  • From the 141 opening night season of the New York Philharmonic. My apologies for the grainy quality. Some of the original clarity is lost while transferring an almost 40 year old well-worn VHS to DVD.

      Not really, at least for what I'm hearing here. We don't know what language she's speaking, not even knowing the libretto - not Italian for sure, except for the word "tempesta" - and her voice is too dull at the beginning, even though the altos are acceptable.

    Extraordinary artist! I only saw her once onstage, as Ariadne. Of course Price sings everything beautifully and with apparent ease. If I had been there, I would’ve cheered. But the whole point of this aria is the extreme range - low-high, high-low. And while Price’s high notes are glorious, the low notes are pretty weak.

    Nice little Cadenza at '...e nell tempesta!' She tries a bit too hard with the lowest notes though. Making them bigger and darker than necessary. The Aria's a monster to sing, for sure.
    Never thought of her as a Mozart singer.

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually she was far more suited to Mozart and Händel, and to a lesser extent Puccini, than she was to Verdi. Somehow she acquired a reputation as the consummate Verdi soprano, but that's the last thing she was. Her soft-grained voice was lacking in the morbidezza and bite that roles like Amelia in Un ballo in maschera and the two Leonoras require, and its lyrical weight was totally inadequate for Aïda, her most famous role. Had she stuck to Mozart, Strauss and Händel, her voice would most certainly have enjoyed a longer and healthier life, rather than deteriorating to the point that her stage career was effectively over after only twenty-odd years.

    • @silvanero
      @silvanero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jasonhurd4379 Price began singing opera during the fifties. So her voice didnot deteriorate after twenty odd years of singing!! You also have to take into account ALL of the singing she was doing which included recitals, concert appearances, recordings and opera!! I think she more than proved her vocal prowess whether YOU think her voice was suited for this or that!! It doesn’t matter because she is one of the most successful singers in history. Brava Leontyne!!! Stop judging!!

      @@jasonhurd4379 What a bunch of absurdities! “… the last thing she was””…totally inadequate for Aida,” etc. Balderdash! Price had her weaknesses, like every singer, but she was still the finest and most enduring Verdi soprano of her era - in Trovatore, Aida, Ballo, Forza, and Verdi’s Requiem. Arroyo and Caballe intruded on her realm beautifully, but briefly. By the early 1980s,
      she was the only one left singing Verdi at the highest level, with morbidezza, expressive intensity, and a secure high C. (Mitchell was a minor contender, but came a bit later. Then Millo.)
