Could be any number of things surrounding the starter motor from it being goosed to a grounding/ wiring fault a multimeter would be your best friend in this situation.
It should say buy a better car.. I owned a 124 in the old days and will never ever buy another Fiat.. Trans went south and then the engine let go in Death Valley..
Why didn't you do an update and tell us as I read below, that the starter was jammed and ahow what you did and discuss this? First and last visit here.
i know it is 2years later but for new readers ,same problem ,head gasket had gone ,with caused water in piston chambers ,thus making it sound like battery flat.
i had the same problem wen i drove car for a while the stopped to put gas in wudnt start.jst turn over nothing.in the end concluded was starter motor on the way out so bought new one and no probs at all now....
Mate i’ve got same problem with mine, checked under the seat where battery is located and saw all wired and boxes next to battery were rusted. On dry days when you turn the ignition ON the lights come on on dashboard after few tries they go off and makes this cranking noise, when it rains turning the key does nothing, I’ve cleaned the rust on cables and boxes where battery is located sealed it off but still heaving problems with starting it.. Any idea what i shld do next? Had Electritian come n have a look at it, he is telling me starter motor or altenator gone, don’t fancy replacing them both and not knowing 100% the fault is with them.. Let me know if you had same problem and if you know what to do next.. thanks
I'm having a problem with mine firstly it had a long crank before it starts the thot it was the battery then i bought a new one drove it only for a day then it starts having long cranks again , and changed the petrol filter, drove it once again then i called an auto to come check it out , we replaced the camshaft , crankshaft sensor then took it for a test drive , during the course of the test drive it was it looses power each time you ingage to high gear going up hill then you had to ingage to lower gears .i then tried it 30 min after the auto had left it wouldn't start till now it cranks but wont.pliz

why don't you go under engine >> data stream>> starter relay

My one cranks won't fire without easy start...have just bought a 2nd running one,going to swap parts until it works...stay tuned!

This could be mechanical fault with starter motor , try to knock on the starter while you turning ignition to start engine position

tighten all connections....
My van was running the a light came up to say stop engine pulled over stoped the the van won’t start again
Look for corrosion on the starter wires or battery terminals. (green or white crusty powder)

Mine was running fine untill starter went bad. Replacement starter cranks engine but it won't start no idea what the issue is.
