THIS is why we PREP!! People are always mocking preppers, but this is why everyone should prep! Yes, a lot of people's preps got washed away, but if everyone had prepped, those who didn't get washed away would be able to assist those who's stuff DID get washed away. We were barely affected. Power was out for 8 hours and we lost internet for 3 days, but we also are way above any flood level. The level of destruction and loss of life is heartbreaking.
We live in the north, most of the time we lose power during snow and ice storms. We have a freeze dryer and have been prepping food for a few years. But Im making an effort to buy dry foods like rice and beans.
Not only did you survive but you thrived. This was a huge pressure test on your ability to cope and you did great. Well done, thanks for sharing your experience
When you can survive a catastrophic event with a smile on your face, you are doing something right. One thing for sure, I think everyone's "priority list" will be changing after this one. Prayers for all the families who have lost loved ones.
Jason, Lorraine, and Penelope, it's been a godsend that Jason did what he did and when he did it for your rain catchment system that he put in place earlier this year. It's helping you right now to have that rain catchment system up and running right now in a time of need of the water that the rain catchment system had caught for your family. Correct Jason ❗❗❗
I am so happy you kept the freezers going. I have always noticed that people really step up when they go through things together. What the news focuses on is not the norm. Most people are really good humans. I send my good thoughts and prayers to everyone who has had to endure this hurricane. But especially to North Carolina. Youre all on our hearts and minds.
The fact you were fairly prepared and self sufficient is great as folks like you take the pressure off emergency rescue services who can then help those harder hit.
Thank you for your praise to the line workers who are coming from all over and working long shifts to help out NC, and other states who need help. I have been so disappointed in one youtuber who is in NC disparaging that no one but local residents are doing anything to help out. Thank you Lorraine and Jason.
I’m in Western NC…I’ve seen utility workers from New Jersey, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Connecticut, and many other states..they have rolled in both far and wide…we are forever grateful for the hours and hours of work through the worst conditions imaginable..I and my community are humbled and thankful! ❤🙏🏻
We DO collect and drink our rain water. It comes off our metal roof over the carport and it TASTES FANTASTIC!!! So much better than even filtered water or bottled water. Our grandparents drank rain water straight from the barrel. They lived long and we're still here too. If you're worried, have it tested.
Total honestly y’all are my favorite homestead channel. Y’all are so wonderful. You make honest videos and are truly relatable. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks so. I’m happy y’all are safe and are prepared as much as y’all can do. Y’all seem to be doing great!
Yes, we aren't such tin foil haters are we? We do our research and have been predicting this stuff for over 25 years!!!! This is NOT going to stop. This is weather warfare. But I'll bet I'll be called a tin foil hater for that too. Doplar, CERN and HAARP technology responsible. Comes right from the orders of our miitary Generals. Airforce ..spraying in atmosphere, Navy using HAARP technology off of ships, Army...destroying other innocent countries that are trying to fight against this shit and keep their sovereinty.
Linda here…on the farm we had wood heat, propane stove/oven, propane grill, electric baseboard and propane heat. The pens were juiced with batteries we charged in the garage. On the sailboat now we are solar with LiFePO4 batteries, gas generator and diesel engine. We make our own water in 2 tanks that are 40 gal each. Redundancy is key. Add the option of solar and you’re good to go.
The love and humor in your family makes you so resilient. I love your approach, similar to mine, but the details are beautiful and the love. I realize you may not have been hit as hard as others, but your preparation and attitude can really help. We are praying and sending support to local assistance groups.
Such a relief for the power being back on! Thanks to all the first responders, linemen’s work! ❤ what a wonderful community you all live in! You certainly wouldn’t get that in a city! God bless you all!
I remember so very clearly how things were here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Katrina, so my heart is with the folks who are suffering from Helene now. Prayers for everyone. Have to admit that I had to laugh at the power coming back on because I remember how that felt for us. I was staying at my mother's house, and we were on the porch playing cribbage by candlelight late one night when the power came back on after more than two weeks. We didn't even dare to believe it was real so we just looked at one another without saying a word and we kept playing until the game was finished before we got up simultaneously in unison to go into the house to enjoy that we had power again. We just couldn't say a word because it was so amazing. I still had to wait more than two more months before my place got power! Hoping for moments of joy and relief for all those affected.
So glad y'all are OK. In Leesville SC day 7 no power. Doing exactly as you are. Rain water for animals and washing utensils. Generator, fans. Praying for everyone in NC
Glad you got power and are safe. My husband and I were without electricity for eleven days after a really bad sleet storm. It was a historic flood. The temperatures were sitting at zero to 20 above zero. No water or heat until we set up a kerosene heater and we were able to get water in town. We had a whopping 119 inches of snow that winter which was record breaking. The temperatures were record breaking cold too (negative 20’s highs and negative 40’s lows) This happened in North Dakota in 1996-1997. Prayers to all
So happy you got your power back on...I know that is a relief. It's great that you accomplished a couple of bucket list items, not the way you might have expected, but it qualifies none the less. This experience also give you the opportunity to see what things you need more of or need to get. so That is a positive too. Thanks for sharing, thanks for parents coming bearing gifts, y'all have a Blessed day.
Im glad you have lights back on but you learn a lot from it and shows where things need improved but mother nature is going to keep us humble, prayers for all those in need .
Thanks for bringing us along & sharing all your attitude of gratitude! Great fence building was all worth it! Lorraine, I appreciate your grateful attitude & your parents for being there for you all. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦🌻
We have a JACKERY 1500. It’s only 35lbs, can be solar charged, and can run power tools like a jackhammer, a cement mixer, a table saw and a compound miter saw. I use it at our camp, and bring it home to charge off our solar shingles at home. It can also charge while you drive, which is pretty cool for traveling. Nowadays they sell even bigger ones that can power your whole house, and recharge off solar. It’s definitely worth the investment. Best!!!
When tropical storm Sandy came up the coast about 10 years ago, we were without power for 29 days... We did okay... but it's tough to live without coffee. I had an inverter... started up my vehicle... and made a pot... a couple of times a day. So... that helped. Keeping you in our thoughts.... so keep the faith.
Campfire coffee. Put cold water and coffee grounds in pan. Bring to a boil. Take pan off fire and let the grounds settle and steep a couple minutes. Pour off into cups, or pour through paper filter. Good to go.
So glad your electric is back on. You guys are so resilient and handled the hardship of this major disaster very well. I'm rejoicing with you, the Lord is good.
Vinegar and water in a spray bottle is my go to for hand, body, and dish washing. Especially when water is limited, this method totally works to keep everything very sanitary. I keep one in the bathroom, one in the kitchen, and one in the outside kitchen. I go a bit heavy on the vinegar quantity.
Glad to see you are making the most of the situation. Emergencies like this are a great reminder of why everyone should try to have multiple backups for various things. Yes, storing water when you use a lot can be troublesome but it may be worth it to find a way to store some in your house for future times like this. At least you have plenty of water for your animals and can use that for washing. But drinkable water may be a good idea to store in some quantity. Those chickens and ribs looked fantastic.
Glad you got power back on. Jason, maybe drop the line from your fence posts when you get ready to cut down those trees. At least when it falls it will not snap the line or pull things apart.
I'm from Iowa we had a derecho back in 2020 and lost a ton of trees like y'all have. It's so heartbreaking to see the landscape change that quickly it effects everything in the environment. The winds even blow through differently. You have all been in my 🙏🙏 It's a challenging life with limited power. ❤
My daughter and I lived for 3 years without hot water. Creativity kicked in after the heat of summer no longer heated the garden hose water. We had a hand pumped Pressurized 2 gallon thing for misting us when using our awning. I got bigger plastic tube at big box store and used a camp shower spray nozzle. Pour in hot water and pump. You get good at taking quick showers.
❤ Lorraine, God gave you your hearts desire in the middle of a catastrophe. Nothing is too hard for God. Sometimes it's in the hard times that God does something to let us know he's still watching over you.
I admire your & Lorraine's positive outlook. I thought 82 hrs early spring without electricity was bad enough. A positive outlook makes things a lot more livable.
I appreciate these videos, because it helps us think about our own " what ifs" and try to prepare as best we can. Ideas are always appreciated! Hope power stays on! Years ago around 1996 we had snowmagertton... While restoring power, they would turn it on and off, to '"share" the power load/ do work. Took about 3 weeks. Glad it wasn't winter!
This is one of rhe reason why we the people need to have if possible multiple ways ro cook food and have light. Gas stove, wood srove, camping stove, fire pit. Solar power, generators, everything possible to survive what ever xomes our Way.
I remember years ago when our town , the whole town, went through an ice storm. Took out the entire towns grid and we were without power for 10 days. Luckily we had a generator. But it was in the middle of winter. The only heat we had we was the fireplace. Thank heavens we had a wood insert. Did not enjoy it, but we made it through,
For the last several months I have watched you guys work really hard to get your infrastructure in place thank goodness you did because it really helped you during this tough time!!! Stay safe Contreases (sp) family!!!
As you say Lorraine this was a huge test on your preparedness and you adapted and got through it. Thank goodness Jason did his water catchment and if you had run out of drinking water you would have had the catchment water. Hats off to you both. Glad you Lorraine, Jason and Penelope and the animals you are all ok. Poor Justin Rhodes and his family they are ok but quiet a lot of damage.
Good evening Jason and family & friends, it's tough without electricity but just think of the old wagon trains heading out west, cooking over a campfire every night. Just think "good old days".
I love seeing your parents, Lorraine 💕. They are sweethearts and such a BLESSING. I miss my parents. Thou, I know they are sleeping with JESUS. You got to go camping, cook outside, and shower, too!!! You are very much GREATFUL. AND THANKFUL FOR ALL YOU HAVE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. HOPE TO SEE YOU ON FRIDAY SHOPTALK. SE MICHIGAN 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
That a solid fence. Happy to see the fencing has held. Great to see electricity is on. All are safe and sound ❤😊 thank you for sharing and the update 😊
After watching so many of our Homestead video families and seeing the sadness and the fear, it was so glad to turn to your homestead video and see y’all smiling and saying that you were having fun and you camped out and she got her outdoor kitchen made me happy, ❤ bless you.
Omg!!! Lorraine's mom looks like her sister!!! That's crazy!! And her dad looks very young also!! That's a Blessing!! I'm glad yall power is restored and you did a great job with your preparation!! Love ya channel and I'll continue to watch and support!! Stay Blessed!!
That is such a wonderful thing about that part of this Country. I wish ppl were like that here in Colorado. But Californian's kinda took over this State. And for the most part, they are very type A, and not very sharing, caring type ppl. Some are. But I fear if a natural disaster ever happens here.
That’s one of the smartest, simplest things I’ve seen is to save the water that just fell in torrents onto your land. So many people are without water now. Nice to have our basics like power and water.
That moment the homesteader became a pepper! 😉👍 So glad you and your family are safe and were able to ride through your challenges with grace! Thank you for sharing your experience.
First time on your channel and boy am I impressed! You kept your composure under pressure and your lovely wife was even enjoying herself. I’m so glad you’re all ok this storm has been so devastating! Praying for those affected. 🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻
That fence is sturdy. Glad to know your family fared well thru this catastrophe. In 2022 I experienced Hurricane Agatha in Costa Oaxaca Mexico. 8 days not power. We ate amazing meals as we had just stocked up on food. The phone/internet was only out 5 days. Blessings of abundance and wisdom
Hey guys. Here in the Australian High Country all we have is rain water. Shower in it drink it, use it for everything. The best you can get. Hope your power is back on soon
I’m so glad you hung on so well. It’s a long time to be without power, happened to me thus spring. One thing you might look into is the so called “hour shower” which is an invention of the RV and vanlife community, which you can search on TH-cam. Essentially it's a portable recirculating shower from preheated water in a basin. Before the water is recycled for you again it goes through an RV cartridge water filter, so the soap and scunge and whatnot is removed. Hence, you could shower for some time comfortably. Sounds ideal to me for camping and emergeny reasons, i want one myself, it’s a DIY thing. Maybe a propane freezer for you guys too, just in case? You don’t need my advice, just want the best for you.
Incredible damage from this storm, its unbelievable. You guys were very well prepared its awesome to see, one thing ive learned from seeing this is i need a good way to get water out of my deep well when there is no power. Stay strong and help out the neighbors.
Glad you are all well, the disaster in incredible, looks like all the western part of NC is going to need a total grid rebuild. So many people from up here in Mass have gone down to help. Hang in there! Good that the meat made it!
So glad to hear you have power. My daughter had a tree fall on her house and no power for 6 days after the Temple Texas tornado. They borrowed a friends generator to help with fans and cell phones. But she said it took a lot of gas
if I ever needed a great reminder of why I should have solar and batteries even as a backup this is a great example.
@@JeremyHorn80 you realize the wind was so bad the panels would have never survived.
THIS is why we PREP!! People are always mocking preppers, but this is why everyone should prep! And just think Puerto Rico went over 180 days in most places, sometimes longer, when Hurricane Maria hit.
We live in the north, most of the time we lose power during snow and ice storms. We have a freeze dryer and have been prepping food for a few years. But Im making an effort to buy dry foods like rice and beans.
I don't prep myself... I think I have enough for maybe a week at a time... maybe 2 max...but I've never once mocked a prepper
I'd love when this is all over to have you go over your preparedness and tell us what was helpful and what you would change.
A Berkey water filter works without power and would be an excellent addition to your rainwater collection to purify it for drinking and cooking.
There are several good, no power water filtration options, not just Berkey
and those gravity systems don’t purify bacterial contamination, if people need that. They do remove sediments.
Not only did you survive but you thrived. This was a huge pressure test on your ability to cope and you did great. Well done, thanks for sharing your experience
Until those generators run out of gas.
@@5GreenAcres Oh they'll get somewhere and get gas. These folks are survivors. Self sufficient. God Bless them!

yes, so true 👍
Thousands of homes in much worse state and facing weeks of downturns. can survive without daily showers long time. but freezers massive risk.
Well smart ppl's will.
So happy your power came back on.
I've lived on rainwater for 40 years. i love my water. IMO you never ran out of water. Glad all is well.
Glad the power was restored and the trees were cut. Y’all really improvized and made the best of it. Thanks mom and dad for bringing water.

We have a JACKERY 1500.
It’s only 35lbs, can be solar charged, and can run power tools like a jackhammer, a cement mixer, a table saw and a compound miter saw.

That moment the homesteader became a pepper! 😉👍 So glad you and your family are safe and were able to ride through your challenges with grace! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Sorry you guys are having to go through this! Praying for you
First time on your channel and boy am I impressed! You kept your composure under pressure and your lovely wife was even enjoying herself. I’m so glad you’re all ok this storm has been so devastating! Praying for those affected. 🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻
I am so glad you and your family are safe and sound after the storm.
Great to see the power back, love your videos Jason from Australia.
Great to see you have the power back on and you were so resilient through it all.
I'm so happy that you got power back, and you managed through the storm❤
Glad you and your family have made it safely
I love that you captured the moment!!!! ❤❤❤
I’m down in SC about 2 hrs or so. You need anything let me know. I’ll run up there
Thank you for helping your u tube family.
GOD BLESS YOU❤❤❤ SE MICHIGAN 🙏
Incredible damage from this storm, its unbelievable. You guys were very well prepared its awesome to see, one thing ive learned from seeing this is i need a good way to get water out of my deep well when there is no power. Stay strong and help out the neighbors.
Happy you got your electric back on.
so many people thought i was crazy for canning so much water for our cellar, but we needed it last winter when power, Good Luck you all
Parents are the best!
Glad you are all well, the disaster in incredible, looks like all the western part of NC is going to need a total grid rebuild. So many people from up here in Mass have gone down to help. Hang in there! Good that the meat made it!
Ohhh so glad to see you ❤I was really worried watching the news yesterday 🙏 thank you Lord for watching over this family 🙏
Hugs from Ontario Canada
Very prescious to see how you all handled the no power issues.. Thank you and blessings going forward 🙏❤️
Glad you got power restored! You do a great job with your videos. Love your editing, music and interesting shots. 👏🏻
So glad to hear you have power. My daughter had a tree fall on her house and no power for 6 days after the Temple Texas tornado. They borrowed a friends generator to help with fans and cell phones. But she said it took a lot of gas
