make a sketch of any important details to help with the reassembly of stuff as I knew I couldn't trust myself to remember the little nitty gritty!
Good morning Al, Gina and all Lumnah family and friends. Good job on the Mini Truck, may it keep running as it should. Brutus is happy as the farm dog, he was a good pick of the litter. I know this video is about a week behind but saw Ken's video of the NEW flooding they had over his way, hope you all faired OK !!

Hi al gina this video was great better at 40 minutes really enjoyable and great to see the truck start and stop then start again al face was amazing the faces he pulled he was over the moon he finally got the tfuck to work
Congrats on getting the truck going. It's worth keeping in mind an engine rebuild to improve all the systems.
Awesome job ‼️ Knew ya could do it 👏👍👊
It called dieseling. Usually caused by carbon build up or overheating . Maybe wrong plugs getting to hot. Dieseling
Usually it’s because the engine timing is off

I was blessded with a husband like Al. IF HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW HE READ AND STUDIED THEN DID IT
Al, it looks like you should take that truck out to Gina’s garden, fill the bed with dirt and let her grow some crops in it. 😊
LOL I was thinking the same and that it will end up being that at their front gate to advertise Lumnah Acres.
When you are attempting to start a carbureted engine Instead of pumping it five or six times you should push the accelerator to the floor and hold it there for the count of four, If you think about what is happening the accelerator pump is spring loaded and it takes that long to push the fuel into the throat and if you happen to flood the carb just hold it down while cranking the engine and dump the fuel. I was taught to pump the car a few times also but later I took classes at a community college and learned the correct way to do it. try it you will be surprised.
We've gotten spoiled with the fuel-injected cars - don't have to press the gas at all, only in case there's a problem!
Al,congratulations on getting the little truck back running again who needs a mechanic when you have a Al 😮😊❤
Al, when are you going to,put the light switch plates on, in your shop? When will you take the paper off the door windows of the shop?
