  • If you've ever wondered where a good number of my computers come from, it's usually from places like this. in this episode, I dumpster dive an E-Waste center for laptops and other neat tech, and look for computers at a neighbourhood-wide garage sale event in my city.

    Those Omnikey keyboards are just as good, if not better than Model Ms. They are considered the epitome of Alps switch keyboards. You lucked out with the Optiples 990. Most of the time they take the drive caddies when they pull the hard drives. Overall it looks like a nice haul.
    And hope the MacBook doesn't need a Louis Rossmann treatment.

    • @davidokeif8304
      @davidokeif8304 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rossmann did a video on how to fix those old mac laptops that act slow. IIRC if the sensors detect an issue they slow down like that to prevent damaging the machine.

    Damn, I wish my local waste collector would let me do this.

    They literally made a fuzz about a 20cm SATA cable, so I gave up on asking if I can climb inside the container.

Most of the problems are trivial (big one is bad HDD) or fixable with some glue and are otherwise fine (5 separate machinrs all have damaged hinge mounts, bezel, and frame). Of course, a few are probably lost causes, but that's not common.

      E-waste centers generally have either a hard-line "no picking" policy, in which case you're out of luck, or they're small enough to have very minimal policies. It's the small ones with no clear rules on picking that are most likely to say "don't see why not" and let you have a go at it.

      Enormous influx of people from all over the city (and elsewhere) into what is usually 2 square kilometers of single family homes. Just look at the number of people in the video, and you should get a sense for it. There simply isn't the infrastructure in the area to support what is easily a 100x increase in cell phone traffic with way more people and all of them on their phones for communication with others, and it just knocks everything offline. I think I saw a truck from a carrier with antennas on it which may have been for analysis or some kind of temporary GSM tower, but if that's what it was it went offline just as quickly as everything else. It's like Ottawa's annual involuntary GSM DDOSing event.

    Just a random question. Do you have to pay to take things from the ewaste places?

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never had one ask me for money, however I usually do pay them a small amount or compensate for the weight of the items taken with my own e-waste (since their payment is based on a set value per pound of hardware collected). Some of my friends take stuff without any kind of payment or weight compensation, and I don't know of any case where they have run into problems.

  • @playdust3226
    @playdust3226 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you get all that stuff for free then and are you meant to take stuff? In England you are not allowed to

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's basically nowhere you're supposed to, but whether or not you are allowed to take stuff from E-Waste is totally dependent on who's running it. Some companies have strict policies against it, some are OK with you taking some items but not others, some don't want you to take hard drives, some (usually smaller organizations, like the school running this one) are fine with you taking whatever you want but would probably get annoyed if you started taking CRT TVs and monitors (they are paid by weight, so a laptop is worth absolutely nothing to them and an old TV is extremely valuable). It's just a matter of asking them if they're OK with it. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes no. If they say no, you can sometimes ask for reasoning, but often the person there isn't knowledgeable enough to provide that (they didn't write the rule, and it's not their fault) and will just give you a blanket "no, we cannot allow you to take anything". Usually has to do with user data privacy, but whoever enacted the rule has no idea what hard drives are, so they just say no.

    • @playdust3226
      @playdust3226 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay well you are lucky to be able to take things from some places because where I live its agains the law to take stuff from any where and also if you ask any of the companies they just don't allow it because of government policy

    • @Dodoid
      @Dodoid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the place lets you take stuff, then that's their choice to make. If they choose not to, I wouldn't risk it, since dumpster diving appears to fall in a weird sort of grey area and that may get even weirder if the waste had decent monetary value and they are operating the collection point in order to make money, as is often the case with e-waste. Honestly, I've never really looked into the legality of taking stuff when they say no, as I'd rather not bother it's FAR easier to just find one that says yes. I am not a lawyer, and even if I were I would probably just say to go find one that lets you.

      That's great. I am 17 and love computers a lot. Too bad there aren't any huge e-waste places in winnipeg. I get most of my stuff from back alleys and the school division as well as friends and neighbours. Garage sales and thrift stores rarely have any interesting computer stuff here in winnipeg.

    should take more than just the 486, like pentium 1 to 3s, very useful for dos/9x gaming. Even the OEM dells can provide parts like hdd or optical drives. And that core2quad would of been perfect for high end XP era gaming. Should of rummaged through all the pcs for parts with a friend, never know what good stuff you can find in there!

    • @patg108
      @patg108 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      and while those CRTS aren't the most desireable in general they are perfect for dos to 9x era gaming on as that is what was intended to be used with them and ensures the best compatibility (some lcd has issues with too low of resolution). That atari monitor may well go to a atari microcomputer (anywhere from late 70s to early 90s)

    • @patg108
      @patg108 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And there is a few good reasons to want a CRT TV, old retro consoles (without modding), vcr, laserdisc etc. Also some microcomputers can output to them via composite or rf. Really the computer dumpster is where all the good stuff will be, esp if they'll let you take w/e you want. Some old sound and video cards can be valueable and same with thsoe eras of processors (for vintage builds)

      There's literally a entirely different and awesome world of awesomeness unlike anything else for pc gaming int he dos to 9X world, and even the 2k to XP world.

    Your lucky in the UK we can't dumpster dive it breaking the law you can ask for items from people before they dump it and take it off their hands and so on it love a apple pro and loads of hard drives and SLI gpus

    Another tip: those broken microwaves, printers and the like have a lot of useful electronic components like capacitors, motors and other useful stuff in them that can be used for future electronics projects/tinkering. And those capacitors come in handy when you need to recap an old PC/monitor that has bad caps.

    They will not let you dumpster dive in the E-Wast dumpsters around here, got away with it a few times before they started keeping the doors shut. Ohh and its a $350 fine or 10 days in jail if caught now!!!
