Like standing under an idea shower! There were at least three things Rory said which made me say "oh hang on... that's really interesting" and one of them may have changed the my approach to the next 6 month's of my work. Criticism of him because he didn't stick to the question miss the point entirely! Also huge kudos to you, Ali for not trying to manage the interview too tightly. The man was throwing out pearls of wisdom like confetti, it would have been a massive mistake to try and rein him in!
Rory really runs the line between madness and genius, he is so unconventional which makes him equally engaging and completely mind bending and incoherent but if you can separate the wheat from the chaff he has some great insights
I think he's stunningly coherent, It's just that his mind wanders off to seemingly off topic ideas or minute details, then comes back and lands it like a F** genius haha
I love the question about targrt audience! Im a 42 yr old black woman in America and absolutely love the creativity of Rory Sutherland, and just found your podcast, have watched a few episodes over the past few days and subscribed 🔔 I also just went back to school And I'm taking evolutionary biology and have been finding it fascinating as well! Being that marketing is my jam, to hear Rory Sutherland talk about it gives me an excitement about the class, new ideas!
My goodness Ali, Rory was really impressed with you. 😁😁Not only as an alumni of Emmanuel College Cambridge, but it went from mild interest to veneration when you listed your degrees in medicine. In all his interviews, I've never seen this admiration on his face before. ✌✌🫶 Great interview BTW.
I’m 14mins in and I’m looking around the office like guys y’all need to listen to Roy talk. This man is brilliant. Can’t believe TikTok brought me here.😅
Mind blown over and over again! The thing with great thinkers is, they just lift the veil you didn't think was there and have you see things as they truly are. Brilliant, garrulous, fun guest!
Rory is so right around minute 59 talking about how companies only do what's measurable and not necessarily what's important, which I have noticed when taking customer surveys. They only ask the questions to the parameters they can track and control easily within their organization, instead of the questions I always want to see which include a little free type text box to explain what you like or don't.
Saw the title, saw the dude I‘ve never heard of, both not making me excited at all. Experience tells me this could be great, and damn, it was!!! British humour at its best! And of course with absolute truth in it!
I recently started reading Rory's book, "Alchemy: The Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense". One of the fabulous things about the Internet is that I can supplement his book with fascinating videos like this one, and also discover new TH-cam channels like Ali Addaal's. Sutherland's book, by the way, is well worth obtaining. I have the audio version, which he narrates, and I recommend it highly.
This is amazing! It is always great to see/listen to interviews that are not with “real estate/finance gurus” that think that they will teach us how to become millionaires in 1hr. This interview was full of sociology, history, arts, psychology - truly truly captivating
The consumer psychology bit reminded me of a behavioral theory from fighting video games: never nerf, only buff. Making characters weaker to balance the game has a net negative effect compared to buffing less-winning characters
About 10:30 "ring up someone I know." For those who don't know, it refers to dial-up phones. 😁😁 Love that Rory refers to Google and 'ring up someone' in the same sentence.
Agree with many commenters regarding Rory is all over the place, this podcast needed an edit. TBH, Ali lost control of this interview off the start. That said, I *DO* think that this interview was eye opening, reaffirming (I'm a math guy), and insightful and of all the deep dives I watched, THIS is the one chock full of concepts with examples. The value here is Ali has 15-20 interesting concepts with which to create a long-form video diving into these concepts... The Explore/exploit trade-off; TH-cam is video wikipedia; User imagery vs target audience; Abilene Effect; The Amazon Algorithm / garbage name registered trademarks; The dynamics of choice architecture; Basic Stats concepts - issue recalibration, average vs the normal curve; Total agreement on Japanese toilet vs western toilet/transformative products/concepts - buy once vs buy 3 times and onward; “How frequently will this be used?” as a critical concept/Apps AS A BARRIER; Tech ignores the elderly - this is huge, as a tech - still things are moving fast - for the teens/tweens and ignoring the elderly - everyone (hopefully) becomes the elderly! Book reviews of the list Rory randomly refers to all over the interview. The list goes on! As an stand alone interview, agreed a bit long and winding, Ali was clearly overwhelmed by a force of nature that Rory is, but all in all a great lever for Ali to build on this for HIS BRAND!
Dominos is actually accurate I used to work at a model store, meaning we tested new methods for the company. My general manager would say we were a tech company that sold pizza
Rory is amazing and full of insights, great inspiration. Ali, you have to "learn" and mature as moderator to be able to manage the flow of Rory's speech and ideally be able to even guide it towards some key talking points 😂
This is now in my top three podcasts of all time alongside Revisionist History's Toyota episode and the one on Elvis forgetting the words. Rory was that inspiring. More Rore, please.
@@bobby9568 Didn't realise how vague that was... Rory talks about graphics for roller shutters showing graphics of children reduced the likelihood of people breaking into the property. Essentially, this
Ali the slight fury and determination to wrap the pod up repeatedly was hilarious. It felt like saying goodbye to my Nan!, you britished it perfectly 😅
If there are any unemployed medical graduates desperate for a job, love sunshine and blue skies, Australia is HELLA short of doctors. It's insane. People cannot get in to see their gp's for months, and then those poor gp's are exhausted, falling apart and going on indefinite leave. For chronic pain sufferers and other chronic conditions, as well as people with serious health concerns, and kids that need to see a doctor, we're all panicking, frustrated, and downright terrified. COME TO AUSTRALIA. PLEASE!!!!!
I use statistics to shine a torch in the dark to guide me when making a decision especially if I’m selling/marketing something. I bought a home many years ago in an area which was equidistant between 3 major North London hospitals as I figured that doctors would never be out of work! Over the years, the doctors status grew ever higher eg houseman to consultant to specialist until doctors stopped buying in the area altogether as they couldn’t afford it and moved out (overtaken over by bankers & hedgefunders). Improved schools, great transport links, a good house layout which made interior design to make a tiny house look huge a breeze, the worst house on the best road & on the fringe of some astronomically expensive areas did the rest. Statistics are important as an aide to marketing.
Abdaal totally lost for words by being way 'out intelligenced' by the guest. In the spirit of fairness, so was I (and I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person). This guest is in a world of his own, literally!
I feel like Ali was kinda tense from the point when Rory mentioned the Jordan Peterson interview in tv… His posture, fidgeting and all made me think this. I am probably wrong but it made me think: what a shame that he was slightly bothered by Rory’s comment and couldn’t seem to focus and enjoy the conversation. Being able to sit down with this man and listen is such a privilege and unique opportunity! Thank you so much for sharing this Ali 🙏🏻
Love the attempt to get control of the interview in minute 55 - “what is marketing?” Out of the blue haha A bit all over the place but good interview of you’re not looking for something too intense
Hard to understand if he answered any of the questions or got lost in his own thoughts 😅 I always find it more enlightening when people can give a simple answer as opposed to a constant ramble of sorts….
Thanks. Pls I've got a question . Have you interviewed any millionaire blogger on "your deep dive" Also, in your personal opinion, do you think blogging is still scalable in the next 5 to 10 years. Is the gap to the problem still that big?

For real, this episode was weirdly chaotic but very interesting.

Me too. I think I've pretty much ran out of interviews and audiobooks of his to listen to!
His talk at TED is worth listening to.

I think Ali is trying to do unedited raw podcasts in the vein of JRE so it would make sense for him to edit it. He can however improve his technique.
