  • IT’S FINALLY HERE! The GX CS2 Hybrid is born! To my sensibilities this project is MUCH better than a GX L2. Better battery, better charger, runs in more situations and if you already have DeWalt Lithium tools, much cheaper to boot! I had a lot of fun developing this build and I am really pleased with how it worked out. I made some mistakes along the way, they were just opportunities to learn, so you all don’t need to make the same mistakes I did. This is the portable "Tool Battery" based HPA compressor GX should have developed IMHO.
    Better rarely comes cheaper, yet here it is! Send me some photos if you build one yourself, I’d love to see it. Let me know in the comments below what you think. For my money, this is now the absolute best value in a 12VDC portable HPA solutions for your valuable PCP airguns. You will need some basic hand and power tool skills, but you should not be intimidated, it was fun and easy to build. If you have not gotten a GX CS2 yet, you need to, links to those below too! Don’t let me have all the fun, jump in! Schematic available as a pdf on the Target Forge Website, look in the documents section. The handle delete part is also available as a 3D file for printing, or as a ready printed part.

    Would anyone be interested in a connectorized kit that only required the user to drill holes, and mount parts in their CS2? I already have the crimpers, would likely make this mod available to folks not sure about the electricals. Let me know in the comments! You would likely need to modify the motor leads, but that might be all. Might actually be a good use for a Wago wire connector... Hmmmm....

    I'm just getting into PCP air rifles. After purchasing a manual pump I'm realizing I'm not the tough guy I thought I was! I want to build this pump configuration but my power source would be Milwaukee. As all my cordless tools are such. I would assume Milwaukee makes a battery holder. And yes I would use there comparable battery. Great video, excellent content! 👍

    I might mount the battery base and dc-dc converter/fuse into a separate enclosure so I don't need to modify the compressor. The agent for the compressors in my country probably won't honour the warranty if it's modified, but I'll still be able to run it "off the grid".

    I don't know if you've ever talked about your background but you're a true inventor and I would argue, genius.
    My only hesitation in doing this mod is that I'm in the 1 year warranty period for my GX CS2 so if something goes wrong, the manufacturer won't help me after they see the modifications. Do you think I should be concerned with that as long as I following the recommended run interval advice and the lubrication/maintenance advice you provide? Are parts available to buy for the compressor should things go awry?

    • @TargetForge
      @TargetForge  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First of all, there is NO US SERVICE for these units. The warranty is you telling them it broke, and they either send you parts, or a replacement unit. No one at GX, at this time, will ever see your broken compressor. Nothing on this mod/hack stresses the unit in anyway. Same input voltage, same RPM, just smarter power options, that's it. I was selling parts on my site, life has forced me to put that on hold temporarily. I hope to have the GX parts side of the business back in action by the end of November. Prices will go up a bit, because it's the world we live in now, but I expect to get the parts business rolling again shortly.

    • @TFengineer
      @TFengineer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TargetForge Thanks for explaining all that. My compressor is still in the box waiting for my PCPs to arrive. I will definitely be buying my parts through you. Quick question, I didn't buy the Amazon 3 or 4 year warranty because I heard the warranty is also not what it seems. It basically amounts to replacing the unit once in those 3-4 years from what I read in the reviews. Did I make the right decision?

    Well, I was hoping you wouldn't go down this road, lol, but you are invested in DeWalt tools so I get it, I guess... don't want to argue about which is better, but love my Makita tools, and batteries, and love my L2 compressor, I mean how simple and wonderful, I love it to death and the small amount of cost to include the wall unit, is a better value for me, you seem to have plenty of tools and parts... I do love your videos on this pump, and hope you move on to upgrades I may use... Keep going dude...!

      It's all good. Just REALLY keep an eye on that knock off battery and the charger that came with it. I've heard things... True Makita stuff is nice, but they really seem to be lagging the leaders in this space these days, their service is probably best in class though. Not being able to run it off my vehicles was the bigger issue for me, and likely a lot of outdoorsmen as well. Thanks for your comment.

  • @seancarr7827

    Only issue I have with this is as soon as you turn off the compressor your fans turn off too.

    • @TargetForge
      @TargetForge  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not really a problem, mimics the behavior of the factory unit perfectly (L2 Variant). Prevents you from running your battery into the ground. You COULD simply add a switch for fan control, but forgetting to turn them on could get dicey.

    • @seancarr7827
      @seancarr7827 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      More so just so it works like the stock unit when power is plugged in the fans automatically come on and stay on til you unplug the power. Not knocking what you’ve done as I made mine from a Milwaukee 9ah battery. Just would love fans as soon as power is connected thru battery or external power source.
      On another note. Did you know using a large air dryer (mine is the 13.5” long x 2” round) with a check valve make foster on the inlet side, acts like an accumulator for filling scuba tanks. In theory you’re only working against the seated ball valve and the small section of hose running to the air dryer. I filled my large scuba tank in 6 runs of 20 minutes each , last one being half hr, and only seen a max temp of 110 f measured at the side of the piston block.

    • @TargetForge
      @TargetForge  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In your use case, which I do not recommend for the CS2 as it really racks up the hours on the pump, you might consider a separate switch for the fans. The CS4 would be a much better choice for filling that big bottle and it would let you tend to other things during the fill. I love mine. I only use the CS2 for short, direct gun fills. Great to hear you built one! send some photos to me at bill@targetforge.net and we'll feature them on an upcoming video!@@seancarr7827

    • @seancarr7827
      @seancarr7827 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Does that seem in theory like I’m on the right track?

    • @TargetForge
      @TargetForge  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not sure what theory you are referring to. Filling large bottles with a small compressor? Can't say I'm with you there. If you want to allow for a separate switch so you can control the fan operation? Certainly possible, but when used as intended, probably not needed as the L2 (the GX battery unit) does not allow separate fan control either. Would it be good to have if you need to run the pump for extended periods? Probably makes sense.

    • @TargetForge
      @TargetForge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the 18V is a slightly different cell chemistry and the UK market generally lags other markets. The only issue you may see is an earlier "cut off" due the DC/DC converter I used. The 20V battery had more headroom, and consequently will run longer before hitting the undervoltage shutoff on the converter. Having the auto cut off saves the battery from being discharged too far, which is good. Being 2 volts closer to that cutoff due to the 18V cell will likely cost you some amount of run time.
