  • Over the past ten years, it would be hard to identify another person who has had as much influence over the digital and social media evolution of the watch industry as Ben Clymer. In this Collectability Podcast, Ben speaks openly with John Reardon about how he created Hodinkee from his desire to learn as much as possible about watches, to his opinions on Patek Philippe and its position in the industry today.

Mr Clymer is right: the big names (including Patek) owe Hodinkee a great deal in terms of recruiting customers for their watches! I guess I myself am a case in point. Back in 2019 I saw what they had to say about the then newly released 5212A. And, in a slightly naive way, I thought to myself: "what a beautiful watch - I'd like to buy one of those". There then followed two years of the _sheer madness and mayhem_ that one unfortunately has to go through to obtain a steel Patek reference! It happily culminated just over week ago with me driving for 8 hours through utterly horrendous weather here in the UK to buy two Pateks, including the desired 5212A! Of course Hodinkee weren't the only people to talk about the watch, but they played a big part.
(If I'm going to be honest, though, I don't know whether I'll be chasing another sought-after Patek reference any time soon. The experience has been really quite bruising at several levels...)

Love the podcasts! Would suggest only that in editing for youtube, showing the references on screen as they're mentioned would be awesome! Otherwise it's me in a separate tab in google image searches pulling them up. :)
