    Just a casual reminder that the Pokemon franchise has an estimated worth of almost 100 billion dollars. There is LITERALLY no excuse for half assed attempts like this one. It is literally the highest grossing singular media franchise and we haven't had ONE next gen Pokemon game that doesn't look like a 3DS port. Let that sink in for just a moment...

      I'd disagree on lets go pikachu and eevee, those games genuinely did LOOK good, they just sucked from a gameplay perspective because they did the whole pokemon go thing. They also had returning features and incredible implementation of scaling and ridable/following pokemon. As boring as they were to play, they're the best the mainline series has looked in 3d with consistency.

      There are some parts of Gen 8 which actually look really great. Specially the towns.
      I really liked the forest with the fairy and ghost Pokemon as well.
      But yes, most of the time, even those games looked bad.
      I would disagree with the statement that they look terrible ALL throughout but the parts which look plain and bad...really look plain and bad.

    Going from the 3ds remakes to this is just... insane. Those games had so much more going graphically on a handheld with exponentially less processing and graphical ability. It boggles my mind that they thought these new games were up to par.

      Even going from Let's Go. When Arlo brought up the random encounters and how LGPE did it, I look back and even if these were more in the LGPE style of chibi than what we got, and the mixture of overworld and random encounters like in SwSh, it would make a big difference IMO. I haven't got the game yet as I put it on my Christmas wishlist, but now I've caught up enough on TH-cam to see the reactions and what it looks like, I'm starting to wonder that if I do get it, I will be unsure how long I will stay engaged for, and if I don't get it for Christmas, if I will even buy it in the first place and just learn the story through a let's play to at least have familiarity with the story before Legends: Arceus comes out.

      This is the most confusing part for me the new games feel lazily made

    • @itskdog
      @itskdog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ironcaptianspider Having now played through 95% of the story, I'd say it's not lazy (it's clear that work and care was put into the game), but more rushed for a November deadline.
      For some people that prefer the classic gameplay style where the focus is on gameplay, this is a return to form.
      Personally, as someone who only got into the game with Gen 7, I've felt disinterested and was just going through the motions. The weird level scaling is my biggest issue. In between gyms, you're always overlevelled, yet as soon as you get to the gym you're at the right level, yet the levels drop as soon as you leave the gym again, so you're one-shotting Pokémon all the time.

      @AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@itskdog "It's clear ethat work and care was put into the game".
      Bro. all they did was add 3d graphics on a 2d game. the rest is the same. from dialogue, from characters to even the underground. Besides the graphics, they did add pokemon's walking around as we see them, rather then not seeing them.....but only in the underground.

    • @itskdog
      @itskdog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlejandroRodriguez-cy8ee They painstakingly recreated everything to be exactly as it was, but in the SwSh engine and with brand new graphics that feel both new and familiar, with a few new features like Pokémon following you and updates to the underground, etc. They could have not put in the extra effort to do that and it would have sold exactly as well.
      I fully admit that even though I, personally, didn't enjoy the game a whole lot (though reading online, the people that preferred the first 4 generations over the last few seem to feel that this is a return to form for the series), I can still tell how they put in work that, if they really were lazy, they wouldn't have bothered to do.

Even with technical and artistic limitations, the player can fill in the holes by imagining the scenario in their head. Because they kept this game EXACTLY the same but removed the technical and artistic limitations, the holes are no longer filled by your imagination because the holes are in 4K HD. To me it’s just the fact that Pokémon had been making Pokémon games for over twenty years and they have not yet found another gameplay idea that has worked like the original style has. There is only so much innovation you can do to the Pokémon formula and I understand why many are burnt out. My first Pokémon game was Pokémon moon. Played it, loved it, I still do but I understand why the game isn’t seen in such a good light. To older fans playing Pokémon the game is basic and doesn’t do anything very new. To a child the game is magical and fun. It’s to be expected and honestly I would not be surprised if game freak knew this and really don’t mind it. I don’t have the numbers but I would not be surprised if children make up the vast majority of modern day Pokémon players and spenders (well, parents but you know). To game freak it means less work with no monetary drawback.

Some of the concept arts for BDSP looked eerily similar to what Legends Arceus is doing. So the main theory is that Gamefreak took Ilca ideas and did it themselves and then forced Ilca to make a faithful remake of Diamond and Pearl so that it wouldn't overshadow Legends Arceus. ORAS came out and it ended up being pretty good. It took a few things away that people liked from the originals, but unlike BDSP they actually tried new things with that game such as giving pokemon mega evoultions, and groudon and kyogre having cool primal forms, adding a new fan favorite character, and the delta episode was a really nice touch. And then sun and moon came out and that was the most fun ive had with a pokemon game in a while, completely new mechanics never seen before in any pokemon game prior and the z moves were just beautiful. I believe there's a certain lack of artistic direction in the first place. I don't want to say they're using "default" shaders, but the lighting definetly looks amateurish.
      Compare it to other "chibi" games like Link's Awakening (the whole "diorama" look makes the visuals feel cohesive and justified), Little Town Hero (which has visible line-art to make the characters pop out), or even FF XV Pocket Edition (which uses similar shading but the character design is very stylized).

      If Chibi was the issue then I don't see how anyone has been enjoying Pokemon for the last 30 years. That's the style they've had for the longest time, and the graphics design in these remasters was a throwback to the original style.

    Imagine what this game could've been like if they had gone the HGSS route and just packed this game to the brim with cutting edge features and pushed the envelope as far as they could while retaining the identity of the original. Imagine what this game could've been like if they released it as Pure Platinum instead of arbitrarily splitting it into two separate $60 purchases. Like the AVGN community, 99.9% of the fanbase are haters who don't even play the games or buy them anyways even though they go in knowing they'll hate them to complain about pointless idiotic things. Who cares that the EXP share is forced? If the game is balanced around that mechanic it's not a problem, aka trainers being equal in power to you and not being Youngerster Timmy who only uses only ratata and pigey every battle. Most prevalent in Gen 2, where you can power level your starter and curb stomp the endless trainers with weak Pokemon and ever more so wild Pokemon that never go above Lv.25 until literally the final dungeon where they're now Lv.35. (in more recent Pokemon games you can be Lv.35 by the 5th or 6th gym, btw) I'm like the only person in the world that still likes Pokemon anymore. This community has become far to toxic. The problem isn't so much the Chibi art style, it's how it is used in the game.
    The Chibi art style is supposed to be a heavily stylized rendering of a character or thing to make it more readable from a long distance off, that is the impression it is supposed to convey, that you're more stylizing and caracturing the art for long-distance viewing (like from a bird's eye view).
    But then Game Freak combines it with super-duper close-ups, which were not in the original game and feel unnatural when used thusly.
    Most of the graphics look perfectly fine. The problem I noticed was nighttime. Looks like just a simple filter was placed on the world and no additional shadows or contrast darkening was added.

For example making all these evolutionary items more easily accessible or available earlier than post game. The Gen 4 evolutions were a huge hit with fans and of the ones I've checked on, you can't use any of them for the main game. The only ones I could find that weren't post game were the Thunderstone and Dusk Stone around the 7th or 8th gym. Unless you want to grind in The Underground and leave it to chance. They also made the Electrizer and Magmarizer version exclusive. I get Magby and Elekid..but the items as well?

Yet I find myself just being sad with all the missed potential and the fact that we probably *won't* get another shot at these games being remade. This is it. We're stuck with a bare minimum 3D imitation of a 2.5D pixel art style that only really worked because of the use of low resolution sprites, slightly improved gameplay that only really seeks to cover over the old holes with the thinnest layer of paint, and a very okay-ish cover of the original OST that doesn't do much to reimagine. There's just nothing new for me, or anyone else who has played DPPt to do here, really. Platinum still feels like the better experience.

I just don't get this remake at all: the 1:1 nature of it comes across as nostalgia bait, and yet the 3D visuals that are far worse than the original's mix of 2D and 3D could not be more jarring for anyone trying to play these for nostalgia. If they wanted to go the nostalgia route, they should've done something like Ocarina of Time 3D and make the remake look the way you mistakenly remember the original looking.

    10:15-This is a great example of the "Zooming into poor visuals" thing Arlo mentioned. The setting looks fine from the overhead view but then the camera zooms in ultra-close and the floor textures end up looking flat and grainy and you notice there's no actual depth or definition to the floor because that's all baked into the textures themselves, meant to be seen from above and you can see the shadows bugging out and one particular spike of Byron's hair is casting a shadow onto the wall behind him that you wouldn't see unless they went in for that extra-close view...And that's without all the models and shadows on the lower floors popping in during the transition shots...

    • @ConorThorners18
      @ConorThorners18 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I feel like that's not even the worst example. At 1:12 for instance... why on earth is it that zoomed in?? Their heads are bigger than the text box even. And even with the visual quality aside (flat textures, etc etc), zooming in that far just feels incredibly claustrophobic. More so at 3:22, especially when the player moves to the side towards the camera lol. The cut to zoom also feels super janky and sudden, almost as though it's trying to fight against the geometry of the world so it doesn't cause any clipping.
      There are just so many things that feel half-assed or just straight-up unfinished with this game. For the transition into Gym battle, I get that they're trying to replicate the visuals and UI of the originals, but having the Leaders' (kinda ugly and similarly unfinished-looking) 3D renders stiffly slide onto the screen when you approach them reminds me of some fan-games that I played a few years ago. It looked fine in the originals, but that was all due to the system's limitations, which are now stripped away. I find it hard to believe no one wanted to update or alter that original animation so that it'd look better out of sheer creative urge lol, cause there's so much more that could be done with that.

      I probably wouldn't mind the flat textures so much, as clever usage of the camera can hide this. But because the camera frequently turns into a microscope, it's immersion breaking. Pokémon games lately feel so sloppily thrown together that it almost gives me vibes that animes made for merch do. Like so many shows have the problem of being nothing like their video game counterparts or card games, Yu-gi-oh is a good example of the latter statement. Lately though it feels like Pokémon games AND the anime are afterthoughts for the merch.
    I get that kids today do some stupid stuff but like Pokémon never needed to be dumbed or watered down before, the challenge was why so many people are in here or any other comment section, hell it's probably why so many people can say they've been bored of Pokémon lately.
    I think if Pokémon takes away things from consumers, cause they do listen to some shit we say, a miniscule amount but they do, is to not be afraid to bring back moments like Clay walling us off in Gen 5, to have Legendary pokemon actually feel like a spectacle, to feel like we're having a genuine adventure with hardships. Not to explore like Dora over here in the easiest landscapes possible. Sorry for the rant but these games are sucking the energy outta me lol

    You could be thinking that Pokemon has a limited budget.
    But realistically, they could create the best looking und most innovative games out there as their budget is approximately limitless.
    So, that must mean they want their games to be like this. It's a shame

      I guess I understand on some level that you wouldn't want to pay more than necessary for a developer to make a game for you. A company is trying to maximize profits here. Problem is Game Freak isn't willing to invest even a pittance of what they make from these games. They should be investing way more, and they should have way more employees in their own company as well so the quality of these games can be improved.

      They've pretty much been coasting for a long time. Every now and then they get good ideas, but the Pokemon formula has been absolutely done to death. It's why I typically play only every other generation. Because every other generation means that the same old formula feels fresh to me, and it's like replaying an old game I like, but with some new surprises.
      But now? If I ever feel that itch again, I think I'm just going to do an Y or Moon Nuzlocke instead. I've got those games lying around. They've got the 3D battle animations, and Mega Evolutions are probably the best clever idea they've had.

    This is also the first new “remake” that seems to not have any compatibly with its counterparts game.
    Oras can work with x and y and has the full dex. Hg and ss could connect with gen 4 and had the full dex.
    I think this has no compatibility with sword and shield. Kinda makes you wonder what’s the point of Pokémon home if you can’t move them into other games?
    And talking about the old remakes, how come the Pokémon following isn’t just your first Pokémon in your party from the beginning of the game like hg, ss. And no wild Pokémon dex grass thing like oras.
    I’m very upset with the things they took out like all the furniture in the underground.
    On a side note, I liked the way let’s go looked.
    It just seems so underwhelming for gen 4 remake compared to the other 3. ORAS had more. More Pokémon in the dex. More added features. More story.
    This game seems it was just to check off that they made a gen 4 remake and collect that money, and it’s sad. Feel like I wasted my money a bit. I thought it was gonna be better too.

    "The style isnt bad, it just matches the original!"
    What a lot of people seem to forget when they say this is that the original style was designed for a 2d game on a tiny ass 256x192 display. This style works for pixelart on a DS, not as a full 3d game on the tv. It just looks weird and soulless like this.

      Also, the original's pixel art just flat-out looked better than this, with a lot more expression and detail. Seriously; one of the advantages of 3D models over 2D sprites is that you can make the characters more expressive, and yet the original sprites are more expressive than the 3D models.

      I am personally a huge fan of the cute chibis, but I can agree with the point that the execution of the concept could have been a lot better. I never played lets go, but from videos the textures, colors, and lighting are just prettier. Or if you look at Link's Awakening stuff like cliffs and trees have more modeling/depth, and are layered in a less repetitive way. Plus the characters could definitely stand to have more motion and emotion, even as chibis.
