The classic controller was mainly designed for virtual console but it is compatible with a handful of Wii games such as Monster Hunter. The one you got in the box is just black version of the controller. The goldeneye remake uses it and it came with a gold variant

Yep - I have two for playing classic, virtual console games through the Wii channel on the Wii U. Though yours is nicer than mine as it has the handles, but they work the same way.

Wonderful to hear PoodlePa got into gaming through Pikmin 3. It's a great choice.
Also, I love the Twilight Princess music throughout the video. It's the first Zelda game I ever finished, so it holds a very special place in my heart.
Thanks for showing us your collection, Britta!

Watching this on Christmas only made seeing these all the more nostalgic. Wii U was a surprisingly special console to me, and I found some stellar titles therein. I did NOT expect to sink literal hundreds of hours into Hyrule Warriors, but it introduced me to a whole new genre of games I never knew I loved! Wind Waker HD is one of those parts that still drops my jaw. What an improvement graphically from the Gamecube! And I'm with you on Twilight Princess: it's quirky, but it's got an incredible cast. THANK YOU for defending Rune Factory Frontier - the art is timeless, the music gorgeous, and it's still my favorite in the series. If it's ported, I would weep with joy. Also, I never get to hear people talk about Little King's Story, but it was criminally underrated. So clever and charming!

Pikmin 3 is amazing. I still play it regularly on my Wii U. It is beautiful and it's always heart-wrenching when something goes bad and your Pikmin go down in the line of duty. 😆

At the moment, there's a winter storm rolling through the area so I'm kinda stuck inside the house at the moment. I got bored earlier tonight and remembered that I bought Atelier Sophie for the Switch about 3 months ago and haven't opened it until now. I popped it in and absolutely fell in love with it. So naturally when I was done for the night, I got onto TH-cam. I searched for videos on the Atelier series and I came across your channel. Eventually I came to the video titled "How I got into gaming." I just wanted to say that your video brought me to tears because over the past year, my life too has been completely flipped upside down. Gaming has always been my escape, and it's been important to me especially this past year. While you don't specifically talk about what was troubling you and your family at the time, I'm deeply touched that you found an outlet to reach your own catharsis. Your video was inspiring and genuine on the topic of therapy and acceptance during depression. Thank you for being awesome. You've earned my sub to your channel and I wish you the best.

While the Wii was my first console, the Wii U is when I really got to experience more game series like Pikmin and Legend of Zelda... and I've always cherished those memories. My younger brother has kept the Wii U so I no longer have access to it, but I sometimes find myself missing those days.

Unbelievable it’s been 10 years. I remember my friend next door selling his Wii to scrape up the money to buy a Wii U. We would play Mario Kart 8 for hours.
After falling into a depression during the pandemic I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and quickly fell in love with the game. So naturally I picked up Xenoblade 2 and it’s DLC after that to fall in love all over again. 16 months after beating Xenoblade 2, I had beaten Xenoblade 3, I was long out of my depression with some of my absolute favorite gaming experiences.
So I figured, with the eShop closing down in a few months there was no better time to crack down and get a Wii U with Xenoblade X. It’s being held back as a Christmas gift but I hope to be saying you’re words: “I’m glad I got a Wii U, if only for that game.”

I love that someone likes artbooks as much as me! I never really got into drawing until I was in my 30s because I have bad eyesight and I really wanted to draw some videogame characters so I finally did and I enjoy drawing characters from games all the time. Because of this I appreciate the work put into art direction for games and get artbooks for my most favorite games.

Thanks for sharing - as always it's very interesting to listen to your videos. Many others have such detailed analysis or flashy stuff, which is all well and fine, but it just makes yours seem to have this very candid feeling that I very much appreciate, something more down to earth and relatable on a personal level. Kind of reminds me more of a vlog, just something pleasant while I have my (late) morning coffee.
Lots of Zelda to talk about here in particular...can't say I've ever heard of those Teddy games, but from what you've shown I'm almost reminded of a mix of Hollowknight and Cave Story, probably a few others I'm not thinking of, but it kind of makes sense considering how much crossover there are between these games and what inspires them. Zelda 2 is not my favorite but I feel is better than many give it credit for, and hope one day it's one that gets a remake to iron out some issues. Twilight Princess, on the other hand, well...let's just say I'm not very fond of it, unfortunately. Perhaps it has more to do with some of the hype up until it was originally released, as well as some of the culture around it, specifically with people badmouthing Wind Waker in comparison to it at the time. I can't help but feel it was pretty much the antithesis to it, even as I got caught up in some of the hype myself, and it came and I was just so overwhelmingly disappointed in the overall experience of it. Maybe I can appreciate more of its more subtle aspects now that I'm some years older, however in trying to go through the HD version, I just get so bored of it less than half way through. It's too bad because I do like some of the story and characters, but they all get neglected in the later half. It doesn't really help that what I'd expected from the game were the motion controls of Skyward Sword and the world design from Breath of the Wild, both things that wouldn't be until many years later. It's almost kind of ironic because the one thing I genuinely enjoyed of TP was the motion controlled fishing, something that I have not found in any game since then for some reason. You'd think that would be a no brainer, but I keep looking up games on the Switch before I buy them to try and see if they actually make use of the joycons. I can better understand what more people struggle with these days with motion controls, but it seems like such a waste to not offer them as an option now. Speaking of, I was not initially interested in the WiiU, until the HD version of Wind Waker was announced. Turns out it's not my preferred version, which I guess speaks just to how nitpicky I can be, but it really comes down to all the little things that make it my favorite game ever.
Coincidentally I was also not very interested in the Switch either, thinking it was really just more of the same and released far too soon after the WiiU(I guess I was one of few "true believers" that denied it being an outright failure) - that was until a new No More Heroes game was announced. I didn't care that it was technically a spin off, and we ended up getting a third game anyway, but in any case the series is one of my first really violent games and my introduction to Grasshopper as a developer of a lot of really experimental stuff, never mind me rooting more for underdogs than major companies. More importantly I feel the NMH series is one that uses motion controls very effectively, and without actually asking you to do so much. They can all be played with more traditional controls now on PC, unfortunately the ports of the first two games don't run very well from what I've heard. Just thought I'd make that sort of suggestion if you still shop around for Wii games. And if you like them, one that is sort of adjacent to them is Mad World, developed by the same folks as the Bayonetta games. Grasshopper also rereleased some old visual novels in one package, The Silver Case and the 25th Ward, for the Switch, if you want more of an in-depth but equally strange and out there story and characters.
Speaking more generally, one thing I really enjoyed about the WiiU was Miiverse. I'd had a tight knit group of friends back on the Xbox 360, kind of special to me to the point where I just don't want to play anything like multiplayer Halo anymore now we've gone our seperate ways in life, but Miiverse served a bit of a similar purpose for me for some time. Art Academy was one "game" on the WiiU that really got me back into art again, after many years of pretty severe depression sort of robbed me of any interest in my hobbies. In being able to share my art to Miiverse, to my surprise many people were very supportive, and seeing what amazing things other people could do with such limited stuff was always inspiring. Needless to say I was very sad to see it cut short, and I kind of hate that the Switch doesn't have anything like it. Some people tried to start up some forums where we could meet up after, but not many made it, and I lost contact with a lot of people I really enjoyed talking to. But then, these days, people kind of come and go, and I guess part of growing up is realizing life is just like that sometimes and you have to enjoy the time you have with them. These days I've got myself a "big boy" art tablet and program, probably still not using to the best of their capabilities because I simply prefer old fashioned pen and paper, but I've made a lot of progress and may even have some paid work soon. Even if it's not much, it's more than I could have hoped for. Just wish Deviantart and twitter were as nice to me and others as Miiverse was for artists.
As far as older games go, well...I've gotten a bit lazy, simply hoping they'll all be rereleased eventually...even if it's not a practice I necessarily like now. I mean, the Wii had the best Virtual Console, way ahead of this awful subscription service Nintendo is trying to push now, which I refuse to give any support to. Thankfully more than a fair few have come to Steam at least. However, there's Xenoblade Chronicles X, which while I don't like the battle system, exploring the world was always fun, if not a bit too intimidating with large scary creatures(especially the flying puffer fish things), or Devil's Third, a game I felt got unfairly treated just because of how difficult it is...someday I will beat it lol. Moreover I'm a bit afraid of hooking up my older consoles after many years, just in case it turns out they no longer work. Kind of defeats the purpose but psychologically it's just less stuff I have to deal with right now, if that makes sense...I did hook up my WiiU again October before last, though; it was to play and finish my first horror game. Well, Grasshopper has some of what I'd call "horror-likes", and I've watched playthroughs of many Resident Evils, Silent Hills, Evil Within's, etc., but Fatal Frame V was my first time going through one myself, and I'm pretty proud of that. Coincidentally, a port of the 4th one I believe is being rereleased sometime soon, and it just so happens Grasshopper codeveloped it, so I'm excited to try it out eventually.
Well, I've gone on long enough for now. There were some other things I thought I'd mention, but they'd make this way too long and I can't find a good way to segway into them and still remain coherent. So that's that. :P Thanks again for your video!

I wasn't aware of the motion controls in NMH. I bought the games 1+2 for Switch recently but haven't played yet.
The Silver Case and the 25th Ward I bought many years ago on the PS4.
Fatal Frame is another series I hope to start playing and exploring quite soon.

I was playing Breath of the Wild while listening to this video - I wonder why anyone would think the Wii U version would be inferior to the Switch version - I also hear people say that about Persona 5 for the PS3, and a lot of people where joking about about how terribly the Switch port of P5 would run on the Switch. If a game is made with a specific console in mind it usually runs great on it! Persona 5 is a PS3 game and the fact that some people think the Switch wouldn't be able to run a PS3 game properly is really rather silly
Also I really hope that Xenoblade Chronicles X gets a port or a remaster eventually since it looks right up my alley, but I can't justify buying a Wii U just for one game. I'm keepinf my fingers crossed 🤞🏼

I still can't believe the Wii U is ten years old now. We didn't have many games for it, but what we had was good stuff and of course the Wii backwards compatibility was very welcome. That's how I ended up playing The Last Story because our Wii had died by the time I really dove into it. Lovely game. I recommend giving it another go now you’re so much more experienced. It’s not as long as a lot of jrpgs either so not as massive of a time sink.
I played both Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD. Twilight Princess HD was my third version of the game having had and played the GCN and Wii versions too. I still remember getting my HD copy a day early; thank you post! and being ready to dive right back in there for my fourth or fifth time :D. I'm currently replaying Wind Waker; Twilight Princess may be next or at least coming. My last time was when it came out for Wii U. Both games are favourites of mine from the series along with Breath of the Wild.
Regarding Metroid Other M, difficulty is subjective as we all know, but personally I think I found it easier than others I've played with a big however. That being I found the controls awkward and uncomfortable. You have to use the Wiimote horizontally except during points when you go into first person view and point the controller at the screen. And I have other subjective issues like narrative, but everyone will have their own views.
I forgot about Dragon Quest Swords. I had it but never finished it. Definitely a spin-off title. It was first person with a bit more action-oriented combat. I feel like it was more on rails too, but I don't remember for sure.
Thank you for this look back, Britta!

my favorite wii game....thats a tough one. I did heavily enjoy Super Paper Mario, not so much the gameplay though, the story and writing are top notch hilarity and it's funny how the game expects you to use a walkthrough at points, playing with that sort of thing is really creative.

23:08 I personally liked Other M, was playing Samus Returns on 3DS last night. I think the main gripe that people had was they were waiting years for a traditional 2D Metroid title but Other M attempted to bridge the two styles of gameplay. If you wanted to try out the Metroid series, I would say you’d probably do better with either Super Metroid on SNES or Metroid Fusion on GBA (both are available on Wii U VC).

clipping through the monster is supposed to happen in monster hunter. it only really happens after the monster dies when you go to carve it, otherwise the monster has collision boxes. It includes The Last Story (which makes sense) and NOT Pandora's Tower (which also makes sense). Remember that little green "search" spot in my video? As another viewer here pointed out, games with that type of motion control generally do not work with the classic controller.
But honestly, to be completely sure, I'd have to test them all properly. 😀
