  • I often get laptops from e-waste, and when I do, they rarely come with the original power adapter. In order to test them without the original adapter, I use this Yihua bench power supply. This video explains how to hook a laptop up to a power supply like this.

    -- How I make my videos --
I use Final Cut Pro on my custom built Xeon E3 Hackintosh, and film with a Canon EOS 60D. I use a pair of large fluorescent studio lights for most of my work, but may use various other types if filming away from the room I usually film in. I have a really overfilled lab, which is usually where I dig up the tech seen in my videos.

Good explanation. If you just need to test laptops, you could buy the universal adapter that goes with those barrel jacks. Still, the power supply can be useful for many other things, so it all depends on one's needs.

IMO, this is far more useful, given that it can run anything from an 8.5v Chromebook to a 20v ThinkPad, with enough power for a higher-amperage gaming machine. It's just generally more versatile.

True. Some machines are picky, especially Dell laptops. My Precision M6400 might run from a 65 watt universal adapter, but the performance will definitely be throttled (and the computer will certainly complain). How much wattage could that bench supply put out?

What’s a good bench power supply on a budget that’s adjustable? And did you find out what’s wrong with the MacBook in your MacBook repair vid?

Unfortunately, the MacBook still doesn't work. I haven't had all that much time to get back to it, but what further diagnostics I have done haven't really told me anything other than "SMC's gone weird". As for what's actually causing it, I haven't a clue. Power supply wise, just look around and buy something that suits your needs. Do keep in mind that some beefier laptops (for example, an ASUS gaming laptop I used to have) will draw quite a lot of power, so a larger power supply capable of supplying more amps can be rather useful.

If you'd like to do this, and don't already have connector tips, I recommend you get this pack, as it includes the cable, AND has some of the more exotic connectors for stuff like older Samsung laptops, and especially the 3 and 4 pin connectors for the Latitude C Series and ThinkPad 760 series respectively!

I made a diy universal laptop charger by using a universal connector from Walmart for small gadgets that have laptop connectors and took a laptop charger and a charging port it works in, then I solder the Walmart connector to the charging port and connect it to my old laptops charger to use many other laptops including my old one

actually the voltage does not matter that much 12-20 volts is ok, the laptop self adjust to the provided voltage
