How to Slipcover a Wingback Chair

  • Watch my step by step tutorial for creating a wingback chair slipcover using drop cloth. Follow the same steps to make a slipcover for a chair of any size, a couch, or a love seat.

The drop cloth I use can be found here: amzn.to/2fz8vkl
UPDATE MUST READ: I have heard from several readers that the brand of drop cloth you buy makes all the difference. I did not know this, since I have only ever used this brand from Amazon (linked above). Other brands turns gray and off white.
UPDATE PART TWO: Thanks to Lori, a lovely reader of my blog, I now know why some other brands won't turn white. The drop cloths I recommend from Amazon are 100% cotton, so bleachable. Some brands are made with 50% polyester, so unbleachable. I knew people were having trouble with other brands, but now I actually know why!

Lovely job. I learned an alternate way of joining the ends of piping other than the overlap method. Sew on the piping to within 3" of where it will meet. Leave enough of the fabric strip so you can turn back a hem at the ends. Butt the cording together precisely. Turn back 3/4" on one end of the fabric strip, making sure it extends beyond the place where the cording butts together. Overlap the other end and turn back about half an inch. Finish attaching the piping to the piece. It takes a bit longer, but gives a professional look, especially handsome on pillows where people will see the joint.

My mom (who was a seamstress) slip-covered our sofa. My M-I-L (also a seamstress) reupholstered the seats of my husband's truck. I'm just not that ambitious. You amaze me, Lisa. You do it all. You remind me of my sister.

I learned to do this watching my parents as a child (pre TV) and did it when first married at 20yrs old. My daughter has done the same, soon it will be the grandchildren saving furniture from the landfill. A very useful skill to learn.

I always wanted to do this. I knew the basic technique but I faced covering a large couch and a loveseat. Too much work! But after finding your video I was inspired to make them. I bleached dropcloths outside in large tubs and it took me several tries because I started with house brand bleach. Clorox is best. I dried them on the line and let the sun do its magic. For the piping I purchased rope (clothesline) from Tractor Supply...cheap $$ for 100 feet. The slipcovers look amazing and my ratty, kid-worn, dog-pulled furniture is nicely hidden and has the beachy feel I desired. Thanks!!

I enjoy watching your videos! I love to sew, so I wanted to check out how you accomplished this one. I would have done it similarly, but there are two things that would have made it just a bit easier for me. Have you heard of fabric markers? The ink washes out of the fabric, or disappears over time. I would have pinned the fabric directly to the chair to keep it from continually shifting, and would have probably used a fabric marker to "connect the dots" created by the pins. Another thought is I might have used my fabric marker to trace the chair seams onto the fabric, then added extra around the markings for the seams. It is encouraging to see you get things done, however you decide to do it!

Stumbled upon your channel and was watching your farmhouse finds at thrift stores but I couldn't help but fall in love with your slipcover from the intro, with that sweet ruffle. Then I looked online to buy it and couldn't find anything comparable. Lisa, great video, as usual! I know you've already sewn a slipcover for your couch, prior to THIS wingback chair video. Perhaps you could sew another couch slip cover (perhaps a Christmas red ticking slipcover?) and do a video on how to tackle slip-covering a couch. I have a great couch purchased at Salvation Arm (for $35.00!) That I'd like to slipcover - a video would be great! Thank you for sharing your projects and simple farmhouse style. ~Sophia

WOW I am so impressed with your slipcover video. You make it look so easy. I am going to have to modify some as I am going to try to do one for my old recliner. Fortunately is does not have piping. or a separate cushion. Thinking I will run the front leg lift part with a slip in section to just tuck the bottom edge into. I keep telling myself it can not look any worse than it already does now. NOW to get a drop cloth from HF and go from there. Very excited about this. I painted the fabric on my love seat and matching recliner but when they start to look bad I will also try this slip cover trick of yours. So appreciate your time and ability to not only do this but to create a lovely tutorial out of it.

I worked on this today using an old chenille bedspread. It is worn out and my thoughts were to mostly create a pattern. No piping on my recliner which makes things easier. I got it covered making what I had fit and then used a matching rug I wove many years ago as the slip in seat cover I am pleased and will now be buying the painters tarp and see if I can re-create what I did with the spread. Thanks again because I used many of your tips here even though I was doing a different kind of chair.

Consider making use of the crevices in a piece of furniture when designing a slipcover. For covering an upholstered waterbed, I cut sections of 1/2 pvc pipe to insert into rod pockets at certain points. The piped pockets are then wedged into the crevices to hold fabric even and snug. Remove the pipe for laundering the cover. I sewed separate covers for the headboard, footboard, and siderails and overlapped fabric so there would be no gaps where the covers met. The same concept can be used to wrap fabric around the bottom edge of furniture. But instead of using round pipe, something thin and flat like wood lath could work better. There are a variety of notions to temporarily attach the lath pocket to the inside or underside of the bottom frame, velcro, a wood screw inserted through a buttonhole, grommets, binder clips, "L" hooks etc.

I have always wanted to do this but did not really know how. My grandmother passed away many years ago and I was given her signal chair. The chair is all n perfect condition , but it is orange! My living room is burgundy, with some good and black. So, the chair is in storage. But, no more. I will get some drop cloth, bleach it and try this. I will either the it or just incorporate whit into my color scheme instead of the black accents. I will make it work as I want my grandmother's chair in my home. Thank you ever so much for your videos.
