I'm a believer in the idea that
Helter Skelter was the first heavy metal song.

Personally, after watching all these how's it done vids I am convinced that with the tapes constantly rolling between takes even, George Martin captured the F add 9, the bass D AND a D chord variation by accident.

I am a big fan of the Beatles... The first time I heard the Beatles songs, I thought they were just what we call "three chord songs". But the more I hear the more difficult and complexed the chords and the way they played... The lads are genuinly fabalous...Thanks Mike you have opened my ears so clearly....

Mike's Tutorial is masterful. ~because he loves the music as we all do. You're certainly aware of Galleazzo Frudua. ~another Italian Beatles fan, but his specialty are the VOCALS. He nails `em just as YOU do the guitar parts. And you both seem to enjoy my favorite Beatles tunes. You're awesome.

Beautiful job, Mike. I especially liked the explanation of George's lead 'masquerading as triplets', but were actually 1/16 notes. I listened and, By Golly, you are right! Delightful epiphany there. Also, I very much liked your commentary near the end, before playing it through, where you talked about their confidence and exuberance which can be seen in the movie. Indeed...it can be seen and felt! Great job...you have inspired me to learn again even when I'm 64 (no, really...I am !).

“Tomorrow Never Knows” is one of my favourites. What is his best? (Or, will we ever know?🤩). Sir Macca says he does not believe he knows a hit anymore . He “just writes the songs, and [he] can’t tell if it’s good or great...” Does Ringo even notice how cool his vernacular is, or is he a musical Yogi Berra?

I am so happy that I was old enough to hear and appreciate these songs as they were played on the radio for the first time. Since the Beatles put out so much music, none of us had to wait very long to hear the next brilliant new song. No band set the bar this high in innovative music at the time. I can't begin to tell anyone the overwhelming feeling these songs had on all of us when they were fresh and new. Beatle mania is an experience i have never felt since that time. Unbelievable!

The first day I was in Vietnam 17 Jan. 1968 I heard this tune blasting out of a music shop in Nha Trang, the irony of The Beatles in an atmosphere of total cultural otherness was arresting and comforting.

WOW, I didn't know that so much thought went into an almost inconsequential thing as the opening chord of one of the most famous Beatles song, which we all take for granted or don't even notice.
John, George Harrison, Paul and, in his own right as the Beatles' producer, George Martin, were ABSOLUTE GENIUSES who remain UNPARALLELED in the entire history of music.

This is fantastic! I actually learned to play guitar back in the early 70's from The Compleat Beatles (yes, spelled that way) songbook. I play George's part using a Rickenbacker 360/12 which really gives it a full tone and use my Casino for John's part. Your videos are fantastic and I've learned a lot in filling in the small nuances and alternate chording. My older brother, who plays bass, and I used to jam all night playing Beatles songs. Great stuff!

Excellent explanation and bang on from what my ears tell me--I puzzled over that opening chord and never got it--now I know why! Two Thumbs up Mike--thanks!

Mike, Awesome job. I now listen completely differently. Having been on the road most of my life or playing local, I didn't have the time nor the ear to pull these songs apart. Thanks and job well done

I fell into the TH-cam vortex and this video showed up in the suggestions on the right side of the screen. Always loved AHDN, so I eagerly checked it out. Excellent, informative explanation of the opening chord, and how to come up with a very reasonable facsimile for playing live! It's so cool when different instruments and finger positions can supply bits & pieces of a 'sound' that combine for what can only be described as 'The total is greater than the sum of the parts!'
I also enjoyed your comments about the chords that John & George played, as well as a demonstration of suggested rhythms for strumming them. Makes for a pretty faithful rendition, even with the omission of of a 12-string. Wonderful job!
I was pleased to see that you also tackled the solo. The 'tricky part' is one that I've long been fascinated with. I play guitar - sorta - and have had a stab or two at this solo, but never really plunged into it, mainly because my ears have always deceived me when I try to break it down. Your explanation - '16th notes masquerading as triplets' - sums it up very nicely! I don't know if that's a precise, technical certainty, but it's better than I would've come up with, had I tried to explain it to someone. All I can say is, whenever I've tried to play it, it comes out sounding like triplets, no matter how hard I try to avoid that. And that's also what I hear when you demonstrate how you play it. You count it out plausibly, but it still comes out sounding like triplets (to me) when I hear you play it.
I thought that it may sound closer in context, when played against the backing track - maybe another instrument or percussive element might supply a stray beat that makes me hear it the way it sounds on the original recording. Alas, it's just not there for me. It sounds a little bit 'short', for lack of a better term. The first time more so than the 2nd. But it's very, very close, and I'll try to get there, myself, one of these days.
There's a similar situation in another one of my favorite 60's songs -- Time Won't Let Me, by The Outsiders. Al Austin's brief solo features a section that guitarists covering the tune almost always play as triplets when covering it. But I hear something different, and after a long study, came up with something that sounds more like what was actually played. I exchanged messages with Bill Bruno, who toured with The Outsiders in the 60s, and he told me how he played it. Then I heard a version that he put together, himself, and it didn't sound right. Maybe there something wrong with my ears, LOL!
Sorry to be so wordy, but I love talking about this stuff with other guitar players. You've done a marvelous job on this song. I've subscribed to your channel and will be checking out some more of your work very soon.

Hey Mike. Absolutely amazing. Your understanding of their music is really something. On the surface and to the unenlightened ear (as ours were back in those days) the songs appeared simple. How wrong we were! I used to notice their chords looked different and now I know why. Thanks for all the incredible effort you put into this. These lesson are mind-expanding!
