How is this for a memory? Was watching this very episode of Kenny Everett and didn't know Numan was on the show. This came on and I went berserk watching it! The Kenny Everett Video Show was on during the week and on the Saturday I got the bus into Manchester city centre, ran to the HMV store and asked for it. Said 'its not on release, but he has released this new song 'We Are Glass'! Strange what you remember. So he premiered this on the Kenny Everett Show, then days later released We are Glass, and weeks later, released a cleaned up version of I Die You Die.
I would have loved to have sat down and witnessed that! I don't care what anyone says, to me the weird effects and Gary's appearance and mannerisms will always be darkly futuristic. This video is a prime example :)
I’m fairly sure this was recorded for the Kenny Everett New Years Eve 1979 show. Bowie spat his dummy out because he didn’t want Numan on the same show, so instead it got shunted to a slot in March 80. A real shame that, because I was watching the NYE show at a party and would have freaked out if Numan had turned up on it - I was a mad keen 15 year old Numanoid at the time.
Almost the same thing happened to me. I was 15 at the time and watched The Kenny Everett show religiously (we all talked about the show at school). I saw it advertised that Numan was going to be the next show and caught it on TV when it aired. Like you, I was surprised that We Are Glass was the next single because I was excited to hear I Die You Die again (very few people had VCRs back then to record with).
@@retro1980x - Bowie was an influential figure at the time. It was after the Kenny Everett incident that Radio 1 started to severely limit Numan's airplay. It killed his career. No one will ever convince me that Bowie didn't have a part to play in their actions.
This version of the song is brilliant,I wish it was available commercially on CD or vinyl, perhaps we will get it when Beggars Banquet release the promised Rarities CD ..... Numan ruled the world in those days,oh happy memories....
was watching a re run of Kenny E last saturday (29/10/22). Saw this version and was IMPRESSED!!!!. Can't recall having seen it back in 1980 so it came as a very pleasant surprise.
I saw it on Everett's show in April 1980 if I recall correctly. I expected it to be the next track to be released but instead We are Glass was released a few months later and I Die You Die was finally released in August 1980. Its a great tune.
I suspected Bowie was a bit of a jumped up prick and finding all this out about how he treated Numan, confirms it. Hope his nearest and dearest don’t mind me having a similar wanky name in a form of an alias. Tut tut.
Would be great if the audio master tape of this version of i die you die were released, it is so different to the version released in 1980 but i guess it is long lost.....
I agree with you. In fact, I think this version might actually be superior to the album/single release. There is a certain urgency to it that is not found in the original version.
This song was about the shitty criticism he was getting off twat journalist at the time and the statement being I Die You Die in other words if we were not here (the artist) then you as a journalist would not be here and you would be dead in the water if not for the artist.
+Yul Hubbart it's 'gay'... I'm gay, love him no matter what his orientation was back then... I know he's been married a long time... just meant that stylistically it all looked like Bowie & Kraftwerk...
Bowie and his professional envy and jealousy? Numan was king of the hill at the time and clearly borrowed from The Thin White Duke persona. Talent borrows and genius steals.
For me this was the pinnacle of the original Numan persona, wonderful stuff.
Amazing to think this was basically a demo from Sept 79 when he was at no1 with cars.
Every version of this song is great to me.
Amazing song love his voice and style and the way he presents himself is original and best 💖🌹

@@nxj9956 Bowie showed weakness and envy when Numan turned up!

Still one of my favourite tracks
Way ahead of his time. Brilliant.

True: I've always liked this version and it's a pity it wasn't released - but, yeah, maybe it will be.
Ooohhh those phasers.man this is a great version.
Best version ever.
How cool can someone be? No cooler than Gary in this vid.....or the actual I Die: You Die promo itself. God, I had damn good taste as an 8 year old!!
Absolutely brilliant!
Station boys keep their hands on steel. Tubeway days now seem quite unreal.
Gary at his prime...pure Numan magic!
I love this version, shame it isn't released anywhere else.
Even though he was late to the party electric music wise, it is nice that he brought it to the main stream.
One of Numan's finest moments.
I remember watching this
I remember watching this on Kenny Everett Show all those years ago

Numan is a legend
Numan at the height of his powers
And his newest Album Intruders has just been released at age 63
Filmed at Thame s televison studio,s Teddington. Same studio as The Tomorrow people....studio 2.
Excellent stuff - This is the best quality recording i have seen :)
I got hooked on his music in 1979 and never looked back. I bought all his 8 tracks. I am kicking myself for not buying his albums!
Always preferred this version to the one released
Best version - because it doesn't have the clapping!
This is the show where Bowie was in the wings throwing all kinds of disdain at Gazza. Always wondered why Bowie hated him so much.
Envy.

Cocaine
Epic Numan.....Punk with Synths !
You know its good if Everett is telling people not to watch it....
Flashes of the band now and again, but is anyone playing the drum kit at the back? Looks like Cedric is missing!
Toilet break

Is this version available anywhere?

Bowie bought back major tom because he saw numan taking his mantle
WHAHAHA! Awesome Numan. NUMAN IS!
Superstar
NUUUUUUUUUMAAAAAAAN

I like my Gary Numan gay! He's so uniquely the spooky English popstar!!! Luv Numan in these years... pure genius, great song
He is so gay that he has three daughters and a beautifull wife. One daughter sing with Numan in the video "My name is ruin"
+Yul Hubbart it's 'gay'... I'm gay, love him no matter what his orientation was back then... I know he's been married a long time...
just meant that stylistically it all looked like Bowie & Kraftwerk...
That was the day of the bowie “fall out”

Yuck! What's wrong with Gary's face, why is grimacing like that? He looks so silly.
it is special effects huh !
This comment made me laugh
He had a spat with Bowie.
Brilliant
