Wirelessly Stream GoPro Hero 7/8/9 to OBS Studio, VLC, Computers, etc.

  • Why use a capture card when you can wirelessly stream your GoPro Hero 7/8 to your computer using an RTMP server. MonaServer is a FREE open source program that creates a RTMP service that your GoPro can connect to and stream the live video. While there is a little delay for the footage to arrive, a lot of possibilities are here.
If you get an error message saying your rtmp address is incorrect, add “/live” to the end of the address. (Without the quotation marks)
You can also try adding just the “/“ to the end of your rtmp address if you get an invalid address error. (Without the quotation marks)
If you have problems connecting to MonaServer, your firewall (Windows Defender or alternative) may be preventing MonaServer from Accessing Port 1935 on your computer. (See Below for more details)
If VLC Video Source isn't available in OBS, you can try adding Media Source. In the Media Source settings, uncheck the "Local File" box and in the Input section, add your RTMP address there. I haven't really used option, so can't speak further on the other settings. I've heard that using the Media Source Option can help if you are having freezing issues using the VLC option.
    ################################
If you have problem connecting to your computer & use an iPhone, Go to Settings on your iPhone and look for the GoPro App settings, Make sure "Local Network" is turned ON so your phone can look for your computer

Another user, shooflypieordie, posted this and you may find it useful. Basically it says your firewall, (Windows Defender, etc) may prevent MonaServer from accessing Port 1935 on your computer.
    1) MonaServer likely needs to be given permission to communicate over PUBLIC networks rather than just private. If you don't do this your GoPro will be unable to stream to that port if you're on public wifi.
    2) I needed to make sure port 1935 was open and not blocked by windows defender or another antivirus.
    3) Although likely not necessary, I ended up specifying my rtmp server as "rtmp://YOUR_IP_ADDRESS:1935" which seemed to be more stable than leaving the port off the end.

I really appreciate how straight forward the tutorial was, no bs. I also really appreciate the tip about making sure the camera doesn't over heat by taking the battery out. I am doing my first cooking stream tomorrow, all my other equipment options have failed me so I picked up a Go Pro upgrade pretty last minute. The over heating thing definitely would've been something I found out the hard way tomorrow if you hadn't told me. Going to set myself up with a cord and my portable power bank instead. 👍🏻

Thanks Steve, I have an Osmo Action and I spent 15 euros on an application that doesn't work. You gave me fantastic advice. So I add one of my add-ons to your work: once VLC is installed and OBS is configured, the following times you can also not start VLC ... OBS Studio still detects the camera since the RTMP link is now created. Thanks again and regards.

because this guy has said everything a user needed to know immediately with no JUNK or self promotion in his video this guy should get an award from TH-cam. IN fact, where are the buttons to vote a video for national awards from youtube? How does one do it? This video just saved me HUNDREDS of useless dollars you know why? Because I KNEW there HAD to be a way of streaming to OBS without a dongle piece of junk because technology is making dongles obsolete. Heads up,
    1) MonaServer likely needs to be given permission to communicate over PUBLIC networks rather than just private.

@@zZMazeZz you should be able to change application permissions from Windows Firewall settings. You'll see options for setting permissions as public or private for various apps. If you don't see the Mona application, there should be an option to add an application, which will allow you to add MonaServer with public network privileges

You can add offset delay to the microphone input in the mixer settings on OBS, and if you have another camera feed, you can add a filter called video delay(alsync) and add delay to whatever cam is ahead of the GOpro feed. Basically delay all sources to the slowest/laggiest input source you're bringing in. You can't speed things up, but you can slow them down.

With this, I can livestream my DJ sets with cameras located far away, without having to run a USB-C cable or anything but a small powerbank to keep it going for hours on end. This is great! I got it to work for like 15seconds. The gopro "decides" it cant find the server, and then just immediately will "not find the server" on any subsequent attempt. Since it "cant find the server" you are effectively locked out of changing the server and have to factory reset it. Tried for about an hour last night and its been a pain. I might try to remove any other load from my wifi and unplug it from the actual internet and try again. Fairly frustrating. Super clear video though, thank you!

    Hi!
I have question, I got HERO7. Purchased it just for stream my dj set on facebook, youtube etc. I purchased Pro 3.5mm mic adapter to get sound straight from my DJ mixer. All works perfect, even customer service from GoPro said it will not working. But where the problem, maybe you know, after 1h of streaming on any platform (youtube, facebook, twitch) it disconnect and can't connect back to wi-fi about 10min. As reason of disconnecting is poor wi-fi connection what is bull#it, because wi-fi connection is 100%. It's just not allowing to stream longer then 1.3h. My set is never shorter then 2.5h. I found a lot of topics about that, this issue, is popular when we talking about PRO7. So, can you please tell me, if you stream with PRO8, can you do it longer then 1h, it's allow you to do it? Please don't be confuse about my kind on live streaming, even if I am going live on facebook normally, without dj set, it's disconnecting after 1h. Thanks anyway

So would this work if I was to live stream away from my house but set up the stream before hand. I'm looking to livestream myself freediving for treasures and exploring under water. Getting the signal to the internet isn't the issue. Having to have my 3k euro laptop unattended by the water is. My home pc is very capable and I'd prefer to use that. Also would it then mean I could just record the stream in obs for later use.
Also I'm unsure but I think you can change battery's during the stream if you connect a powerbank 1st. I might be wrong on that. Would you be able to confirm please.
If I can get it working would then I in theory be able to stream anywhere (that has internet signal) to my home pc or would there not be any signal
