How to Distress Wood

  • This is a step by step guide how to distress wood. Distressing wood is easy to do with a little patience and the right method. This is my method for how to distress wood. In this video I show you how I am using 2 colors to get that distressed look. A base color and a top color. Making new wood look aged is easy using this method. Follow this guide if you want to make new wood look old.
Distressing wood like this is perfect for that farmhouse look. The base color should be darker than the top color. Once both colors are dry, simply sand the top layer off to get the desired distressing level on your wood. I have used this method to distress coffee tables, distress noodle boards, and to distress a lot of furniture projects. This method is great for distressing furniture. It works best if you start with bare wood. If you have a furniture piece that is already painted a dark color and you want to try this method, I recommend that you sand the piece before beginning. At least get the shiny layer off the furniture.

I tried your method and was quite pleased with the result. Then cold weather descended on our part of east Tennessee and made spray painting impossible. I decided to try Minwax Wood Finish solid color water based stain (no fumes) in pure black for my undercoat. After applying, I wiped immediately to expose some of the wood grain so it wasn't a deep black but had undertones of darkened wood and after painting and sanding was very pleased. This will be my method going forward since it can be applied indoors. I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. Thank you. Oh, one more thing. I think pocket holes are just fine. I use them frequently and have never had an issue.

Love your channel, all of your projects are "basic " ( easy to make) yet beautiful by being basic it gives it a more realistic rustic looks, most other videos i have seen they use super expensive fancy tools that most people can't afford or be willing to buy for a project, or others that simply screw everything together and looks cheap, i like doing this as a hobby, i am learning a lot from you keep up the good work.

Hey Matt! After you distress the wood, do you still put that same finish over the top of it? It seems you put 2-3 coats on many projects. Wasn’t sure about the distressed ones. Thanks again for all your vids. I guess I found another vid where you don’t say “pokit-ho”!🙃😂

A palm sander will be much harder to use but it’ll work.

Matt, I’m a new woodworker and new subscriber to your channel. I loved how easy you made this look and tried it today. I used Rustoleum primer and paint spray in espresso (my local store only had the primer/paint combo)... that went fine, but when I applied my top coat using a white Valspar oil enriched enamel specifically made for furniture it had a lot of bleed through, but was mostly white. I figured I’d just add another coat tomorrow, but when I checked on it two hours later, it looked like the white paint was never applied... my table top was 100% espresso. I’m stumped. Ever seen anything like that before?

Use a water based paint for your top paint coats. Make sure the spray paint is completely dry before applying the white

@@731Woodworks Thanks for the reply, brother! The spray paint was left to dry for two days so I’m good there. I’ll try a water based top coat next. Sounds like that’s where I went wrong. Thanks again!

Matt, I finished my first woodworking project today, with your help! I took your advice on the water based top coat and the crafting desk I made for my wife came out looking great. I wasn’t planning on distressing it until I found your video (didn’t know how) and was gonna go with plain white. Thank you again. I follow a bunch of wood workers, but find myself on your channel the most. Looking forward to trying out your ship lap project soon. Maybe the kitchen cabinets too. Thanks for making wood working approachable for newbies like me!

Or lacquer spray is not oil based?
