    My favorite thing about your videos is when you play a riff you've obviously played a thousand times before, yet you still laugh out loud at how ridiculously cool it is. Perfectly encapsulates the magic of that band.

    I guess many of us could debate how great a musician Paul was in the 60's but I'd have to say he was one of the greatest in everything he did from singing, to his awesome bass playing, to his songwriting and guitar work. He also kept the Beatles together cranking out hits long after they were all millionaires and would have been just as happy to have called it quits. He was the most dedicated to the Beatles and always seemed to be enjoying the music the most when they performed.

    Fantastic study, Mike! The whole series has been a joy and I was pleased to see one for McCartney's guitar work as well. I've actually always wondered who wrote and played that descending guitar melody in Back To The USSR (during the chorus). To me, sometimes Paul's and George's styles overlap and I'm unsure who is doing what and who possibly came up with what. I love it all, no matter who it came from, but I find myself curious about it. Anyway, I really love what you've presented, from a shared love of their genius work, as well as due to your talent and insight in delving into these pieces. Thank you!

    You just popped up on my side screen. Had no idea what you were going to be doing in respect to the Beatles. The first that struck me was your enthusiasm and heartfelt joy, in playing Paul's solos. That is possibly the most important thing, in respect to music. PASSION ! You have it in spades ,everything else is academic.
    I live in SF, but have recorded several sessions in Nashville. I'll never forget the first time. I had foolishly thought the session players would be three or four chord players etc. I only knew Nashville from country stereotyping. So, we go in the studio on my first visit ( Fireside , now long gone ) . I write with a lot of chord changes and inversions have to correct. So the musical director writes out a Nashville chart for the others . ( You'll have to explain to everyone someday )
    So before the session to loosen up with the other players, I asked them, what can we play that we might all know.
    I suggested a Beatles tune, which I know all the parts to,never thinking these guys would either appreciate or know any of the songs .
    I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG !
    " OK, which one "?
    Come again ...
    It was a blast. We must have run through six tunes in half an hour . All in the right keys,all knew the right changes and drummer knew all Rings fills etc.
    I applaud you.
    It's infectious.
    You get it.
    You feel it.
    Kudos my friend .
    You're doing a great service for young players , that may have not been aware of how great and inspired this band was.
    " Blackbird " I get where Paul is coming from.
    Inspiration, but not necessarily stealing :)
    I too have met him,and have spent quite a bit of time with him years ago.
    The most humble person I've ever met.
    When I hear Beyoncé or any of the other young poseurs saying how great they ( about themselves ) it's a joke. Sorry ,you don't write,produce,score,sing your own harmonies,play an instrument etc.
    Keep it up Mike.
    It was a joy watching you ,and your licks were spot on.

    They where art students,,, how the hell did they get to be such great musicians in such a short time with no training ? It always baffled me, they played like they been playing for decades, with complete ease. I often think they where like angels, sent by God himself, to bring this music to the world. Nobody,,, nobody gets to the level of playing an instrument as well as they all did, in such a short time, and at such a young age ! Its a mystery too me,,,,,

    Paul plays the lead in George Harrison's "Taxman" . It's the 1st trac from Revolver and he shreds on this ..A guitar solo ahead of its time ...Also on another Harrison trac "Think For Yourself " Paul plays a smoking bass line on a Fuzz bass that really makes the trac..The facts are , Paul McCartney is the musical genius of our time and adding Lennon/ Harrison to the mix itwas beyond magical .. It is absolutely mind blowing the amount amazing, ingenious and quality music that the Beatles created and recorded during the time they were together ..In just 8 years they released 12 albums ...one being a double (White album) and wrote and recorded 409 tracs a small handful of covers mostly sung by Ringo.Also starred in 2 movies Hard Days Night and Help ...Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour short films A cartoon series 2or 3 huge world tours the let it b documentary Many television appearances ALL IN 8 YEARS!! Some artists today release only 1 or 2 pathetic CD's in that time

    Fantastic rundown of Paul's work and to think of the staggering volume of material produced in only 6-7 years! According to Ian Macdonald's book Revolution in the Head, McCartney wrote "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" on the same day. (Geeesh, some hope for two hits like that in a life time!!)
    Here is a quote of beloved John..... when Paul performed a beautiful solo version of Yesterday, John came back on stage afterward and said, “Thank you Ringo. That was wonderful.”

      I attended a wedding in a cornfield in Iowa, just up the road from my uncle's farm, when I was only a little shaver, circa '69(?) Where the groom (who was just back from his tour in Nam), knelt down on one knee with a cheap acoustic guitar and sang this song to his soon to be bride. I remember she sobbed like a baby. Even at only 9 years of age thought it was the coolest thing ever.

    • @Dogheadj
      @Dogheadj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I agree that Paul was probably the best musician in The Beatles, I believe it was Paul's ego and and domineering attitude that pissed off the other Beatles. Remember, not only did George leave the band for awhile, but so did Ringo. And John's attitude is best summed up by "How Do You Sleep at Night?". George was also highly underrated as a lead guitar player, as he had a real talent for blending his leads into songs without being overly obtrusive. If you listen to the breakdowns of the Beatles music, and isolate each instrument, you'll find that George contributed a hell of a lot of guitar leads that you didn't realize were there when you listened to the songs as a whole.

    That good morning solo is insane. Listening to it on the album, it just oozes McCartney and Taxman. I would be interested to know if those bizarre raga like hammer on pull offs came from george and his sitar playing or whether McCartney's ear was just positioned that way. Either way, one of the best solos in history and completely overlooked sadly.

    The bottom line is: Paul is such a genius, able to play, to make wonderful, divine, out of this world, music, with anything, any instrument you put in front of him.
    The man does not only plays, or creates, music. He´s not just a musician. Macca is LIVING, WALKING, MUSIC!!! "... miles above..." (as sung in "Helter Skelter") anyone else - maybe except for LVBeethoven and WA Mozart. Paul is, indeed, the Mozart/Beethoven of our times! And this is probably under-rating him...

    Just a interesting observation about the tune/melody of Yesterday:
    Actually, all verses start with a different melody:
    1. verse) F F F (Yesterday)
    2. verse) G F F (that's what 99% will tell you is the actual melody)
    3. verse) A F F
    Why is it that - of these three versions - nearly everybody will chose the G F F as the 'actual melody'? Hmmm, interesting - or?

      His guitar solo on Taxman was savage! He knew George was getting deep into Indian classical music, and Paul distilled the essence of George's exploration and translated it into a blistering guitar solo. It stands as one of the best of 1960s.

      @@MPfrance Ah! For years I'd thought it was McCracken but then I heard Robert Rodriguesz of the Something About The Beatles podcast say it was McCartney. This debate must be settled immediately! Either way, that solo has been a persistent earworm for me going on 20+ years.

    That dam band had to much talent that should have been not allowed legally. If they were a corporation in the US, the US government would have broken them up - like they did with Standard Oil for monopolistic practices. : ). Seriously - I have been listening to Beatles music for the last 50 years and I am still amazed by their music after all this time. And, to think there whole body of work was done before their late 20's! The Beatles broke up officially in 1970 - that means John Lennon was 30 years old and McCartney 28? Unbelievable. I think I was still in diapers in my 20's.

    Hi Mike, Awesome video. Thanks! Yes, Paul is to be appreciated on every level. Was always amazed to hear it was him playing the solo on Taxman. Right, Paul was originally a guitar player in the band and most people probably don't realize he took up the bass after Stu's untimely death, as John and George weren't about to put their guitars down. So, Paul was working in partnership in a big way, with being so flexible. My favorite song with Paul on Bass is George's "Something" that is one beautiful melodic bass line he laid down there. Great playing Mike, thank you!

    I'm 68, been playing since I was 14. yes since 1963. right when the Beatles came out. I was from a family of eleven children. There was no money for guitar lessons. My younger brother and I learned to play all the Beatles songs by ear. I wish I would have had you around. Of course there was no internet then either. Anyway what I'm trying to say is that "you blew me away." Thanks for the breakdown on the Beatles music.Loved every minute of it.

      You are most welcome Mark and FYI - I too was a young lad during the Beatles reign and learned all their songs by ear. Matter of fact - as a prerequisite for him asking my sister to a dance - I taught another lad (a bit older than me) "Day Tripper."

      A lot of respect to most people who learned playing instruments by just listening to it. Most of the generation now a days just download chords or tabs and not really learning much about playing but rather for the sake that they can just play the song and pretty much they just depend on it.. but if you can listen and get to play it, that is just awesome!

    • @Writer538
      @Writer538 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, don't you think there are two kinds or meanings of "learned it by ear"? Many or most people, I think, believe it to include learning even the chords by ear. Others assume one knows chords and just mean that someone figured out which chords (and right hand work) to use where.

    actually I was reading that when the time came to choose who was gonna play what, George flat out refused to play the bass, same with John so Paul, the one who always wanted things to go smoothly, volunteered to do it. But he was always and foremost a GUITAR player.

    • @dallasbrubaker6054

      Isn't a bass a guitar? I am not being facetious, just wondering.

    • @jom0bx189
      @jom0bx189 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dallas Brubaker You could say that but not really. Originally a bass was an upright bass (double bass). These instruments were big providing a really low pitch with their long necks and big bodies. When bands like the Beatles took off they needed a smaller alternative to the upright bass. Just as the big hollow body of acoustic guitars were replaced with solid bodies with pickups, they decided to do the same thing with a bass. They kept the long neck, added frets, and put it on a solid body with pickups. While a guitar is meant to have a elaborate sound with many different sounds and complicated melodies, a bass *at its core* consists of keeping rhythm with an in key noise. BUT, a good bass player can add a lot to the song. Look at Paul McCartney (Beatles) and John Deacon (Queen). Paul is known for writing the best melodies in the world. He wasn’t going to let playing bass inhibit his ability to play those melodies so in his bass playing you can hear elaborate arrangements. Paul used a pick when playing bass which isn’t really something you do. Deacon I wouldn’t say added melodies to songs but would add a lot of meat to the song. He just gave the song a lot more substance.

      @@MPfrance As far as Paul using the two finger "Travis" style, a lot of the early fingerpickers used two fingers in a style very similar to Paul, i.e. John Hurt, Doc Watson, check out "Windy and Warm". I am sure Paul had heard, and probably seen, and loved, both of these guys.
