- This tutorial I'll show you how to sew a sofa slipcover step by step. This is by far the simplest style sofa to slipcover because it has a tight back(no back cushions), and only one single seat cushion. So if you have a sofa this style you can easily make a slipcover. If you are a beginner sewist I'd recommend using an affordable fabric for you first slipcover or even a drop cloth from the hardware store.

This is an excellent tutorial and just what I needed. It’s almost impossible to find people that make slipcovers! I think I can tackle it after seeing your video.
Thank you Dee! Yes you can definitely tackle a slipcover, I seems daunting but it’s pretty simple. Just use lots of pins and take your time.
Do you have any information how to determine how much fabric would be needed? Right now I’m just using drop cloths. But in the future I would love to know. Thank you !

As I was watching this, I was thinking how the heck is that possibly going to come together. It was like magic, amazing! I just bought a house and ended up buying a sofa from Goodwill, a really well-made sofa, but man is it ugly! I threw a couple of sheets on it, but now I'm inspired to try some beginner sewing projects with the hope of working my way up to this. Thank you so much for making this video!
You’re welcome Monica!!! You can do it! Home decor sewing is the easiest in my opinion. Long straight stitching, nothing too fussy like clothes. It can be bulky, but it’s pretty simple.

You’re welcome Julie. If you can sew you can make a slipcover. It’s a lot of straight long seams. Just be patient with yourself the first time around. And maybe do a chair first.

Thank you for making it clear that you were doing the layout inside out. When you were showing the welting on the arm I kept thinking it was inside out. Then you clarified. I guess the only question I have is how do you figure how much fabric is needed. I end up buying enough fabric to cover a sofa a chair and then make drapes, or enough to cover half a sofa. I don't know if there is a formula to figure the fabric needed for to cover a sofa. I love how you make the instructions clear.
There isn't a formula per se for figuring fabric for a sofa. I just usually measure my sofa in 1 yard by 54"(width of the fabric) increments, and a cushion with welt is about a yard each. I also have an upholstery yardage calculator on my website and it's pretty accurate, but I generally buy a yard extra. My mom always said it's better to have a yard too much than be an inch too short.

Excellent Job....love the two tones slipcover, I never done a slipcover, I am looking into making my own slipcover in white, since I am not a sewer, will do a total cover without the cushions, sofa is 1 year old, I just want a cover for protection, mine will not look as perfect as yours, but I will try. you're welcome. it just takes a little patience. if you've never made a slipcover consider starting with a drop cloth for fabric or a very reasonably priced fabric. the cushions really help to hold the slipcover in place and make it look good. I have a cushion making video. Good Luck!

I have a sofa with rounded arms and rounded back. I’m guessing it would be advisable to add a closure on each side of the back to make it easier to put on. Learning so much from your tutorials. Thank you
You most likely only need to put a closure on one side. Unless you like installing zippers or velcro.🤣 Thank you for commenting.

What type fabric did you use? Also what fabric would you recommend for a house with dogs? So Hardy but easy to clean?
I used a linen blend. I'd use something that washes well. I've used a few of the canvas fabrics from bigduckcanvas.com with really great results.
What stitch would you use to reinforce the seam end material so it doesn’t ravel and would you see the two bound sems together or separately and then iron open
The best thing to do is serge the edges...but if you don't have a serger then zig zag over the edges. I usually bind the raw edges together to save time and then press to one side. Good question. When first started slipcovering I never bound the raw edges and every time I washed my covers I had to cut a lot of knotted up threads, but the slipcovers still work fine if you don't bind the edges.

Well this fabric came from a closeout store in my area called Boca Bargoons. It closed recently. I usually use a medium to heavy weight linen blend or canvas. Big Duck Canvas.com has good selection and reasonable prices.

Love your videos and plan to sew a slipcover for my sofa after getting an reupholstery quote (Wow!). What type needle and thread did you use?
i usually use upholstery weight thread and a 90/14 or denim needle.

Can I add a zipper up the middle back? I need a closure and my back side seam isn’t straight. I’m not worried about that area showing.
Absolutley! If your sofa is against a wall or has something behind it, put the zipper where ever is easiest.

What size & type of pins do you recommend, for pinning fabric to sofa & pinning the fabric pieces to each other?
I like using 1.5” ball head pins. Longer pins are better and the ball head is easier on the fingers. But they do make it harder to sew over pins.

I believe it was about 14 yards including welt. The tight back(no back cushions) and no skirt, make this style the easiest to do, and the least amount of fabric.

Hi. The fabric is made by revolution fabrics , it’s called sugar shack in color way glacier. Is has no stretch. It a performance fabric.

How do you estimate the fabric required for the sofa or arm chair?
at this point i can just look at a piece and estimate the yardage required. But you can use a yardage calculator picture or measure and write down the measurements on a yardage calculator sheet. My question is about the pretty FLOOR...linoleum? Also where are you? I have a Boca Bargoons near me in Florida...are you close?
I stenciled the floor in m workroom years ago. It was a dirty beige and gold flecked linoleum. I'm in Tampa. Where are you? My Boca turned into a close-out store and then it closed all together....bummer.

This couch takes the least because there’s no back cushions and no skirt. It took about 15 yards.
