River Rope Hazard!!

Steven's Down on the Poudre is a Colorado Gem, providing class IV rapids. On this rapid, Tunnel Rapid, can be very tricky with lots of hidden FU rocks, pitons, and holes...level dependent. It's also the one rapid that gives me the most fits. What you see on this video is a wider view of what I saw, being more focused what's in front of me.
As we, a crew of 9, made our way through this section, I was watching Seth's line with teh intent to go river right. When I picked my line, there was this pinned "boater" in front of me, thinking it was a kayaker, I was considering a glancing blow to shake it loose...then I saw the line strung across the river, bailed, ducked and got through ok.
A couple of things I generally do: scan the river for hazards, and plan my lines. I think I was fixated on the boat since I was soo close that I didn't see the line. But, a bigger problem here is there were 3 stranded rafters: one on the rock, and two on shore holding the line. There was nobody upstream warning incoming boaters of the line hazard. I could not see or hear any warnings from across river at the time, too.

That could have ended up badly. Glad it's not At least they lifted the rope up for you( try not to kill you). I faced almost the same situation last weekend. I understand the situation requires fast decision but some people really need to learn basic practices

The rope was tied to teh raft, so the lift was minimal, but just enough. Yeah, these things can go badly. The rafter on teh rock reached out to me a few days later and explained what happened. All was good, and hoped everyone learned from this, including a new whistle for one of my crew members.
