As a Jamaican the Chinese are more talented and skilled with these road projects in terms of the technology and technologies and engineers, we need to develop our civil engineering sector in order for us to have the experience to get the work done, our public works departments and engineers need training the government needs to setup a program where government employees and regular workers can get the skilled training so they can be able to do projects on a large scale as the Chinese worker can do

Have you even see a project in Jamaica which is maintained by all Jamaican workers? The Jamaican contractors take so long to complete and the materials they used is substandard!
Just imagine if the Seaga highway was made by Jamaican contractors it would be still in the preparation phase! There are good Jamaican contractors but the workers around them are the problem!

A video I saw yesterday beautifully explained the situation between China, Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean at large, so I think I have an idea of what is going on.
From what I understand; the reason why China has so much of its workers in Jamaica (and why they are giving the country funding to finish many of these major infrastructure projects) is because of a massive unemployment issue back in China. China is having trouble finding work opportunities for its people and its economy, so they try to seek employment outside the country to help boost its economy. China also has a natural resource and housing problem, hence why China is so interested in countries that have open land for development, dormant factories and ports with which it can then operate.
Naturally, the Jamaican government is taking FULL advantage of this, controlling the amount of access China has over Jamaica as well as expediting well needed growth for their own economy.

The information you've fed about Jamaica having control over the Chinese access is quite far from the truth my friend. Jamaica like all the other Caribbean Islands and African Countries who has entered into these deals with China will in the long run become Chinese properties when the allotted time of repayment expires and the debt is not paid.
This is not a good deal for Jamaica. Both successive Governments has sent Jamaica down a slippery slope with this Chinese takeover type of deal. The Chinese already owns Kingston Harbor, that should speak volume to you, why would another country wants to own someone else's port harbor and why would I have sell you my port of harbor before you grant me a massive infrastructure so-called "loan" ?
You guys are not seeing the bigger picture, all you are seeing is pretty roads weh mek unuh skin ketch ah fyah cau Jamaica have highways now. SMDH !

    • @the-development-scribbler
      @the-development-scribbler ปีที่แล้ว

@@kardomafia2598 If you did a little more research and stopped letting the public media control you so much you'd know this is not necessarily the case for Jamaica or the Caribbean. You're listening to the same people who said China would line the North-South highway with hotels, restaurants and businesses; and would be making us learn Mandarin as a second language by now. What China is doing right now is not much different than what the U.S. and Europe had done decades ago.
You're acting like China is the first time Jamaica got highways. Where were you people when France did it first back in the 2000s? France also used to own part of Kingston Harbour in the past around that time too, why weren't you making a big stink over it THEN? How soon you guys forget!
China owns 100% shares in Kingston Harbour yes, but PAJ still owns Kingston Harbour itself; just as it did before. China owning shares in other countries is nothing new; one of them is the Netherlands - which is a rich and developed country - yet China owns shares in it. In fact, Jamaica's overall debt is falling, and is starting to fund its own projects while depending less on China for loans.
I'm not saying people shouldn't be vigilant when mega-sized states like China come offering such assistance to smaller countries, but you need to think more rationally. The moment China sets foot on Jamaican shores, you people get confused, look to the larger Northern countries that influenced us for years, and when they start crying foul you people join them. You need to stop listening to vocal propaganda and dig a little deeper.

The best roads in Jamaica are the old school roads made from sand and not marl. Those last 50+ years and even dilapidated are a pleasurable road surface to drive on. They deal with water damage well. So it would have been good to have Britain build more roads again.

JA run from the English for independence only to now run in the hands of the Chinese taking over? Well I just hope there will be enough property for the Jamaican citizen to still own. And while things are looking beautiful we must realize that our Government needs to stop giving away so much to outsiders & the rich Jamaicans need to ask invest in their Country! Also I am concern about the safety of widening the road which is build above this water

The British n the Americans only saw us as their playground n vacationing SPOT. All they were interesting in were hotels n our farm workers NOTHING ELSE. They were never interested to see our infrastructure get any better . They were always content to ave us as their servants NOTHING MORE and when I say this I am saying this from the view of a 75 years old man who has always travelled all over our beautiful island observing and wondering why de powers dat be did not see our vast POTENTIAL in every aspect. CHEC uses their own labor all over the world for one primary reason - it reduces the cost of the project because Chinese labor is (comparatively) dirt cheap and culturally easy to manage. And yes, they are highly skilled and experienced.
I hope that in Jamaica and elsewhere, there is at least knowledge transfer so that these places don't end up beholden to China for generations to come.
Because make no mistake, when the Chinese plan, they plan the next century.

Right now the Britain had to invited Chinese engineers to help complete high speed railway 🚅 because they were struggling to meet deadlines, cost had gone sky high.
China have trillions, therefore to make their money value increase, they had invested in other countries eg third world countries who need vital infrastructures such as roads, bridges, high tech wharves etc.
In most collaborations a percent ratio workforces are needed.

In the business world no one give a helping for free, in 1 way or another they have to pay a price. That’s my take from china giving an open arms, hey, I could be wrong.

These loans have no interest rates, not like IMF and world bank, the roads pay for themselves in toll money. All our jamaican companies are owned by Americans , Alcoa, JPS, coffee industry, sugar cane what's left for China to get. Our ports need development and we need to export more products. What we produce in jamaica? Think about it we have to develop manufacturing and service sectors, farming that's all on the government and private sector and citizens who can fund these projects

Just bear in mind that expertise and equipment are required to build this kind of infrastructure. These are expected to be long-lasting, esp. since we're not only in the earthquake zone but susceptible to hurricanes and other natural disasters. Remember also that we're a small developing nation without ALL required for a project of this magnitude. What is hoped though is that our local engineers and contractors learn from these Chinese experts to be able to build the next high way on their own.
