Same. I have a special hate in my heart for bolt actions as a left handed shooter, but savage is very considerate and this rifle keeps with that in this rifle.

This rifle has lots of impressive features: all the usually impressive Savage features - Accutrigger, stock, LOP, etc. and some great new ones, like the main one being the straight-pull bolt which can be set up as RH or LH. As for the easy bolt release - it's about time Savage caught up to almost every other rifle manufacturer with this feature. My only criticism is the weight of this rifle. At over eight pounds, it may be fine for varmints, but chasing big game with a rig that will come in around ten pounds with scope seems a little on the high side, at least to me.

At 0:18 he says, "with the speed and cycling capabilities of an MSR". Personally, I doubt that, but I do think this a good idea. The rifle is too heavy at 8.5 lbs. If they could get the weight to 7.5 lbs. and chamber it in smaller cartridges (.223 or 6.5 Grendel), I think this will sell very well.

Heym made a straight pull that uses ball bearings as well. Anschutz also made a toggle lock 22lr with ball bearings as locking lugs. It is cool to see a modern take on it though.

Yes, but not as bad as it sounds. The bolt locks in to a steel barrel extension, so the receiver only has to guide the bolt home and does not see any pressure. Much like the AR 6 lug bolt.

That's nice but I seem to recall seeing that bolt design in a German gun from the 1950's! It saw it for the first time in a youtube video created by this guy's channel th-cam.com/channels/61DCbnEtWbViNLOgfN2E5Q.html. He actually presented a cutaway view of the bolt and showed those ball bearings that lock it in place. I tried to go back and find it from his catalog but he's got so many videos I just couldn't locate it.

Why do you say that many straight pull rifles are not designed for magnum calibers? All leading companies that have developed and produce straight pull rifles, from Blaser, Merkel, Heym to Browning offer their weapons in magnum calibers. Blaser, whose R93 has been on the market for 28 years, builds its R8s to the thickest calibers on request. So please, stick to the facts when advertising a product. Personally, I prefer rifles from Sauer and Sohn and carry a Merkel RX Helix for driven hunts.

Straight pull rifles are not significantly quicker than turnbolts. This is a rippoff of the Heym system. I've shot K31's and M95's. They are not a bit quicker if you have to reacquire the target between shots. Only the Swiss with their apparently racial love of complexity fielded a straight pull after the Great War. And they replaced it with an autoloader despite never having to use it in combat. This is akin to fishing lures that are designed to catch fishermen rather than fish.

@@caintfindme4735 the mechanism isnt new. Its tried and true. Roller-delayed guns also use a similar locking concept (with rollers instead of bearings, obviously) and they have been used in rifles and machine guns for decades. Once the rollers, or in this case bearings, ever do wear out, the gun wont lock into battery, hence it wont fire. Again tho, we’re talking several thousands and thousands of rounds.
