      @@Thercgeek You're welcome sir. These sort of complicated convoluted designs is art in engineering itself and testimony to the genius of aircraft designers in solving problems. Other complex landing gears include for the Lockheed C5 Galaxy (where the landing gear twists 90 degrees) and the MiG-23 Flogger. The wing fold mechanisms of the WWII Grumman "cat" series are also good examples. With best regards from Malaysia!

    Chris, what is the white adhesive (applied with small spatula) that you use throughout this video?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is epoxy with micro balloons. The micro balloons is what turns it white and helps lighten and volumize the epoxy.

    This is a fantastic bit of engineering and also solves a life-long mystery for me. I’ve always loved airplanes, and even as a little kid I was fascinated by retractable landing gear. A model airplane was not as interesting to me without it. But I had a book with pictures of the B-58 and for the life of me I could not figure out how that long gear got into such short doors. _Every_ time I would see those pictures it would puzzle me, especially the nose gear! After 50+ years of wondering, I can now have some peace. 😅 Subscribing to see further progress. It already looks amazing!

    That's great work ! The only thing that bothers me with those electric retracts is the noise they make... I know that once in flight you don't ear that noise but it still bothers me 😂... Air retracts are unfortunately unreliable...

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I hear you on the sound. My experience has been that Air are just as good if not better than electric. Most of my large scale stuff I opt for air, but these were designed electric from the start.

    • @Airsally

    Nice job. Is it a kit? Is it a one-off 3D print? One of the most iconic aircraft ever built. It's been on my bucket list of builds for quite some time. Instead, I've settled on the XB-51 Panther.
    A word of advice, make sure you keep the speed going into turns with that thing. Those honkin nacelles and a delta wing, will drag it straight to a smokin hole if you do not. Liked and subbed...
    PS did you droop the leading-edge down like the real aircraft? Convair did this on the Delta Dagger and the Delta Dart

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว

    The B58 is the most beautiful airplane in the world. This is Awesome. Have you done some gear cycles with the aircraft "right side up" since it was all assembled on its back? ..and with perhaps a leaf blower on the assemblies for some simulated airflow.? Its a pretty complex system... the strings fluttering in the airlfow.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have exercised the gear upright and all good. I may put a leaf blower to it at some point, but haven’t this far to test the gear with.

    I hope your CG calculation works out right. I once built a scratch built speed 400 delta and despite reading everything I could find about CG on delta wings for the first flight the CG was 2 or 3 inches rearward and the plane was unflyable . Hand launch of course so the result was a back flip to the ground. I redid the fuselage so I could move the batt forward and made a new styrofoam nose and managed to fly the plane on the second attempt. It was a blast to fly and with its solid balsa wing and 1/4 x1/2” hard balsa keel running the full length of the underside of the wing it was indestructible except for the styrofoam nose and sheet balsa foward fuselage. I had it set up with dual rates. High rate for the launch and then once the plane was up to speed low rates with lots of expo. The first 50’ after the toss were hairy leading to me naming the plane the Hairy Delta. Remember, when you start cranking and banking deltas bleed off speed quickly!

      A cool maneuver I used to do I called the elevator. I would pull back the power and as the plane slowed I would keep adding up elevator. The plane would develop a dramatic sink rate while remaining flat and controllable. Add power and / or drop the nose and the recovery to normal flight was instantaneous. Just don’t get too low when first trying this !

      Yeah, deltas can be a lot of fun. With the vortex enhanced lift you get, they can fly incredibly slow and remain stable throughout. 😊 don’t think I’ll be doing much of that with this bird, but the nose high landing should be pretty awesome!

    Wow!!...Those landing gear are so complex..,well done Chris.
    Can’t wait to see this iconic bird fly again👌

    Freakin' awesome. After seeing the real B-58 in a museum, I've been wondering how the retracts worked on the plane. This is great, thank you for sharing.

    What keeps the wire in the hinge in the main doors? Just curious as it seems like it wouldn't take much for it to slip forward far enough to come out of the small rear piece attached to the fuselage?

      There’s a decent amount of friction there, so the wire won’t slip out at all. It would require quite a bit of suction for it to pull forward. That being said, I may still use a small piece of aluminum tape at the front just to be sure.

      @@Thercgeek I was just thinking of vibration and movement. I have no doubt in your abilities, was just wondering as you simply slid it out repeatedly. Thanks for the reply, as always.

    Great video man great work can’t wait to see her fly for the first time soon. The fact that you’re doing a B 58 hustler it’s awesome. I think one of my favorite things about that plane was how the gears would retract into the airplane on takeoff and landing, I will definitely or personally if I get time off to come see her fly for the first time I will try my best. Keep up the good work awesome to see you’re coming along smoothly.

      Thanks man! Not sure where the maiden will be just yet. I’m scoping out sites with a bit more space for when that time comes.
