Eating Bone Marrow for Breakfast

  • In this episode we tackle what's left of a leg by eating everything including what's inside, the bone marrow. In this episode we dig into a quick camp meal using the bones of a meat stripped bear. This is making the most of the animal harvested by maximizing every part of it. Bone marrow is very rich in nutrients and high in calories compared to just lean meat. Something cavemen were sure to take advantage of.

    We weight-in and weigh-out and if we lose any body mass at all, we have FAILED the challenge!
    Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use on this survival challenge. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think! If it's legal, it's fair use. Sometime we even do some bushcraft, but the main focus is really on eating wild foods, wild edibles and catching and cooking various foods.
    This isn't about just surviving, this is about thriving!
    Season 4: Northern Autumn, takes place in Northern Ontario with vast opens seasons including fish, catfish, pike, trout, birds such as grouse, duck, and geese, bear, deer, and moose. Also wild apples, mushrooms, berries, and so much more. We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!
    Beaver are surprisingly easy to trap and offer a ton of nutrients to the forager. A real staple item! Beaver is also great eating, usually very full of fats crucial to surviving long term in the wild.

    Another good one young man. I'm assuming that some wild edibles such as cattail, tubers, etc to add to your meals are not available due to the time of year. It's been interesting to see how quickly eating the same food became old/boring. Do you think cooking the same meat differently ( fry, roast, etc) can help stay off food boredom? God bless

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We will do some different cooking for sure, and it does help. Wild edibles are a let down, lots of time spent collecting and processing, maybe even more than it returns. Acorns would be good, but allow 2-3 weeks for leeching, same with cattail tubers...climb in cold water to get them? Separate out the fibers from the starch? Compare this to a moose, or hare. who does it for you! I have yet to find a wild edible that really compares to a big game animal for return on investment, cost in vs. cost out. This is a real life experiment...right.

    Great video. I thought your idea of keeping the catfish on the string in the water was a smart idea because you're keeping it alive until you are ready to harvest its flesh. Keeping the fish alive means you'll have fresh meat over having to store the dead fish and worry that it'll go off especially if you don't have a esky filled with ice or a portable fridge / freezer available to you. I like the idea of eating the marrow because it has healthy fats, a lot of protein and calories which is what you need especially if in the wilderness as you guys are.
    Keep up the good work and keep on making more videos for us to watch.

    Man, bone marrow is such a cool food, I’ve had the opportunity of tasting one and it has both the consistency and taste of tasteless jelly, its so odd but so good.

    I think the key to this challenge is trying to do as little as possible. If you can be comfortable and not using the calories you'll keep the weight.
    That's probably not an easy thing to do though unless you really know the area.

      Exactly right! Have to be really careful about where and what you do.
