  • On the twelfth episode of Listen, Argue, Repeat, Michael and Ryan share songs that surely elicit different types of reactions from each other. Ryan shares a song with Michael from a band he is actually familiar with...and Michael shares a song from a metal band that Ryan has never heard. Let's just say Ryan didn't handle it well

Dude needs to show some respect just because it's not his taste he shouldn't freely disrespect such a talented band and vocalist

I love the hell out of Jinjer. I found this guy's Creed song to be as stimulating and memorable as a glass of warm milk. His attitude towards Jinjer is very disrespectful and condescending.

You can Rick Roll someone or you can Jinjer Pisces them! 🤣
🔥Welcome to Jinjer, Ryan! And thank you Michael! I just found your channel, saw your Jinjer reaction and subbed, great reaction, except for Ryan claiming objectivity (no such thing exists regarding musical taste) and disparaging people who like Jinjer and other harsh vocals. I recently heard someone ask, why would any singer choose to use harsh vocals? The answer is simple: as a tool of expression just like any other musical instrument, but especially for expressing certain emotions, most usually anger, pain or both.
Thank you both for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, how down to earth they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics!
The first time I heard Pisces in 2019, I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wake up alarm for a few years and I still love it more every time I hear it, snooze is a thing of the past).
TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂
Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs!
My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣
All four current members of Jinjer have essentially no formal musical training except Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the latest album Wallflowers. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs.
Jinjer has been a tour-heavy band, touring almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020 and much of the time since then (with interruptions by covid and the US backed coup/proxy war), hard work that has made them fantastic live performers. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk) in 2008 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members and you can see their former guitarist turned actor, Dmitry Oksen, in older videos on guitar and a more recent video (Disclosure) playing an interrogator.
One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, Dip A Sail, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that could do well together in one reaction if you're so inclined).
I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken 2019, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official is the studio audio with some great footage from several shows), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video).
Thank you both! Ryan, I hope you'll keep trying out more Jinjer songs and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

Well, that was reaction hilarious enough for to not argue with Ryan about all his arguable statements :)
Maybe, as a smart person, he'll think more about it, if he'd know that experienced listeners are actually understand the words while the singer is growling. Especially in Jinjer's singer case because she's known by her exceptional enunciation while she's using extreme vocal.

I agree with this whole comment. I understand there are people who can understand and love that vocal delivery....I'm just not one of them. If the song connects with you, that's what matters. I really do appreciate you checking us out - Ryan

Dude it's one thing to say "it's not my thing I don't like it". People can respect that kind of opinion because everyone has their preferences in music but when you start going after other people for putting music on their playlist because they do like it and suggest they're inferior somehow for doing so, that's you presuming you know better than anyone who liked the video, bought the records and went to the concerts. Who the Hell are you to do that? I was a professional musician and sound engineer for 20 years. I admire everyone in this band for their talent.
This band and this song is not crap, vocals included. Stay in your lane buddy. You aren't the smartest person in the room or the be-all end-all on what's good in music. If it's not for you fine. People have been saying they don't understand modern music lyrics for decades. That fact has even been the subject of comedy bits. Clean, growl or otherwise. Harsh vocals are part of the genre. If you don't like the genre just say so instead of smearing the singers who sing it the way it's supposed to be sung. If you can't understand right away because you aren't used to them get a lyric sheet and don't be an ass to people who do understand them. You certainly have no business analyzing the song lyrics based on bits and pieces you manage to pick out.
Not that you deserve an explanation but. The symbol for Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions. In this case one kind and happy go lucky the other dark and running towards death. Emeralds symbolize a fish's scales in these lyrics and are being ripped away like innocence and protection from someone who might appear tough on the outside but vulnerable on the inside. The song is about the duality of being a Pisces. If you weren't too busy being an ignorant dick you might have gleaned that.
This video has over 85 million views and tons of reactions on TH-cam. Respectful reactions by people many who have never heard metal or those kinds of vocals before then. 99.9% of them go read the lyrics and attempt to understand and aren't abusive assholes over it. So how about you put your big boy pants on and realize that the world has more to it than your little corner of it?

Thanks for the comment and the background on the lyrics. I appreciate the time you spent on explaining them. I clearly struck a nerve with my reaction to this song. The musicians are talented, which I mentioned, and when she sang, I thought it was great. I appreciate your checking us out and would love to hear your thoughts on our other episodes.

i can't even figure out what you thought i meant 🤷‍♂ (maybe you need to google what "cast pearls before swine" means???)
(and then i also realized mid-post that that is also the name of another Jinjer song, and thought that was a funny coincidence)

Sorry, but this is far from crap. You may not like it and that is okay, but that does not mean others can not. If you are going to be this disrespectful towards someone's art, I can assure I will never watch anything else of yours. Good day.

I appreciate you checking us out Mark. I believe everyone is entitled to their own art. At the end of the day, these artists are successful and I can respect that. My music hasn't been, so they got me there. I joke about not taking feedback, but I do appreciate yours. Thank you man - Ryan.

Through Dud's limited outlook he can't just understand that this song is deep, it's about duality of senses, worlds, feelings and the extreme vocal shows it... 😢

Harsh vocals aren't crap. Also she's very understandable. You can't understand it because you're not trying to and aren't use to it. Don't disrespect a band because it's not your taste. Arch Enemy and Jinjer have MILLIONS of fans for a reason. You're just showing how little you actually understand music. Even people like Elizabeth from charasmatic voice who is an opera singer was such a fan that she got Tatiana from Jinjer and Alissa from Arch Enemy on her channel for interviews. Good Lord you're dense. That being said, i hope one day you can open your mind a little grow as a person and enjoy things that you're not use to or at least appreciate them. But until then, good day.
