The sony engineers must cringe watching this. they spend all of their time trying to get photos to look as close to the human eye as possible. Only to get reviewers saying that the uranium fed bright green grass or glowing orange deers in the Samsung photos look better and therefore it takes better pictures. Not true! The Dynamic Range on Sony is HORRIBLE! Human eyes don't clip out blue sky and make it look like a grey mess!

  • @delicrux
    @delicrux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

For any one who is interested in a solid comparison and unbiased review dont waist your time on this video.
The reviewer intentionally only uses auto mode on the xperia. And the comparison in photo and color quality changes significantly with the pro mode features.
I will address some of the things he was unhappy about.
    The zoom camera comparison:
S21 ultra has a wider lense and farther zoom, this is correct.
But the s21 is adding computational processing to increase sharpening to un natural levels this is also causing the loss of colors and details in the stone (over exposed whites)and the leafs(uniform crushed and fake) ex @3:54.
    The night mode:
You should be using pro mode for night photos and increase the exposure time and shutter speed to let more light in.
Regarding image stabilization samsung uses the wide angle lens and crops the photo using ai to keep the image from shacking its a smart trick but limits the available resolution
    Regarding selfies:
No excuse on that the front camera is garbage because it cant use pro mode...(at least i havent seen a single reviewer try or mention it...)
As for the blown out whites:
Pro mode lets you select shutter speed and exposure level and they let you calibrate the white in the scene with cards so you can pre adjust the white level in your current lighting and then take the photo. This is not available in any other phones except the xperia. And not many people know about it. I have only seen one reviewer talk about the feature on the xperia 1ii. James lavish sony xperia 1ii camera (complete review) he also does a excellent professional camera test video comparing the xperia 1ii vs the iphone 12 pro max
    The deer photo:
The colors are more natural but would be even better if it was in pro mode. Samsung has always had unnatural color in their screens and photos, the jab about what would a client want is bs in digital photography if you are not shooting 4k photos in raw and putting your photos in photoshop with a calibrated monitor for proper color grading and editing you are not getting the best quality you can in your photos.
This is how he or his edditors get the warm tone and dark professional feel same with unbox therapy and any other pro they dont just throw a camera on a desk and post a video everything is setup for the scene and the shot.
What you choose is really up to preference if you want to vlog and take vibrant photos/selfies using a led brick get the s21 ultra.
If you want to consume and make accurate professional level creative content but dont have or want to carry a camera around get the xperia.
I bought the s21 ultra on launch my biggest gripe switching from the lg g8 to the s21 ultra was:
    No headphone jack
No sd card slot/ expandable storage.
No charger in the box. Previous samsung chargers not powerful enough for full fast charging.
Terrible battery life had to keep the high refresh rate off.
Glitchy os on the 888 processor apps would force close ov3r and over again and then would not close and continue running in the background draining the battery.
It was unreasonably heavy pulling pants down....yes with a belt.
To large thumb couldn't type or select things one handed
I liked the image quality on the s21 camera(normal and macro photos not super zoom) but could not get a single photo to appear natural
The colors were always wrong no mater what i did because the screens are calibrated to be more vibrant by adding around 75% green.(tested with a colormunkey)
So not only was the built in color profile for photos and video set up this way but the screen it self makes it impossible to get a natural photo. Color accuracy is relative to the accuracy of your screen.
So i only took black and white photos on the s21 ultra and then i sent it back because i just couldn't stand it anymore.
Also s21 ultra gets hot and throttles like crazy.

When taking photos I think it is better to get a closer to life photo that isn't over saturated or sharpened too much because you get more control as the user. Samsung loves to make their photos pop but honestly it really doesn't match real life at all. If you are someone who likes to edit photos even just a little bit then the Xperia is the clear winner. The night shots are also a major win in my eyes for the Sony. They look like night, with proper shadows where the S21 tries to make it feel like day

    Other things important about phones:
    •Animation transition speed
    •everything battery/power related
•feel, comfort, temperature, lifespan of brightness/ pixels
    •sound/ speakers
•Details of unique customizable options within accessibility and other settings.
•Sound difference using same exact headphones under various conditions like train/ truck noises, jackhammer noise, on the car speakers, etc.
•Signal reliability under many conditions and the limits of connectivity
•Potential tips like suggested accessories that can pick up what's lacking. (Example: memory cards, magnet charger issues, discounts on a life-proof phone case, etc.).

Android phones need the sd 895 ISP to truly master the camera experience. The 888 gets close if perfectly optimised which the oem's aren't capable of, the extra capability of the 895 should bridge that gap tho :)
IPhones have been at that amazing level since the iphone 11pro but like... The camera software is limited af all around so it leaves enthusiasts disappointed (even apps like moment or filmic don't bridge the gap) that said though, the base camera of the 13 pro should be so freaking good that it also bridges the gap where nothing is left to be desired out of a smartphone camera...
In conclusion next years camera battles will be the most important of the decade. S22 vs iPhone 13 pro

  • @troy5568
    @troy5568 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't like it when the Samsung heavily tries so hard to eliminate shadows by brightening them up way too much.
Besides, it's not like the Sony can't resolve as much details either, as editing the RAW photos properly can yield the same or even better results than the Samsung, depending on the user's preference.
Also, it was clear that the front-facing camera shootout at night was intentionally made to favor the Samsung because Sony has no Night Mode. At the very least, the Samsung could've just been taken straight out of Auto mode with no Night Mode at all to keep everything comparable.
Also, how ironic is it that you said that the Samsung has better dynamic range on the front camera, but the image you showed just depicted the Sony with the better dynamic range with the person being slightly better exposed than the Samsung.
**Is this the modern day version of so-called "Tech Reviewers?"**

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

First rear camera video shootout: The Sony is not pale, rather the Samsung is just oversaturated. I know it because even my sister's S20+ does the same thing, and based on reviews, the S21 Ultra isn't any different from that. Stabilization, however, is much better on the Sony as the Samsung looks quite shaky. But hey, let's not mention that because we need to make Samsung look better and Sony the worst of all, right?

    • @troy5568
      @troy5568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Zoom video: I know the Samsung will be better since it has farther optical zoom range, but that sample from the Sony doesn't even look like it's the same 10x range as on the Samsung. It's much closer than the Samsung, so of course it's going to lose more details.
Anyway, the 10x zoom ranges on both phones are going to be different because they have different focal lengths from their main sensors that indicate 1x reference point.

I like Samsung phone, especially S21 Ultra, but in this comparison, I have to say I like Sony's picture's and video more.
Sony's camera does not try to bright up the shadow area, which give it more pronounced pictures or videos.
I mostly don't need to see details in the shadow or what people call High Dynamic Range in my pictures or videos if the result is like having smoky or foggy pictures or videos. Unfortunately this is what I see happen in some of S21 Ultra pictures and videos in this video, especially in the night. What I need the pictures or videos that looks like I want, although more saturated is still okay.
I used to have Samsung Phone and it always tried to brightened up the night pictures or videos scene and I always have to tone down the brightness so it only took the scene of the night light instead of a foggy night.
    For example,
8:32 : i usually only take pictures like Sony in the left, I don't care about the grass, what I want to see is the area with the lamp
8:43 : again, Sony is the one I like to take, who cares about the grass, what I want to see is the building with light scene, and Sony's picture make it stand out
8:34 : in this one, Sony is over exposed, however S21 Ultra is like a foggy night again, if Sony do not over exposed, I will definitely choose Sony again.
8:05 : in this video, if you focus on the building, then I will definitely choose Sony, the colour of the building is much cleaner
    and so on...
I guess have explained my point...

As always, under almost every Sony vs another flagship review, you'll find a flock of butthurt Sony fanboys crying about:
    - Reviewers are biased and have an agenda against Sony
    - How the reviewer should have used the Pro mode, ignoring the fact that other android flagships have pro modes.
    - Sony has realistic colors, but ignoring the average dynamic range their phones produce
    - "Realistic" night pictures
    - How the reviewer should wait few months before doing the comparison, they scream and cry about the updates, but again ignore that Sony announces their phones and allegedly wait 6 months to tune them and release a finished product.
    - Last but not least, it's a pro phone, it's a phone for pros, pros this pros that.
Never in my life have I seen a more brainwashed fanbase.

It's not really false what people would say- as if you go to 6:42 you will realise there is a cross mark on HDR. Although the Xperia isn't perfect, it's different, has better values as a company and doesn't mock apple before copying them.
      - This means HDR was turned off in video and possibly this whole review so the whole time the reviewer only compared SDR performance on the Xperia to HDR on the S21 Ultra. Which if true means Xperia is actually the better buy!
      - The pro mode is literally the selling point of this phone, kind of like 'zoom' on the S21 Ultra which is compared by reviewers, funnily to devices without it. Anyone buying this phone will be using the pro apps that allow for features like 4K 120fps HDR video compared to max of 4K 30fps HDR video on the S21 Ultra, so yeah the Xperia is better here. Or with better AF, all photos of people in the Xperia 1 III will be in focus, unlike the issues with Samsung, also faster with 20fps burst shot photography.
      - Sony has a setting inside the photography pro app to enable better HDR (auto HDR), so that would give better HDR and again is something that wasn't used as part of this comparison.
      - Night mode, 100% agree Sony isn't up to date with competitors on this and definitely needs to improve! Same with selfie camera.
      - The 6 months wait is because of manufacturing issues, Sony had to forcibly downscale to remain in the smartphone industry. This means that smartphones will launch at different intervals in different regions- the earliest sales starting in early June. Also as components are not made in china, but in Malaysia- this means more time in production and more labor, especially with their commitment. For example all Xperia 1 III devices are calibrated by hand to meet color accuracy standards- if you pick one up and compare the display to any other smartphone there will be a night and day difference in picture quality. Sony is just that better, even the Xperia 1 which is two years old is more color accurate than the S21 Ultra when watching content such as movies/ tv shows.

@@tricker7060 Should look at the whole picture instead of what's being said by strangers on the internet. I'll just say Sony fans tend to be more vocal and it's partially because of Sony's own culture and vision. How they retain the headphone jack as people asked for it, having micro sd/ expandable storage or two sim cards. 4K display, investment in better picture quality, audio quality and 'pro' features which honestly not everyone will use- so it is niche. But companies like Samsung will mock Apple and then copy them, so never mind a 30W charger in the box, they don't have one. They also don't have a notification led, headphone jack, expandable storage etc. Samsung even downgraded the displays on the S21 and S21+ to 1080p. So when buying from a brand, you buy into their values and by continuing to buy Samsung you are encouraging them to do this to consumers. Again, these are just my opinions- competition is always good and hopefully Sony can stay in the game- they were the first to HDR video, waterproof standards on phones, HD recording, 4K display, 4K 120fps HDR video, 20fps photography, variable zoom telephoto etc which is exciting tech!

First things first , I own a s21 Ultra and I love it . As for this video , I believe it's biased in A LOT of the comparisons. The most striking one in the video comparisons is at 5:00 , where anyone that has seen an actual deer (and the reviewer certainly has since he was there) knows that the 1 iii colors are exactly right , plus there is a shaking in the s21U footage (although it could be because of the way the phones were held) . Secondly , at the pause on 5:30 , can you really not see the noise on the s21U ?? Why don't you compare the colors there ?
Moving on , the night mode . Again , I LOVE the night mode on the S21U , because it allows me to take photos that I normally couldn't, but they certainly are NOT natural . I love having the option to shoot an unnatural night mode picture when I want to show what was there instead of darkness . But you can't go bashing the Sony as a worst camera in every single take when that is clearly not the case . At 8:07 it really IS a night and day difference , because apple makes it look like it's daytime , whereas the 1 iii takes a clean video that STILL LOOKS LIKE IT'S NIGHT . And the absolute worst example of biased reviewing is the photo at 8:28 . He even says "there is no comparison" and I agree , but in favor of the 1 iii 🤣 Take a moment and compare the grass . Which one looks like what you expect to see during that time ? Look at the sculpture on the 1iii , do you see those green details that turn to white in the middle ? Compare that to the S21U . Lastly , look at the S21U's trees on the background , don't they look like they are lit with a thousand flashes and all in the same depth ? Compare that to the 1iii smh . The 8:48 one looks so much worse at the S21U that I would turn off the night mode and I'm pretty sure the photo would look better .
I love review and comparison videos , but this is the first one that I will actually dislike . I don't care if a phone has a better camera than mine in some cases , you are not going to hurt my feelings . What I want to see is a fair comparison , especially if I was a dude trying to find which phone suits me more . Sorry for the wall of text , here is a potato 🥔

Agrees. Very bias review. Sony wants the picture to become what your actually is seeing and you can almost see the layers on the other phones when it comes to hdr getting the feeling all phones on other brands do this. First it takes the best shoot of the sky, it is the best shoot of the background and it over the blue sky and last it cuts in the object. It's looks in my eyes as i would have done a montage kinda. Jerry Berglund good HDR works up to a point as most phone sensors do not have the native DR of our perception. It’s just that most processing adds all sorts of things to increase sharpness, clarity, colour saturation.
It’s funny in Lightroom I can increase “clarity” and texture sliders, which gives the impression of more details. You can see some phones seem to do this too and reviewers assume that the detail was like that in real life

    1. Wouldn't call Samsung's 108 mp camera as an advantage over Sony's 12 mp. Buyer sensors have their own ups and downs.
    2. Much brighter screen? From what I've seen in the show rooms Samsung's screen is a bit brighter. Not by much. And I would rather sacrifice some brightness for screen longevity.
    3. You can also enable HDR on Xperia front camera, which you didn't.
    4. You're talking about underexposed Xperia photo and never say a word when Samsung does the same on a selfie shot.
    5. Someone likes true to life night shots. Someone wants a night mode that turns night into day, making it a blurry mess. The same can be done with 1iii by adjusting settings in the Photo Pro.
    6. Excessive use of HDR tends to flatten the video/photo and remove some details. Again you can enable all of that in the Photo Pro.
    7. It seems like pre production units have didn't have final software tweaks for the camera. Many people who I know say clarity and sharpness are much improved after updates.
    8. 70 mm and 105 mm FL is very useful for portraits, 45 angle shots and street photography. While 10x zoom on the Galaxy is useful only to shoot some long distance objects.
It really feels like you are biased and lean towards Samsung.
You use just basic mode without HDR and say about some shortcoming Xperia has (not even all of them are shortcomings, but different processing). All the while ignore such big features like 20 fps burst with af/ae and noise reduction in low light, best smartphone autofocus, 2 pro apps with plenty of interesting features.
I suspect your next video will get the same tone: price Samsung and bash Sony. Predictable.
Won't comment anymore to promote your biased reviews.

They pay to you tubers and newspaper article writers to promote their products so that they never make a video and write against them, but promote their products. This is their advertisement model. This is the problem with Sony that they don’t pay to anyone. That is why no youtuber, tv channel or newspaper article writer has made a video comparing a fast moving subject using Xperia’s 20 fps with Samsung or apple. Honestly, telephoto camera is not that useful in real life which is promoted by you tubers, but camera capable of shooting sharp photos at 20fps is extremely useful in real life; for example, if you want to click photos of kids dancing or your pet doing something. No one is promoting this. At the end of the day, these you tubers, or newspaper article writers have joined this profession to make money and not to tell you the truth.

There is a difference between over-sharpening of the image and actual sharpness of the lens At timeline 3:60, S21U image is over-sharpened and looks digitized although the reviewer think it's sharper than the Sony. S21U images also tend to have over-saturated colors while X1iii has much more natural colors. However, it seems many people, including reviewers, think saturated colors are more pleasing. At 10x, the S21U definitely out-performs the X1iii as the S21U has a 10x optical lens. No debate there. If one needs to use >8x regularly, then get the S21U. However, I think most people don't need beyond 8x for 99% of their images. Best thing to do is try out both at the stores.

@@patrickjunior7288 I think you need to pause lol! 120Hz at QHD is peanuts, Xperia bringing in the big guns with 120Hz at 4K. Plus a load of other gaming features- e.g. 4K 240hz display with motion blur, shadowplay like feature to record last 30s of gameplay, gamma adjustment, in-game sound equaliser, HS Power Control (charge power bypassing the battery to not overheat). Snapdragon 888 is not a feature, every flagship is expected to have it. The S21 Ultra is boring because they took last years phone and re-labelled it pretty much. Still no headphone jack, no micro sd, no easy to remove sim tray, still has a notch/ cut-out, no front facing stereo speakers, no new innovative hardware. Xperia on the other hand, improved the speakers- bought 360 reality audio support natively, came up with better variable zoom camera tech- although it's first gen so similar to the S20 Ultra which had issues and should be tweakable over software. The Xperia display (whilst being 4K) has much better colour accuracy as each display is calibrated by hand to meet a standard- which has a labour cost and is part of the premium you pay for. The S21 Ultra cannot match the Xperia camera in some areas like 4K 120fps video, 20fps burst shot photography, fastest AF lock on etc. So not the best, also with Xperia three camera apps are for professionals- so the video records in the wider BT2020 color gamut and gives fps options/ look, custom white balance etc- which are not all available on the S21 Ultra (whilst the Xperia can do 4K 120fps in HDR, the S21 Ultra caps at 30fps in 4K HDR so yeah pretty boring despite being richer in R&D).

Emotions aside, each phone has its plus points. Sony has excellent colour accuracy and video stability, but Samsung has better sharpness and exposure. This means Sony performs excellent for close up photos and videos in normal light, but Samsung does better in low light (and even where there is too much light), and has better zoomed in photos/videos, and better selfie cam. If you want a phone you can quickly take a pic with, no thinking, that's the S21 Ultra. If you want a phone you're willing to learn manual controls for, and willing to take time to take a good picture, then Sony is great.

There's no point telling them these. They all already know it. The point of this video is not to properly review Sony as their targeted customers. They just review it as the sake of promoting the biased Samsung. See how there is no independent review of Sony, they rush this comparison video out to somehow showcase Samsung. Autofocus and fast moving capture is ignored and not tested at all in this review. How is it even a proper test when what Sony focus at most is autofocus and moving subject capture. So a unprofessional channel

Interestingly, this video made me like the Sony even more. Side by side, it showed the technical superiority of the S21 Ultra, but also illuminated how used to the HDR and computational photography look of smartphones we all are at this point.
Take a look at the selfie videos at the beginning, for instance. Side by side, we can see the reasons that make the S21 Ultra technically superior. But look at each of the videos individually as if you were just watching someone who recorded it, and I think you might prefer the more natural look of the Sony.
Same thing and very evident with night shots. Side by side, you see the technically superior work of the S21 Ultra. But, look at each individually, and you might very well find the Sony to be more natural and pleasing.
And the argument from me is that "more natural" is the better starting point -- it gives you more control of where you want the image to go.

So what are you saying that the Sony phone camera captures photos and videos the way it looks in the human eye and the Samsung does not ? Are you saying that the Samsung phone basically photo shops the pictures and videos just so videos and pictures can be seen clearer and more visible at night ? I would really like to know what you are trying to imply here. I'm brand loyal to Sony in terms of all types of electronics and I was thinking of upgrading from X1 to the X1 III but a lot of review people are bashing the phone especially the camera. This makes me very hesitant in purchasing this $1200 phone

    • @AlokSomani
      @AlokSomani 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Dizzy160 That is what I'm saying, yes. I will say that "reality" to human eyes is probably somewhere in between -- more dynamic range than the Sony, but not quite as much as modern Samsung photos.
But, importantly, if the phone starts you off with more of the computational look already added, it gives you less flexibility in possible outcomes (what if you want dark shadows, blow out highlights, more natural colors, etc). I like the less processed approach because I'm used to real cameras and the Sony gets you closer to that in my opinion.

Computerised or natural calculation for the picture output quality.
Sometimes, the camera guy just want to retrieve text or details from a far distant. If is blurry or a muddy photo, but another phone managed to capture the information to digest.
      Sony just failed miserably then.
Is there any convincing video to prove Sony can takes promising night video or photos since it got all the high tech setting on this phone from their Sony camera family?
I found another Taiwan reviewer explained HDR mode for this phone in night photo. It does the job pretty well to my liking.

I have Sony 1 III and my brother has the Samsung s21 ultra. Main camera and the wide-screen camera of Sony is better except in night. Sony looks more natural and samsung photos are more overexposed. Front camera and the telescope of Samsung are way better. The 4k videos are better on Sony if you know how to use the video app. Same with the photo app. Trust me it makes a huge difference.

I have a big question for this reviewer. Do you own an alpha camera? How many times do you use the manual settings compare to the automatic set up. A real photographer is not happy with the automatic mode. They want to dive with true the settings. Even as a Samsung user I feel the color is fake. Not true to life. That is why you need to change the settings.

points taken. the zooming capabilities of the Xperia are totally blown out of the water when it compares to the Galaxy. But the lack of mention to the noise on the video aspect of the S21 is too much focus on the dynamic range of the video. Samsung Galaxy would still win in terms of Auto mode. And the Night Mode comparison was also one wherein Night Mode shouldn't necessarily mean to make night photos look like day but there are points where Xperia takes the cake for having a decently lit photo. there are definitely points in the video where it was just totally an HDR-driven comparison which isn't fair due to the nature of the phones being compared.

Took a framegrab at 3:52, applied an unsharp mask of 200% with 3 pixel radius for the Xperia 1 III. Then you can see that near the left ear there's more detail preserved on the Sony and overall looks better. Applying sharpening is a personal preference but I wish Samsung would add a control for that in their Pro app.
Also dynamic range is incorrectly interpreted since often you see deep blacks becoming dark gray, whites becoming light gray on the Samsung since they push the shadows/highlights significantly. Most people seem to prefer that but luckily Sony didn't. At least Samsung does allow in the pro app an adjustment (but not for all lenses). Or use RAW.

The night mode on the galaxy is, like its competitors that have this feature, unreal or too bright, the street shot is way nicer on the xperia, it looks more natural.
Videos need improvement on the xperia, although the colors are pleasant.
