    Thank you for this super comprehensive video. I have a GoPro Hero 6 and a Tokani capture card and I wasn't seeing videos for my exact equipment, but seeing all the different ways you can possibly do it helped me figure it out. Thank you for dividing the video into sections. My obstacles were first figure out the way information and power are flowing through the connection loop, then what settings on the camera (I was still in photo mode and got my photos into OBS! needed Live in HDMI settings on the camera.) Then finding USB source for video in OBS and Zoom. My remaining confusions are: 1) What is the difference between the Live setting and the icon that looks like a Loop in video settings? I found another video setting that looks like it should put capture on a loop instead of start/stop, then found HDMI Live, and I think I'm using both settings, then 2) I have a Rode lapel mic I want to use with the GoPro and also a Logitech chat headset. OBS picks up the chat headset fine but I wish I could use the lapel mic. I plug the mic in the 3.5mm mic adapter and have the other port on the adapter connected to USB. Not sure if that USB connection is providing power to the camera continuously as I hoped. And software picks up Logitech headset but not the mic. Oh well, it's an optional puzzle to get better audio. I can stream! Thanks for your help!

      Thank you Teresa D. Lee! You just need HDMI set to Live. With regard to your lapel mic - there should be a mic port on your computer's sound card you need to select.

    I got a Hero 10 Black for Christmas and it got me interested in using it as a webcam for streaming from my gaming rig which of course didn’t have a built in cam. I had wrote off my old GoPro Hero 2 as a webcam because there just isn’t a direct way via software to get the image from the old Go Pro to the PC. Well I just watched your video tonight and it occurred to me, when I stream from my PC I’m not using my El Gato. I ran power to my Hero 2, ran HDMI to the El Gato, ran USB from the El Gato. Viola! Breathed some new life into my old cam and now I can focus my new Camera on bigger things!

But you do get audio and the media mod does have the hot shoe mount and slightly improved mics as well if that’s useful to you. And the capture card can be used with any camera with HDMI outputs so may get additional use?

    - do you really have to install the Webcam Desktop Utility on Mac
    - or is it outputting video via a USB Video Compliant protocol like the insta360 or the capture cards ?
    I would be fine with lacking some settings if I don't have to rely on their utility.

    If you already have a Gopro, well OK try it as a webcam if you want, but the video lag a is terrible. I bought the Hero 8 specifically to use as a high quality webcam. I thought spending over €500 on a Lumix G100 just to much to spend to get better quality Skype video. No-one, but absolutely no-one mentioned how laggy the Gopro is, had any review or TH-cam video bothered to add that improtant piece of information, I would not have bought the Gopro, as it was the annoying lag when using my Logitech C920 that was bugging me. The Gopro lag is much much worse (although the picture quality is better). Allso firmware and software is up to date and I bought a new USB cable as the short, cheap and nasty USB 2 cable supplied with the Gopro just doesn't work in webcam mode.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are definitely far better options and I absolutely wouldn't buy a GoPro just as a webcam. Apart from anything else it doesn't currently have audio. But webcams have been quite difficult to source this last year and this video is really intended to help if you already have a webcam. I personally couldn't get hold of one early on when I needed one the most. And with a capture card you do get audio and about the same lag as any other webcam. But unfortunately the latest GoPros require the Media Mod kit to get HDMI for use with a capture card.

      @@TheTechnologyMan I have no issues with the video quality, it's very good. If there are any webcams with such good quality I would be interested to know about them. As far as audio is concerned, I wouldn't use the Gopro audio even if it was available, I have high quality microphones and Audient EVO 4 interface for that. My issue with the reviews on YT and so on, is that the lag is never mentioned and as it is worse than a €50 webcam, it is, I think, worthy of comment. Yes I know about the grossly overpriced Media Mod and that it has an HDMI port, but what is the lag out of this port? As the signal is receive through the USB port I suspect it is equally laggy, but I would like to know if this so without spending €90 to find out.
