Pretty nice purchase for a whopping fifty bucks. You can get the smoky smell out of these albums if you put them into an empty washing powder box and turn the pages from time to time. Or just keep them on your porch and turn one page every day. Keep it up, and see you on the next one ! Greets from GER, U.
Try putting the albums in a sealed plastic container with a large container of Ozium for addressing mildew.
For the mildew use original regular Lysol Disinfectant Spray and spread each sheet out in sunlight to dry, long process but should work 👍👍👍

The "hateful" Harris Crystal mounts. Supposedly the acetate shrinks over time and hurts the stamps
The duck stamp is a good find
Your excitement is contagious and I'm following your quest with great interest. I can't seem to get as excited as you do about the back of the stamp, but that's part of the fun - all collectors are different and that is A-OK. ( VF with a light hinge mark is no big deal for me)
When I’ve had noxious refrigerator smells, putting some wadded up newspaper in refrigerator has often removed the odor. Could take apart these albums and put pages in clean box with wadded up newspaper … worth a try and cheaper than buying Lysol . Nice lot.

Better luck next time! Our local stamp shop will often have a bankers box full of albums like this for $20; a great way to build a nice beginning collection, especially if you can find nice album pages.

So people offer complete year sets on Ebay, MNH, for very reasonable prices. One seller is offering 1950-1959 complete for $56.
Very true... you can also get the USPS yearbooks with the Mint stamps in them for decent prices, if you look around enough

At PIPEX a dealer had some MNH ducks for face, I was fired up.
if you think about it if i had these albums 1/take out all the MNH and put them in your collection 2/ use the albums for USED stamps with mounts.
That's the plan! If I can get the smell out...

Sort of... trying to build the complete USA set in each Davo album. They're real $$ though so I'm doing then in chunks at a time... about as much as Mrs Silk will allow... :)
Another great video! I’ve had a few items with that smell. I find air and light the best remedy. I just leave it open, turn the pages periodically, and in most cases, it gets to an acceptable level. What are you wanting to do with the albums?

Leave the books open outside on a sunny, dry day.
If you get a musty album should you remove the stamps right away? I received two albums recently that do smell.
Yes! Typically when you remove them you won't notice much damage at all... and if there used, you can soak them clean if you want to

When you say, smells musty, is it from cigarettes, or from mildew. I hate collections reeking of cigarettes, or cigars, or pipe tobacco..just my views....I almost throw out the vast majority of collections reeking of that stuff......
Totally agree... and these are smoke, unfortunately. I thought I'd be able to repurpose them but alas... one of the risks of Ebay. Still pleased with the stamps though at least!
