WHY YOUR SKIN TONES SUCK: WHITE BALANCE a7iii a7riii

  • We know the Sony cameras have been known to have okay skin tones but the a7iii and a7riii's new color science is a huge improvement. Going from a photographer to a filmmaker early on I never understood the importance of setting my white balance in camera. I want to save you time making the mistakes I made early on. Setting up your white balance in camera will save you time in post correcting colors and give you more flattering skin tones out of your Sony cameras. I'll show you how to set a custom white balance in your Sony alpha camera and how to use Gary Fong's Color reference white balance tools. I use this method on my sony a7iii and a7riii every time I start filming or take portrait photos.

    Jay, great vid, and awesome tip. I just posted a vid on my channel and the struggle was REAL for WB. When I first started shooting there was just so much to remember I couldn't take it all it in. Now each time I get out I'm adding a bit more experience, and remembering a few more tricks.

      That's it dude, I've said it in the past I've learned the most by making mistakes! Sometimes it sucks but being able to learn from them are huge. There is a lot to remember thats why I tell everyone asking about color grading and cool effects to take it easy and learn the basics! I'm going to check the video out now, if you ever have questions man hit me up!

    I have to confess - I never set custom white balance but I really need to do it for my future projects. I do have a basic question on that: Let's say I'm shooting in one and the same environment but shooting my subject in different angles so the light source will come from different directions. Do I have to set the white balance for each angle separately? I hope not. This would take away a lotta flexibility you need during documentary shoots.

    I’ve done that when Gary first came out with them. But I’ve learned that using grays are for exposure, not for white balance.

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On my cinema camera and sony I use false color and expose for middle grey, using the grey dome gives me the most accurate skin tones from my experience and I personally see it in the footage. I've never been a fan of the white cards honestly! Appreciate the insight!

    I use the color scopes on an external monitor to dial in white balance wherever possible. It seems especially helpful for dialing in green/magenta shift that can be hard to accurately judge in camera - and where I think a lot of the bad skin tones come from.

      We'll with lighting always changing and different types of lights I would suggest if indoors to always set a custom white balance. On sunny days outside 5600k is the go to but remember if its cloudy or you're in the shade just select those options on your camera instead of sunny weather. you should be fine!

    How often do you have to set the white balance? For example I am in a forrest, but the light shifts dramatically because of the shadows being in one spot and sunlight in another. Do you have to set white balance each time you shift light areas? Or do you only do it once?

    I've a question. example: I'm shooting a 30min video of a lession, set made up with what I've... 2 soft box, one used as a key light, second one used as rim light plus the light that comes from a window behind the key light that fills the room that is still pretty dark otherwise...white balance left to auto (a7iii), the results are that during the 30min video, lights changes, skin tones passes from what I wanted at the begin to something different (still acceptable but the transition from a tone to another pisses me off especially if there's a jump cut from something I've to cut) what I'm doing wrong? is it only the auto white balance ? do I fix this setting it manually or I should close the window and get 100% of the light in the scene under control to fix it without having to deal with this in post??
