I remember a newspaper here in Australia said Gary was a poor man’s David Bowie which made me so angry that I still haven’t bought that particular newspaper since . That was in the early 80’s . I don’t forgive or forget .
i was 15 in 1979 & his 1st appearance on TOTP was as big a thing at our school as the 1st Pistols’ appearance 2 years previously. he out-did the lot of those chart acts by being outside the pop or punk or new wave or disco king or rock cliques whilst bringing probably the coolest act of the 2nd half of the decade to the show since Bowie or Bolan before . watching this video has been an inspiration because I’ve experienced those same challenges Gary has lived with my take on the world & those filling it on a sometimes overwhelming basis is soo familiar. Bless the guy & his loved ones 😁👍🐢👽❤️
The British press absolutely hated him but fortunately it just made the fans ( me) just love him more! I’ve seen him live many times over the years including being devastated at Wembley in 81 when he decided to retire. I’m waiting patiently for May where he will be playing Glasgow with The pleasure Principle and Replicas albums. I can’t believe at the age of sixty I’m still able to go watch Gary Numan live. First concert. The Pleasure principle tour Glasgow Apollo, my first concert and his first live appearance. ❤🖤❤️🖤
the NME for instance would groom & hype their own discovery or scene . they’d jump on a cool bandwagon & be its champion until as DG says get bored then the act or scene was doomed. In 1980 the NME was as powerful as The Sun or Der Spiegel but in rock music terms & the NME was overtly Left wing .Gary Numan caught them all out by appearing to come out of nowhere ! Phil Oakley spoke of he & his band & electro loving mates being shocked when Gary had first reached the singles chart & appeared on bbcs Top of the Pops the same week - they’re in front of their tv going ‘ wtf - who is this ?’ although he & Human League unlike the music press wasn’t negative whatsoever re Garys’ music or success .
He had a rough time off the press at the time but in the end he won he's the king off synth and puts today's music to shame I was nine when cars hit no one still one my favourite songs 45 years later.👌
I got into synths and bought a Moog because of Gary :) I would say there was some kind of influence there :) I remember getting my hands on a Mini Freak synth and the first thing I programmed was a poly Moog type sound! guess what! Someone criticised me! asked me why are you trying to make Gary Numan sounds out of this modern machine! So un-original and old! I’m like ‘I wouldn’t be into synths if I didn’t listen to Numan! and when I mess with a machine, Gary sounds will always be a blueprint to me as a starting point and I have fun doing it’ plus, I was annoyed with people complaining as I have the skills to programme!!! thought they would appreciate my efforts :) I create other sounds as well! I’m open to try everything :) but Gary’s sounds always the ones that started it all for my synth passion
I'd love to speak to that journalist who wrote, "no-one of any worth would be influenced by Gary Newman" and see what they have to say for themselves now!
What a legend. I confess to shedding a tear at the end. Third row and centre at the first Wembley gig, missed the second unfortunately, Australia is just a little too far out. He played as big a role in my teen years as anyone could. Truly someone to aspire to. Deepest respect Gary. You are a true legend.
What a fantastic video one of the best I've ever seen on TH-cam.iam 64 years old so I grew up with gary and his amazing music was absolutely fantastic.keep going Gary and what a beautiful and lovely family you have . Thank you Rab Scottish borders
Just saw him with FLA and Ministry a few weeks ago in Toronto. What a show he put on. I feel embarrassed that I never stayed connected with him. Ran out and bought two CDs the day after to support the cause.
This doc was brilliant!! Been a fan since 79, saw him in Toronto March 16, amazing show! I can just imagine all the emotions running through his mind before he went on stage at Wembley, I cried to!! so happy for him, the man is amazing!!❤❤
Very touching at the end of the documentary when Gemma is comforting him before he gets on stage. I wonder if his mum Beryl had to do the same during his younger years...
Thank you for posting this! I've been searching for it 😊 an awesome documentary about Gary, his work, history & amazing family ❤ Oh his wife Gemma is a REAL 💎 GEM! Thank you again!
Bullied at school....and in crap jobs...teacher said....working class...kids cannot become pilots.....so he got the money by becoming a pop star..to prove them wronge.❤❤❤❤
Gary numan is like ozzy Osborne one offs . Although ozzy nearly killed himself with addiction. As an old goth talking here, Gary sings the anthems to our weird n wonderful lives.❤❤
I totally get it. I was born in 1957 and knew at an early age that I was different. It never concerned me much I just did what I had to do to get through. Fast forward to 2022 and I am 65. I had spent my adult life as a graphics/branding designer and was a bit depressed in semi-retirement because I needed the projects to be happy. Not for the money but the creative outlet. After some time seeing a therapist he suggested I take a test. As it turns out I have high functioning autism. As soon as I heard this it made sense. I consider myself fortunate to have been born this way yet I am glad I didn't know I was autistic when I was young as it may have given me pause with somethings that I did such as Porsche Racing. I would have has self imposed limitsthat may have held me back. Thanks Gary.
I love him but never seen him live . I wish he would do a ASD friendly show. thats on early and held outside of busy citys . I have ASD and I know Garry has too. But i find busy noisy places too much for me to cope with .
John Foxx Metamatic matches or betters older Numan albums , very underrated , and also the real godfather of synthesiser music mixed with guitars , before Numan , with Ultravox .
@@garynumansunconvincingwig2435 I liked up to Savage, but to be honest I'm bored with that heavy NIN sound. Like yourself it doesn't resonate with me. I would like to see a change in direction, a less headbanging predictable album, but I don't think he will ever tier of that heavy sound. It just doesn't do it for me anymore. After the last save the planet Thunberg politics album, in reality we all know was a manufactured in China virus, not the planet fighting back . I thought some of the songs on that album sounded like two different songs put together, and those same overused noise effect samples are so predictable, I would say 60% of the music is samples .
Gemma worked wonders and thank god the crap over America type pop period went. Those awful women on ya songs gone thankfully. Now with others voices on the tracks it helps to give us your true music soul. ❤❤❤❤❤
1:12:54 - ooh, that was awkward. He has some serious hang ups and actually thinks his new crap is relevant or somehow better than anything he made prior to 1986. Total delusion.
If this was from 2023, why is it such bad quality? Any link to a good version? Meanwhile this BBC docu is worth a look th-cam.com/video/UIy-isLTIoE/w-d-xo.html
He WAS awesome , but the label goth made him make boring music since the 90s , it's understandable as a pension move but artistically he is stagnant now since a loooong time.
Agreed, hasn't wrote anything interesting since 1986. He basically lives in his own bubble afraid to move or do anything without holding Ade Fenton's dick.
I was a fan of Gary’s from 1981-1998. After that he got stuck in a giant NIN loop. He abandoned his fans for a new fan base. He is a shell of what he used to be and his band sucks!!! 😫
Wembley didn't finish his career the music did after Dance which was a top 5 album. He's NEVER said in any interview prior to this that Wembley is the bench mark. Take everything he says with a pinch of salt because it's mostly utter drivel.
Brilliant documentary, Brilliant, brilliant Gary Numan. Been a fan since 1979. You've so important to many of us❤
Gary is an amazing artist! As a teenager I liked CARS! Everything else is just as great! #WayCoolGaryNuman 💯💣
I remember a newspaper here in Australia said Gary was a poor man’s David Bowie which made me so angry that I still haven’t bought that particular newspaper since . That was in the early 80’s . I don’t forgive or forget .
Love yer since I saw you on top of the pop's 1979 ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Saw him in 1979 and will be going in 2024. Love him
Thanks to gorgeous garys lovely wife gemma she saved him bless her
Saw this doc on public tv recently. Thanks for sharing. Grew up with his music, great stuff.

Why was he hated by the British press ?
Fuck the Press...😊
@@Personal_Jesus_DM I think he said some things in support of the Tory party plus his music style was divisive to the established music journos

I'm sure I saw in shop in Braintree Essex. In the early 90s.

I loved this

Metamatic was a great album. I love it. He however never wrote friends. Underpass was a poor immitation. And as for Europe after the rain
